Actually it performs as well because Apple made a tradeoff between the health and longevity of the machine vs it's performance. That's what they always did in the past with Intel CPU's when needed to get good performance. I kind of despise that.

@@danielfrappier3378 could you elaborate a bit more? How did Apple make tradeoff between performance and longevity with the x86 architecture based cpus by Intel?
@danielfrappier33783 жыл бұрын
@@limlth On many models they kept the cpu at near 100 degrees for extended period of times because the thin chassis and weak cooling systems could not keep up. @@accordinglyryan I said good pc manufacturers. Dell although their laptops are beautiful is probably the worst of them all for reliability and durability. It is true that more and more of them are running hotter lately. Nice video guys, I can tell that a KZbin video is not here for clicks when it is more than 15 mins long :D it means it has content; and every one of your launch week videos has been between 25 to 30 mins. That said, from this video it looks like the 14" is good for when you need the huge compute power but in bursts and do not need all of it all the time, plus you are on the go a lot and the smallest amount of space saved makes a difference and want to carry your work with you a lot. This is because of the smaller battery, poorer thermals compared to 16" and also the smaller size. The 14" definitely not meant for gaming on the go (apart from the argument that macbooks are not for gaming, I feel the M1s are gonna change that). But for sustained performance at cooler temps and better battery overall, the 16" definitely makes a lot of sense. Has head room for pushing it and can keep going for long, not to mention better screen real estate but all at the cost of increased size and weight ... I'd probably go for the 16" for my use case, but for my wife the 14" is perfect.
@NeuwDk3 жыл бұрын
To me, it seems like the 16" will last longer as it seems to stay cooler during bursts of computing and hence thermally stressing components less. So I definitely would prefer it for that - but the portability of the 14" is so compelling. I'm still at a loss 😅 Great video regardless!

The pre-Touchbar, 2015 and before MBPs were excellent machines, but their unibody chassis did flex a bit, and was susceptible to slight permanent deformations over time. I suspect that on these M1 MBPs, the chassis hooks to which the back cover remains attached, even after removing the screws, must be significantly contributing to the additional rigidity and solidity of the case. These hooks were absent on the older MBPs and make back cover removal thus more difficult, but the benefit in terms of added system rigidity and improved protection against mechanical stresses of internal components like the motherboard and the cooling heat pipes are worth it, IMHO.

The 16” wins all as it have space to accommodate all required hardware in it you do not mind the size/price but as return wins overall,thats my final accessment!
@harrybarrow62222 жыл бұрын
Thanks for an excellent comparison and analysis. I had been leaning towards the 16”, simply because of the bigger screen and likely bigger battery. I had not thought about differences in the sound systems, and I had not expected the thermal differences to be so significant. To me, it seems clear that it is well worth paying the extra $200, if you can. My current MacBook Pro is 8 years old, so I need to replace it asap. I now know what to buy. 😀

Thanks for detailed comparison. While 14” sure packs a punch, definitely going for 16” having seen all these small QOL benefits here and there. Speakers, battery, more real estate screen, cooling system. Also with lockdown not really finished and going by car everywhere I don’t see how it’s less portable.

What about today’s scenario? Now for the time being the lockdown has been lifted almost all the countries out there.

The details you put into the comparison are good! Amazing that these macs really pack the performance. I wonder how the next MacBook Air would be 🤔
@GoldGiggler3 жыл бұрын
I don't think the next MacBook Air will focus on performance. Have you seen the rumoured redesign? It seems like an iPad Pro body with a screen attached! Super thin! Think Apple will make battery and portability (making it as light as possible) the focus of the new MacBook Airs, and performance should be on par or better than the M1.

For serious pro work, 16" is a no brainer. It goes through the tasks like a workhorse, 14" is kind of a gimmick compared to 16". It works ok until it get's warm then all system fails. As a professional photographer I have opportunity if not a requirement to have both. 14" is a basic (M1,16gb ram) model, 16" is maxed up (m1max,64gb ram,gpu32c)... I got 16" 3 months after 14", and for sure I did a real life comparison. As photographer I use medium format camera, as well as full frame, so all files are huge. I use Lightroom, Capture one and Photoshop software, many times interlinked... To be brief, all the tools that serious pro uses, and I do hdrs, panoramas etc.. So there's no room to hide for the hardware. So after 4 months onward, this are my findings: 14" (16gb ram, basic graphic, 1tb) ok for a very basic tasks, it's great actually if you keep it simple and not load up very demanding projects. If you keep the quantity low, few 10 files for edit, export, retouch, etc... it shines out any intel based laptops immediately. It doesn't lag, all is smooth and it is on pair with maxed out 16". I love the size, bam you throw it in the photobag and you're off. Love it! BUT: as soon as bigger project come, with hundreds, thousands of shots, among which there are panoramas, hdrs, 1:1 previews etc..lots of 100% views of 100mp files, things fall back immensely. I say immensely to be compared to Intel laptops, if not even worse. With heavy load, Lightroom starts to lag so much, that at times it is impossible to work, every click on a brush takes few seconds of a "wheel time", which makes you wanna throw the laptop at the wall :). Don't but it is hideous. Therefore, for a quick jobs in-out, great. For a serious workstation, nope nope and nope. Gimmick! 16" (64gb ram, 32c gpu, 2tb) throw at it whatever you want, it goes through like a knife thru butter. I think that's not just the maxed out spec, but just the size. Cramping all the spec into 14" has to come with some tradeoffs. I can't even imagine what would happen if I'd get maxed out 14". It would fry, I guess. LR export: 46 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 14" needed 31 seconds more 187 edited files at 100mp to resized JPG= 16" (7:22min) / 14" (15.24min) ...14" slowed down after 4 minutes drastically. Which might be due to the heat that kicked in and slowed down everything. ...now imagine you are working on something else while exporting on 14". Of course on other occasions I did, and it only slows down the export even more. Don't even think of using other heavy duty software when process power slows down, you are in for a chain reaction when all just becomes a dream where you try to run but you can't. So if you are in for a serious work, needing a workstation; 16" is the only way, don't be mislead by reviewers who in most cases are not professionals in video/photo world.

Hey Max, such a good comparison and it really amazing that the 16” has greater hardware which I think definitely worth for the extra $200 if don’t consider its weight and dimension! Actually Apple really put much effort in this generation for the MBP family no matter for the 14” or 16”!

The 14” MBP would definitely benefit from having a fan control app installed. It seems like Apple’s fan curve is designed for silence rather than thermals.
@juanmillaruelo76473 жыл бұрын
Just saw a tough stress test between identically specced machines 14/16: temps were matched, but the fans were near 5000 rpm in the 14 and nudging 3000 in the 16. The 14s control temps well, but fans have to work quite a lot harder. If temps are a concern go the 16 inch way. If portability is paramount go 14, aware that it will run hotter. The 16 is just a smidge more expensive (at identical configuration) justified by the screen, battery life and thermals.

I have been waiting for this MacBook for so long! I have been a big fan ever since the beginning. You guys cover up so many things that most other KZbinrs don’t. People must be thinking that microphone, camera, speaker quality etc. doesn’t really matter that much, but it’s these small things that can really help us make our decision because such things are sometimes important for us. Like I said, I have waited for this Mac notebook for so long time as all the new ones only had USB-C ports, and buying additional dongles can be a huge spend of money because AUX, HDMI and SD card slot really does matter to me. My dad has a 2015 MacBook Pro and professional softwares like capture one, Lightroom Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X, Resolve etc. run very slow processing extremely high quality RAW images and videos as he is a professional photographer and does cinematography, so the Mini LED is a huge plus. Even being able to download mobile applications on Mac OS is the best of both worlds. I would love to win this Mac notebook and know whoever does is going to love this beast of a machine.
