That was really interesting. In Germany we do have the two boxing idioms but I wasn't aware that they come from boxing. Funny that I have to watch an English video to learn something about my own language ... 😅

I didn't know the 1st idiom but I came across one that's really similar: "Knock it out of the park". For example : "Mary was really worried about her presentation but in the end she knocked it out of the park".

Are they all different or some of them are quite similar? I get confused when to use which sometimes, It will help me lots if you can explain the differences, some examples would be even better!

Really good question Katrina. There can definitely be overlaps so you might describe ‘hit it out of the park’ as a phrase or as an idiom. Slang is different because it is a very informal word or phrase that is particular to a certain dialect. Clearly I should do a special video on this topic!

Yes. "Home stretch" is used in American English. I have never heard an American say "home straight."

"She stepped up to the plate and hit it out of the park" does not even mix metaphors. It could easily come from a radio broadcast of a baseball game. On the other hand, no one would say, "She stepped up to the plate but just came from left field."

Hi Tom, does this idiom related to motorcycling exist in the English language? "Se sei incerto, tieni aperto" ("When in doubt, gas it out") which means: when we are faced with a choice, the best thing to do is to decide quickly; don't let fear or insecurity stop you from trying new things, believe in yourself, do what you love and believe is right. Great question Alice, I don’t believe their is a direct translation. We do have motorcycle/car idioms like ‘put the brakes on (something)’ but nothing that has the same meaning that I can think of. Let me have a think 🤔

@@EatSleepDreamEnglish Yes you're right, the literal translation should be (more or less): if you are unsure, keep it (the throttle) open i.e. technically don't slow down (in curves) otherwise you risk falling. Have a nice weekend 🌞

Yes 👍 ‘ the home stretch’ can be used too. Both expressions come from horse racing not athletics. I use football topics to teach English on my channel and I have a similar video to this. (Horse racing idioms in football) Like football? Please take a look. ✌️⚽️
