#14 Hydrocolloid Blister Plasters (Like Compeed) - Which Blisters Do They Suit?

Compeed is an example of a hydrocolloid blister plaster. They suit a specific type of blister only - DEROOFED blisters
Hey it's Rebecca here with this weeks' 60 second blister tip. And today it's about Compeed and other Hydrocolloid dressings.
Here's some Compeed. These are great little things. You've got ones that are kind of big for like the back of your heel, or under the ball of your foot.
And then little tiny baby ones for like toe blisters. Now, this type of dressing is great for some blisters, but really bad for other blisters.
And I just want you to know one thing. Only ever use a Hydrocolloid dressing on a de-roofed blister. Don't put it directly onto a blister that's got its roof intact, or where the roof is slightly torn only.
Because these are very sticky, and what will happen is when you go to peel this off, it will rip your blister roof right off with it. And you'll be left with a worse blister than when you started with.

I was given these without any advice... Of course, I used it wrong : / I used an 11P Swann-Morton scalpel to drain (but not deroof) the blister, cleaned and degreased it with an alcohol antibacterial and then when it was dry I applied the compeed. The cushioning was amazing and pretty much alleviated all the pain for the next 9 miles. So much so that I considered putting one on the other foot as a a preventative. So, short term - fantastic : ) Two days later I tried to take the patch off and the blister head was entirely fused into the patch. This left a big red freshly de-roofed wound which I immediately attached a new compeed to. Nevertheless I did 27 miles the next day without any pain or issues. So, these ARE miraculous little things. but they come with some gotchas... 1. They cheerfully will tear the roof off any blister as they'll happily fuse any skin that isn't exuding. Use only on weepy de-roofed blisters. 2. They need to make a strong attachment so get the surrounding skin completely dry and degreased. I've since seen these roll off into a runners sock and they can't be removed once they bind with the fibres. 3. I've been told that a hot bath will make it turn to the stickiest gunk you've ever seen and the clean-up is awful. I'd say use them without hesitation on an open weeping sore. If the surrounding skin is dry and grease-free when applied that thing ain't coming loose for a week. The padding and chafe protection it offers is truly amazing : ) It promotes new skin growth really well, but it eats dead or detached skin for breakfast. I just wish I could find something this effective for roofed blisters. Never tried the toe ones, but the pad is soft, stretchy and gel-like - so I can't imagine them being too much of a problem on areas that bend - and their bind strength is amazing :D

Can i use it on a old blister that has turned hard due to shoe friction on the foot heel??

Nope. Just use a bandaid if your dry blistered skin just needs a bit of protection.
