Extremely attractive, but those 70s fashions and hair styles weren't kind to her. Made her look older. I did think she was a real beauty in DVD and the early MTM shows.
@aslkhjbasijt7853 жыл бұрын
@@bobanderson6656 Probably every generation you can see the fashion and hair changes from the one before that affects our opinions about who is beautiful or not. Go back to the 19th century and the famous great beauties do not look so beautiful to us. However, going back way before Mary Tyler Moore in the 70s, Grace Kelly in the fifties and I would say even back to Jean Harlow, the idea of beauty is pretty much the same, with little change.

First of all, my favorite tv episode of all time was the Walnuts episode on Dick Van Dyke. Hilarious, and classic. 2nd favorite had Mary singing, "I don't care" in Western play. My 3rd favorite thing was the original Theme Song, "You might Just Make it After All", a little Bittersweet, but hopeful when I was a kid. It ended with Mary throwing her Beret up in the air, to signify Hope. Great Metaphor. Love that show. Well written, and inspiring. Thank you, Mary.

Two movies probably no one besides me has seen (both 1968): "Don't Just Stand There" with Robert Wagner and Harvey Korman; and "What's So Bad about Feeling Good?" with George Peppard, Dom DeLuise, and Thelma Ritter in her last film role. I wasn't watching much television in the 1960's, so I think that was the first time I saw her. There was also "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (1967) with Julie Andrews and Carol Channing; and of course, "Change of Habit" (1969) where she played a nun who has to choose between her vocation and idealistic ghetto doctor Elvis Presley (!) in his last--um--"dramatic" role. Edward Asner, the future Lou Grant, played a cop in that one.

I would argue that she did a lot for how all of us changed in our attitudes toward women. In the Dick Van Dyck show she insisted that her character should dress as real housewives did, in pants not just dresses as other 60’s TV wives had to. I recall in our rural school in the 60’s girls were only allowed to wear pants on the way to school, then change to skirts until nearly the 70’s. Seeing a woman on a popular TV show breaking the mould helped change that. In the Mary Tyler Moore show she played a single woman successfully working in a role that was not just secretarial, showing us that women in the workplace could make a difference. She did this while personally being a Republican with libertarian views who was not an activist for a cause outside diabetis. She changed the way I thought about women without me really realizing it, and I admire her for that.

Have somebody at the exec office watch the clown death episode and rerecord the commentary on her "not laughing". Her laughing was scripted, intentional and aired.
@GEKENILWORTH4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's correct, yabba. Those scenes of her cracking up at the funeral were in the script. For those who haven't seen the show, the premise is that Mary scolds the newsroom folks when they make jokes all week about Chuckle the Clown's sudden death. But at his funeral, the cast is solemn and it's Mary who bursts into laughter during the eulogy.
@DanielBarberMusic4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was the whole point of the episode, that's why it worked. Weird that this guy would have that interpretation of it.
@ddichny3 жыл бұрын
I believe he means that she had trouble keeping a straight face in the earlier scenes, where Mary was supposed to be so serious, and shocked by everyone else cracking jokes. It is confusing that he described that while showing the clips of the funeral scenes (in which her character finally gets the humor of the situation and inappropriately cracks up laughing); I think he just used those clips because it shows MTM struggling to not laugh (since there are no blooper clips of her cracking up while filming the earlier "serious" scenes).
