About a 6 most months..end of months less ..we have just experienced a difficult time, home alone without transport with 3 grandchildren for 2 weeks as daughter had a complex birthing experience, both she and baby were very unwell..the fear and stress and almost helplessness was real. Thankfully both are recovering and hope they'll be home next week. Meantime we have done really well..still plenty in freezer and in cans, only time I needed to ask for help was for 1 animal feed run. I do need to stock up more on batteries/candles as we are now into storm season so our solar is not kicking it ( we do have mains power for freezers but try not to use the supply as its not very reliable here, the system needs serious upgrades throughout the country!

I would say a 1 That’s how I feel. But it’s not knowing where to start, and so I’m learning from you. Have been stocking up on food, so I do have a freezer full and a few shelves of tinned/ caned food. But my issue is if there was ever a power issue I’d be stranded. Being an autistic disabled lady I am not allowed to cook myself really so asking to cook over a fire will never happen until I have no choice but too. I do have things like a 1st aid kid and lots of back up with my pain medication. As I always make sure I have extras just incase. You never know what may happen with supply chains. And don’t wanna be without- so until they run outta date- about 4 years worth… not completely but have 4years in future date… so up till 27/28 is on the drugs. And I try to use the older ones 1st so I’m stock rolling. I maybe have 6ths worth now I’m really thinking about it- in 2tablets. But the ones I take every day are 1a day they only give 1 a day so 30 for a month so there isn’t spare to keep. But if anything happens then we cross that road then. Either they get the meds to me or I don’t have em. Water I have water butts outside but no drinking water- probably should get a few crates and store them- but it’s places to store em. Being in a 1 bed bungalow, there isn’t much storage or space, it’s hard enough with daily living let along stocking up. I do have a small shed that has my wheelchair in- could stood bottled water there- don’t know about food. And yes it may be an idea to have an extra bag of dog food but again it’s storing it. Ahhhh

Florida here. You are so correct. Think of every scenario! Ask yourself “what if” what will I do. I’ve been without power for 13 days, that’s minor. I heard everyone impatient and complained, why?, because they weren’t prepped, simple. GA, NC, TN (everyone Helene) got their 4$$es handed to them unfairly 😢😢. People disrespect the power of water. Please get LIFE VESTS and don’t go near culverts or flooding waters. I’ve seen children/adults standing near rivers that have risen from Helene. One slip and they will be gone! Someone up there should start a coat/blanket drive, it’s about to get COLD! 😊 thank you! I hope everyone will listen and take action for their areas and needs. In Florida we worry about hurricanes, flooding, tornadoes mostly. But someone in California might worry about fires and earthquakes more than we would, so plan accordingly. Stop buying beer, liquor, cigarettes, diapers (go cloth), cancel subscriptions, stop dining out, cut up credit cards and stop frivolous spending and use savings to buy NEEDS. Don’t forget oxygen tanks for those in need.

Hear in East TN after everything we’ve been through because of that hurricane Helena I don’t know how you can ever be completely prepared the small things that’s what matters fresh water medicine food do you have any medical issues make sure you have what you need . I have heart trouble and realized the electric went off I had a hard time breathing with no air circulating so I think it is a must that I get a solar fan . Do a true 72 hour no electric or water to learn more of how to cope with everything you need to survive and just make things easier in case of an emergency. I think this should be part of prepping. Is doing drills you be surprised what you really need!

No matter where you live, have a head lamp for each person in your household who is old enough to safely use one. Store a lot of clean drinking water in a dark location that does not get freezing temperatures (use empty one liter beverage bottles and tap water if you are on a tight budget). Store some high calorie dry food you have packaged in Mylar + oxygen absorbers for long-term storage (rolled oats, dry plain spaghetti or macaroni pasta, plain white rice or instant rice, dried lentils, powdered nonfat milk). Have TWO battery powered emergency radios. Have a way to recharge your electronic devices: a portable solar panel + a solar power bank. Have at least one or two single burner butane stoves (safe to use indoors on your kitchen countertop) and extra butane cylinders. Have a rocket stove for outdoor cooking (can use dry twigs and strips of cardboard for fuel).

I was surprised to see the number of people (on youtube over the last week) that did not know how a generator works. Basic medical care is good to take time to learn. It took me about 5 years of working through different adult and kids illnesses to unlearn all the error that the medical profession has taught people. (Everytime someone got sick I called an older herbalist friend to have her talk me through what to do.) My oldest hasnt been to a doctor in 17 years and my two younger kids have never been unless they had a broken bone or I requested blood work. We have been able to handle everything at home. The first thing I had to really focus to unlearn was that fevers are your friend (unless you have heat stroke or meningitis).

Been through hurricanes, nor easters, white lighting, bomb cyclones and the huge drops of snow/ice/black ice in the 70's (walk out and sink into 5 feet). Where we are now electricity is a major concern, PGE raised prices three times within 4 months. and nothing has been transitory. Right behind electric now is gas of course timed as people fire up heating systems. Always have been preparing, first thing I made was an EQ kit and went from there. It's important to get down to basics, cash coin water food fuel warmth.. but have to remember others will be doing the same thing. I've seen several men with cash during snowstorm fight over the last of whatever in the store and several inclining price tags, one stuck on, over the other leading to a ring of shrimp for $50, yes NJ was huge on gauging. So, take your cash to a flea market, local farm vs popular supermarket. Everyone walks to the gas station with their containers and stands in line to refill the generator for hours. Why not invest in a solar generator to float through the first 72 hours. After storm the open drive thru's fill up. People get in their car, spend the fuel to sit and wait for processed hot food. Why not walk or bike or have enough on hand to get through a week or two. Bottled water of any kind will sell out or be wiped off shelves. Store water or if unable get a Silcock key and go find your own fresh water. Point is you will not be the only one who has prepped, many are doing this now but have never been through an actual emergency scenario.. key to zig zag go around what is popular and get more of what you need before its found out.

I don't think that you will get many 10's or even 9's in these comments 🙂 Here in the UK, we don't have none of the major natural hazards that you guys face, so we have no real realization of the true nature of them. So we as a country are well behind the curve when it comes to prepping. Our preps are really just water, food, power and basic first aid - that will cover most of our needs (supply issues and power outs) I would also suggest doing a basic first aid course, so that you can use that first aid kit and try to build up a stock of any prescription meds that you or your family needs. I'm around the 7, my main downfall is water, as I live in a small flat (apartment in your language) and just lack the space, I have enough for about 30 days 😞

I do not know how our old house did. I think it was probably far enough and high enough from the water to not flood though. Not sure about what damage the wind did 😬

I hope soon! The process has been much slower than I expected 😆 This town we are in takes its time with everything and I am not pushy enough to rush them 🙃

We've been living in Florida since 1996, so I think I know what I'm saying.... YOU ARE RIGHT it is getting worst. Every 4 or 5 years we have the effect of la nina et el nino meeting in the Pacific. So, it is not unusual for those years to have more hurricanes however they are way more powerful than they were a few years back. You must be glad you are not living here any longer.

Yes, I am VERY glad I do not have a house in FL anymore. I am stressed enough with just my parents being down there 🙃

All that sounds great, but did you take into account the Senior Citizens? Perfect example in Fort Pierce Florida the mobile home retirement park for seniors they lost everything and don't have money to rebuild or insurance to cover them to even get a new mobile home, in a perfect world what you're saying would make sense but unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world do we! Also, I don't mean to rant, but the government should supply those seniors with new mobile homes no charge if we can give $160 billion dollars to Ukraine, we should be able to help our own people here in the U.S. but again it's not a perfect world!

I did think of seniors. That is why I made a point that all able-bodied people prepare so that emergency resources can go towards those who are in more need - the old, children, those with medical conditions. If my needs are met because I have prepared, then I am not only not competing for community resources, but I am better able to help others in need.

I agree because seniors struggle with so much, body, mind, soul and financial, it's just so much harder. We do have to remember though we are supposed to be the government as it's we the people, we need organize and be squeaky wheels. Even just starting small and local, if we all do that and prep for ourselves and our neighbors then it all works better. Pass it on we need others to realize one day we will all be sick, disabled and or seniors 👍🙏

Your point is so correct. Here in Germany the same happens. So much money goes to Ukraine, Israel, Afrika and migrants who are able to work but don't want to. I know of a lot of elderly and disabled people who do not get one cent from the government. If your are from the Ukraine, you can drive the biggest SUV and still get government assistent.

I absolutely agree with being prepared. But natural disasters are not getting worse or becoming more frequent. Don't believe the propaganda lies. Natural disasters have always happened, and they always will. We should always be prepared.
