I think there are different types of them and hobbies evaluate till age f.ex. in age 6 till 13 my hobbies was reading, puzzles, games, and drawing things, n doing crafts, from 15 till 18 it was writting poetry, going on a history lessons, sculpting lessons and theatre lessons. After I started study, but I quit them.After I worked in many different places, now I like listen to music, watch movies and learning languages, sometimes I do bracelet or earrings. 🤣 It is very hard sometimes to be intp.creetings. 🫂

I've just signed up for an archery beginner course that runs over 4 fridays in October. Maybe I'll actually be interested in competing in a "sport". What appeals to me the most about archery is the precision required to control the physical body and the trust relationship between mind and body. I think this will be a massive benefit for my INTP self. Climbing mountains/hiking, motorcycling, and obviously PC games are my go to hobbies.

I enjoy any type of precision sport- long guns, handguns, archery , darts. I get to analyze and project more ways to increase my precision. Then I can break down and clean my equipment. I love trying a variety of different types of actions and studying how they work and delve into the history of their design and historical usage in the past I can plink with a ww2 mosin nagant rifle, break it down and clean it, watch KZbin videos about variants and movies with them in it and then play a video game using one and later have an in depth conversation with someone about the platform lol

Most of these describe me. I would take issue with chess, though. It's taken for granted that because they are logical, INTPs would excel at chess. And if a game could last a few years, then maybe so. Because of Si, the INTP mind works linearly like a flow chart. To explore every possible response to every possible move, and extend that several steps into the future I think would be very difficult for an INTP. Other types can analyze all of these branches more quickly--or memorize strategies. Along those same lines (Si) I could not understand why I had so much difficulty with sight reading music. In early piano, I was able to learn a piece and memorize it. That was easier--it flows linearly, so you are continuously cued as to what comes next. Sight reading involves absorbing multiple bits of info and instantly translating that into motion with both hands. I simply cannot process information like that. So once the pieces got too complex, I got lazy, lost interest, and that was that. In retrospect, an instrument that plays a single melodic line would have been more achievable--and rewarding when combined with an group. And in fact, I did start early on French horn and excelled, but lacked confidence and was afraid to go to orchestra rehearsals (like at 7 years old I really had something to fear). I ended up in choirs all through school which accomplished the same thing. But I love classical music and really wish I had stuck with the horn.

There is plenty of INTP representation at the upper echelons of chess. INTJ's are obviously more represented at that tier of play but I think your issue conflates two things that probably shouldn't be conflated. INTPs may not be well suited to being the best at chess, but they are well suited to enjoying it anyway. It provides all of the things that INTPs generally find engrossing. At that point, whether an INTP gets good at it pretty much just depends on how much dedication they can bring themselves to apply and that's where a lot of that interest thins, since getting really good at chess is incredibly demanding and INTPs usually have too many hobbies to focus on one thing that much.

@@Ichthyodactyl Disagree. I don't think that INTPs would engage in or work at improving themselves in a game for which they have no natural inclination and have less potential of winning. Boredom will set in very quickly. Due to high Ne, INTPs will take forever to make a move. We cannot just "do it." I have come to the realization that due to a lack of understanding of the cognitive functions, most people self-identifying as INTPs are actually not. Most are actually INTJs.

@@MrTrashcan1 Disagree. INTPs regularly engage with activities that they know they are never going to master because mastering skills is not the defining motivation for pursuing their interests. INTPs seek novelty in their experiences, not perfection or competitiveness. The picture you paint of an INTP is one that cannot take any action at all because life is full of infinite possibilities and it is impossible to fully evaluate them all before doing something. Every INTP knows that in order for anything to get done, a compromise must be made, every INTP knows that, at a certain point, you have to just pull the trigger whether you want to or not. It's one of the first lessons that life teaches you; sometimes the best you can hope for is an educated guess. In fact, the "why would I do something I have no competitive chance at?" mindset is much more in-line with an INTJ's cognitive functions than an INTPs. On that point, if you have any actual data regarding the likelihood for self-identifying INTPs to actually be mistyped INTJs, I'd love to take a look at that because none of the many articles I've read on MBTI mistyping put that as a significant likelihood. In fact, most of the data I've looked at suggests that INTPs are way more likely to mistype themselves as an INTJ than the reverse.

And you're right, sooner or later they have to pull the trigger--and that is certainly the fact in life's circumstances--but why engage in a game like that? Once you've experienced it, it is no longer a novelty and you're on to other things. INTPs don't engage in any old thing just for the sake of novelty. As to data, this is what I have personally observed from interacting with so-called INTPs on forums like Quora, including reading their profiles which include questions and answers they have offered. I have little respect for the psychological community and their "studies." IMO their data is based on incorrect understandings of the cognitive functions and therefore everything downstream is meaningless.

I love playing chess but I never got past the mediocre level. Maybe because I don't like memorizing lines or openings, any activity that requires a lot of memory bores me. And I hate math Ironically, activities that focus exclusively on using introverted thinking bore me. Chess (high-level), hard sciences and mathematics interest me only for first principles which apply to a wide range of disciplines: psychology, economics, sociology, art, history, music, etc. I am an INTP who has learned to distrust introverted thinking (which is essentially reductive) and prefers the wild exploration of ideas generated by extraverted intuition (which is blissfully expansive).

Now, im curious to know, or if someone could answer me. Yes im basically relate with most of this stuff. but i still doubit myself as being an INTP. also my question is. its could be the Barnum/Forer effect. if not, explain me why its not work like the Barnum effect? thanks! cause i did bunch of tests, but online.. and my psycholog that didn't knew about those tests that i took. said that im "Gifted". and its not good or bad. its just as it is. some of the people are not tend to think a lot and use their brains. and some of the people are "fucked up" a bit. cause the mental instability and depression and even PTSD/CPTSD is combined later in life in my situation.. its kinda annoying a bit to be with personality like this.. sometimes i just want to low my brain a bit, learn to enjoy by watching shows on netflix or do what regular people tend to do. and addiction to weed is appear on the surface.. cause its the only way to relax you'r mind a bit sometimes.. to just learn to enjoy from life and not being with an Xray glasses by watching on people around. im literally not gonna marry or have a child ever in my life. like a regular peoples want.. i dont want a family! like a regular people want. i mean, the society is just torture people like us! this is why we feel like aliens most of the time. i want just to learn intresting stuff! and enjoy it! i even dont see a point in being rich anymore. at my 23 years old today. my amibtions are different! everyday routine is killing me.. :(

No, I don't like yoga or chess. Computers scare me because I just know how to type, that's all. I don't like the complexity of it. I like to work alone, I like reading about events and explorations. I find conspiracy theories and mysterious events interesting but I don't believe in any of them. I just like to find out what others think, what the researchers found and how far some people would go just to prove their point. And yes, I like to analyze why they believe in those things so I check their background because I think culture, religion, finacial status, educational background and environment all contribute to the way their thoughts process. In short, I like to think logically.

As an INTP, my principle hobby has always been learning. I want to know everything there is to know about about everything in the world. However, after delving deeply into a subject area I get to a point where I become bored with the subject and then move on to another subject. In my younger years I was more oriented towards the hard sciences, but now in my old age I find sociology absolutely fascinating. I'm not talking about the claptrap that constitutes the sociology curricula in our colleges, I mean examining why people are doing the things that they are doing and why certain attitudes and behaviors are emerging in society, especially the quasi-religions that have replaced traditional religion. For example: why the incredible reemergence of the popularity of socialism after its dreadful track record? I have no idea what will interest me next. I have no interest in electronics, and absolutely hate detail oriented hobbies like jig-saw puzzles and languages and any endeavor that requires significant memorization (I have a hideously weak memory). Chess quickly bored me because it involves formulaic openings; I enjoy more free form board games. I never turn down an invitation to a killer hearts card game. I love taking hikes. I also read a lot of novels in addition to the non-fiction that I prefer.

I've always wanted to play chess but in addition to being an intp I also have ADHD, so I just can't calm down and think about the game

That sounds challenging! As an INTP, your natural curiosity and love for strategy would make chess a great fit, but ADHD can definitely make it hard to focus. Maybe try starting with shorter games or using apps that have quick, timed matches.

You know what? This is my whole life 😂 I do it everyone, I say just photo, hiking, jigsaw puzzles are my hobbies. Just a little differences. I dont like playing chess and elevtonic games. Chess has tooo much probability. I cant calculate it and my mind turned to numb. E games is just waste of time. I can do better things 😅 And also, my next goal is being a polyglot 😂
