Are you a sports fan when watching the Olympics or the World Cup Final?
When Olympic fever hits, the World Cup Final approaches, or the Super Bowl comes on, you’ll probably notice that even those who are unenthusiastic about sports are ready to jump on the bandwagon, cheering for their favorite team or athlete.
If you’re speaking to someone who’s familiar with sports or watching the event on TV, there are probably some English phrases that aren’t clear.
Whether you’re shouting as your team wins the gold medal in figure skating or expressing disappointment at a missed goal, English conversations on sports are full of idioms.
In this Confident English lesson, you’ll learn 19 sports-related English idioms, phrasal verbs, and more so you can confidently express your thoughts when watching the Olympic games or a final championship.
I’ve divided the 19-sports related phrases into 5 different scenarios or phases of a sporting event:
- When your team is winning and you’re cheering
- When there’s a turn in events
- When your team is losing and you’re feeling disappointed
- When it’s a nail-biter
- When you’re describing the team or a specific athlete

Hello Annemarie! The expression I like the most is "to land". And I can use it in other situations besides sports. "I worked hard to obtain my financial independence. After a lot of setbacks, I finally landed it seven years ago" Like you, I'm not very into sports, neither practicing nor watching. I go to gym to work out, but it's not a sport. Of course I wish my country (Brazil) bring home the sixth World Cup, but I'm not willing to watch any match in the end of the year. Thank you for the lesson!

I'm glad you enjoyed the lesson, Thiago, and you found perfect non-sports related way to use "to land something." Great example.

Hello there Annemarie. The expression that I like the most was "underdog" because I have seen many cases when certain players were underestimated at the beginning and turning out the odds into winning the championship at the end. Thank you again for another terrific lesson. Blessings.

Yes, that's true! Thank you for adding it. It's a good adjective to use when someone (or when a team) consistently experienced bad luck or difficulties.

My favorite phrase from today's list is "to throw a curveball" because I see the dramatic situation for my team of game and suddenly one player (invisible from the beginning) changes the course of the game by unexpected moving the ball to the right partner and turns the game in the opposite position. I love a game of soccer since my youth and those moments make me full of delight.

That is definitely a wonderful expression and, as you said, indicates a dramatic situation! I'm glad you enjoyed this lesson, Lyudmila!

Hi Annemarie, Really useful phrases. Thanks a bunch. Sorry for asking you,but I urgently need an explanation. would you mind answering my question, please? Why can't we use 'used to" in the sentence "I lived in France for three years"? Is it because of 'for" or three years is too little for this structure?
@Speakconfidentenglish
@Speakconfidentenglish 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question, Yulia. There is a fine or subtle distinction between the past simple (I lived...) and used to (I used to live...). When we used 'used to' it refers to a state or habit in the past. Because a state or habit doesn't work with a specific time reference, we would not include "for 3 years." Rather, you might say, "I used to live in France but then I moved to..." I hope this helps.
