The conclusion points to the 16" being so much more capable, but I think the real conclusion is how capable the 14" is. Let's be real - an M1 air will be sufficient for most. The users that will see an increase in performance of the 16" over the 14" is so very small that the best advice is to put your hands on both and buy what form factor suits your needs - either will handle all you can throw at it. The weight, screen size, portability, and use case is going to outweigh the small performance difference.

Bigger screen more area to work, I don't have to minimize tool bars anymore and when I am not working movies look better on the bigger screen. @@johngwheeler I don’t know what kind of small spaces you are talking about that 2” more could be a deal factor. Also one pound heavier is it not day and night. I traveled a lot even to remote locations in South America and I have never being asked to weight back pack so I don’t know what budget airlines you are referring too that do such things even in a small aircraft. I have an Incase backpack which fits a laptop a body camera and 3 lenses which I consider small bag. I can fit it into any upper bin, even the small planes which only two rows of seats and it also fit under the seat if I need it. I just test it and the 16” fits with a little room to spare. Now I am using peak design backpack which also fits the 16” with not problems, I have other photography bag pack at home so I am going to try just for curiosity but other than my sling bag to go which only fits one lens, a body and a tablet I believe the 16” MacBook Pro should have not fitting issues. I won’t denied that the 14” MacBook is easier to carry than 16” and it is ground breaking that for first time ever that smaller MacBook can be spec out exactly as the bigger MacBook but saying that is such a deal breaker to turn down a larger display, better performance, better thermal, noise and battery life for only $200 more because it is 2” bigger and 1.3lbs heavier it makes little sense.

I can think of only one explanation: apple chooses comfort over full-tilt performance (they think machine running quieter and cooler more important than absolute max performance for 14").

Also at around 8:38, he says it’s running cooler on the 16 inch but it’s the 14 inch information he is showing. At 8:53 he shows the 14 inch information (/ 64.0 gb) again. There’s other times as well… PLEASE NOTE on this you tube timeline, these times tend to slightly bounce around inaccurately for some reason, but they should be good enough to get my point. My point is I (like many) wanted see a 14 inch MAX & 16 inch MAX 64 gb comparison. Instead (unless I’m wrong) I felt like he tried sucker me. He also towards the end makes it sound like the 16 inch is $200 more. It’s more like $200 + $400 ( 64 gb ram) more if solid state drive is the same price. It’s no hard feelings, just a video. I do like there other latest MBP videos they made… This video though is a little strange to watch MAX…

Excellent critique. Wish there was a one to one comparison as well. Although you have to keep in mind that he bought all these MacBooks himself and there are so many different combinations to buy. And besides who else is comparing all these specs at this level? All that being said I do agree with your comment. I can see it from both angles though.

I am super impressed with how well the 14" performed as well as that 16". I think I would choose the 16" for the slightly better thermal benefits. (And also for the larger mini LED screen for watching movies and editing videos) Awesome video, and thank you for the comparisons!!!

Is it normal when you open cinebench on the new 16 MBP (M1 Pro) and do an multi core test that you can hear some noise (BEFORE the fans kick on) inside the machine? It seems to be like a clicking noise - or idk what it is exactly - it’s also only there if I do put the machine under full load - it’s not loud at all you have to keep your ears close to the keyboard to hear it. Is that normal or should I be worried?

Awesome video! Definitely smart for apple to protect the machine with a little bit of throttling rather than trying to cram the same exact performance. I still think the 14 inch max would be worth it if I wanted the max chip. I think from your testing there isn’t enough real world performance hits to make it a deal breaker. I’m way more curious about the 24c option. Is that the best value in the max chip configuration!?! If you do get one of those machines please stack it up against the 14 and 16 32c gpu machines please 😁

Even if 14" suffers from thermal throttling or shorter battery life (compared to Air or 16"), I still love 14" due to its compact size and portability. Just adding, 16" can only be fast-charged via MagSafe, but 14" can be fast-charged via MagSafe with 96W, USB-C with 96W, and even Pro Display XDR with Thunderbolt cable connection.

I know you already did a M1 Air comparison with M1 Pro, did you compare it for HEVC encoding and smoothness of 10bit 4:2:2 4K60 editing to compare entry level M1 Air with the entry level M1 Pro with the Maxxed out M1 Max? My guess is by far you're all sorted and fine with a second hand $600 M1 Air, which is what I am sticking to. Unless there actually is a big difference for H264/H265 editing/rendering in 4K60 footage both 8bit (as footage from my current Panasonic G9 + DJI Pocket mark1) and 10bit 4:2:2 (from potentially my future GH6, if GH6 has PDAF and isn't too expensive)?

So. I've decided to go for the 14". There is a sale on the 14" m1 max 32 core 1tb 32gb, at the moment. The same speced 10core pro model costs additional $100-150. Should i pay extra for the "cheaper" pro model? Portability and battery life are more important than power in my case.
@cryptonite84953 жыл бұрын
Interesting that you had to ratchet up to extreme uses that few people would employ (8K ProRes RAW?) before there were significant performance penalties on the Max 14. And part of that, as you noted, was because Apple throttled the 14 for better battery life. Since I don't need these extreme scenarios, neither Max model is warranted for me. The 14 M1 Pro seems the best combination of price and performance, though I did spring $200 to get the 1TB storage. Your mileage may vary.

The frequency limitation is so interesting! I’m relieved it doesn’t make much difference in blender, so I can go for the more portable 14’. Thank you so much for doing all these different tests so we know which one is best for us! Also, since we know Apple is tuning frequencies, I think it could be possible they dial it up even more on the desktop iMacs with even more power and cooling. Even though M1Max is smashing most other laptops, I feel like they need to be more powerful to compare with other desktops.
