One of the great military reversals of history, attested to in Herodotus and the Bible, and implied in Assyrian records, involves the defeat of the vast army of Sennacherib as he attempted to assert control over Egypt and Judah. King Hezekiah was delivered, not by military prowess, but by faith in the God of Israel. For more free resources, please visit www.brucegore.com.

Sennacherib doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that could be bought off. He marched on Jerusalem to conquer it, and without a doubt wanted to capture Hezekiah. All arrows point to the Bible as the accurate depiction of what happened. God intervened and saved Jerusalem!

Excellent lecture! You were able to bring to life this important account in biblical history and show how it applies to us. It is important to emphasize exactly who is the Lord God Almighty, the Holy One of Israel. In the account about Sennacherib and Hezekiah in 2 Kings, 2 Chronicles and Isaiah, the Hebrew text repeatedly uses the divine name YHWH, which is translated to English as Yahweh or Jehovah. By destroying Sennacherib's army, YHWH proved himself superior to all other gods.

I do believe they were all correct. Those field mice could have had a virulent form of plague. Killing all the warriors by morning as they ate all the leather and crawled across the faces of the warriors. The army that Shabiktou faced may have looked even more pitiful than his own. I've listened to #14 at least 20 times. Named the new cat" Shabiktou ".

Enjoyed your discourse Bruce, I like the way you allow each individual to make their own decision. Your modulation is excellent. You do know that God's name is not 'The Lord God Almighty?' His name is JEHOVAH, I found that name in the King James bible of my grandmother's (I was not religious at that time). You might also care to watch Shabbat Night Live with Michael Rood and Nehemia Gordon regarding the pronunciation of the most glorious name of our God, JEHOVAH, it's amazing, but love the way you delivered the lesson, perfect. Not sure about the mice from Herodotus, his account of Babylon's fall is much more accurate and consistent with the biblical narrative. Thanks for your efforts Bruce, much appreciated.

Hello Bruce! Thank you for this lesson. I really appreciate all of your hard work. While reading in 2 Kings about these events, I became confused. I have a difficult time putting Biblical events in chronological order, especially when they are presented in the wrong order! It took me a while to figure out that Hezekiah's illness happened before Sennacherib's defeat by the Lord. 2 Kings 18 talks about Sennacherib and then 2 Kings 19 talks about his illness so I assumed they happened in that order. However, I sat and read it until I figured it out, or more correctly, the Holy Spirit showed me my errors! I now have a question regarding the quote from Herodotus. Why does it refer to Sennacherib's defeat being against the Egyptians? Is that where it happened? Can you explain this for me?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 8 жыл бұрын
The biblical account mentions that Sennacherib was attacking both Judah and Egypt. His army was actually postured south of Judah and north of Egypt. Herodotus got his information from Egyptian priests about 300 years after the fact, and the information he received was clearly from the Egyptian perspective. Thanks again for your encouragement!

I have a serious problem with the year 705 in which they claimed Sennacherib came to Jerusalem because, if 722 was the year Sargon II took Samaria and this year was the 6th year of Hezekiah (2Kings 18:10), then in the 14th year of Hezekiah, a mere 8 years later, Sennacherib went up to Judah v.13. The year should be 715, how is it that they say it was 705?
@GoreBruce
@GoreBruce 7 жыл бұрын
This discrepancy has long been recognized and there have been various attempts to reconcile the data. The final defeat of Sennacherib must certainly have taken place in 701, based on multiple sources. The date references in 2 Kings 8 may reflect a period in which Hezekiah co-reigned with his father (a common practice and most probably the explanation) or it may reflect a miscalculation of the date of the death of Ahaz, which introduces its own problems. The matter is treated by John Rogerson (Chronicle of the Old Testament Kings, Thames and Hudson) and in the sources cited therein. Thanks for your interest!

@sagesarabia5053
@sagesarabia5053 4 жыл бұрын
Annmarie Campbell Yes. It’s clear from the writings on Sennacherib’s Prism that the Assyrians were in full control and got exactly what they wanted and more. Here is the ancient text from the prism transcribed into English ....... “Moreover, as for Hezekiah of the landJudah, who had not submitted to my yoke, I surrounded and conquered forty-six of his fortified cities, fortresses, and a large number of smaller settlements in the surrounding areas, by having ramps built and battering rams used to decimate the cities with the assault of foot soldiers, sapping, breaching, and masterful use of siege engines. I brought out of them 200,150 people, young and old and female, horses, mules, donkeys, camels oxen, and sheep and goats, which were without number, and I counted them as booty. As for him (Hezekiah), I confined him inside the city Jerusalem, his royal city, like a bird in a cage. I set up blockades against him and made him dread exiting his city gate. I detached from his land and took his cities that I plundered and I gave these cities to Mitinti, the king of the city Ashdod, Padi, the king of the city Ekron, and Ṣilli-Bēl, the king of the city Gaza, and thereby made Hezekiah’s land and Kingdom smaller. With regards to Hezekiah’s annual tribute and what he typically paid, I added the payment of gifts In recognition of my overlordship and imposed it upon them. As for him, Hezekiah, fear of my lordly brilliance overwhelmed him and after my departure, he delivered to me his auxiliary forces and his elite troops whom he had brought inside to strengthen the city Jerusalem, his royal city, thereby gaining reinforcements, along with 30 talents of gold, 800 talents of silver, precious metals, large blocks of ivory beds, armchairs of ivory, elephant hides(s), elephant ivory, ebony, boxwood, every kind of valuable treasure, as well as his daughters, his palace women, male singers and female singers brought into Nineveh, my capital city, and he sent a mounted messenger of his to me to deliver this payment and to do obeisance and bowed to me with respect”

Assyrian records show that the kings of Jerusalem that came after Hezekiah continued to pay tribute and this would not of happened if the Assyrian army was destroyed by an angel. The king of Assyria also continued to rule for many years after which also would not of happen for Assyria had many enemies that would have overthrown Assyria. These verses in the Bible are clearly propaganda.
@GoreBruce

Yes, tribute was reinstated under the son of Hezekiah, Manasseh, who later rebelled against Ashurbanipal, and was taken to Babylon for a time as a punishment, but later reinstated to the Jewish throne. Sennacherib was killed by his two sons about fifteen years after the incident involving Hezekiah. He never returned to Jerusalem, and Hezekiah did not pay tribute during the remained of his reign, which was for another 15 years or so. All of this is covered in my book on the Historical Context of the Bible.

@@sagesarabia5053 God calls Assyria _His handiwork_ (in the same breath calling Egyptians His people) and they definitely looked pretty sparkling good in the Prophets for being a nation quick and willing to repent when Jonas the prophet showed up. In the New Testament the first churches were largely throughout the Turkey/Syria region of Rome. God made strong nations (including Assyria, Egypt, Persia, Greece, and Rome) to the eventual good of all, meaning often to keep your Semitic cousins, the Jews, in line. It worked.
