In Houston, Texas, a 14-year-old boy who was alone at home grabbed a gun when he spotted an alleged robber at his front door wearing gloves and a backpack around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday.
With his parents gone, the teenager retrieved a handgun and fired five or six shots at the man, ultimately causing his demise.
The authorities received three prior calls in the neighborhood about an individual attempting to gain entry into homes while soliciting money.
A witness, Araceli Herrera, observed the entire sequence of events, including the boy opening the door and firing the shots, leading to the alleged robber's collapse.
The 14-year-old's mother returned home shortly after the incident, and the boy handed her the handgun.
Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said, “We’re still trying to confirm if [the deceased man] had opened the door, or unlocked the door, or [was] just pulling back and forth on the doorknob.”

This is the exact reason I've taught both my boys starting at age five how to safely shoot firearms. Same ways my Grandfather and father taught me when I was young.
@jlbrpt
@jlbrpt 7 ай бұрын
I wish we had a lot more sensible, wise, caring parents like you in this world. My dad waited until I was about 8 to let me shoot, but he took me with him before that when he did his target practice. I'm forever grateful for his instruction. I was home alone as a teenager and a guy who'd been casing the neighborhood for 2 hours pulled into our driveway and raised the hood on his car like he was having car trouble. He came to the door, so I got dad's .308 rifle and chose a prone shooting position in the hallway. I wonder to this day if that guy had a guardian angel who told him to leave even though no one answered the door when he rang the doorbell...because he was 6 feet away from being 6 feet under. I had already made the "if entry is made, then fire all 5 rounds" decision and was perfectly calm. The adrenaline hit after he left.

@jlbrpt Sorry you had to go through that type of situation. I feel that teaching awareness along with accountability is key to being responsible.
@jlbrpt
@jlbrpt 7 ай бұрын
@@johnrexrode7746 it's all good...I am actually grateful for that experience. It made my a stronger person mentally. It showed me that in a real situation, I would remain calm and keep my wits about me to take decisive action, to defend myself and/or my loved ones. I don't think I would have struggled too much with the outcome either. I knew it was either him or me, and I chose not to be a victim. While I have compassion for other human beings, there would have been no guilt knowing that they forced my hand by the threat they posed and they alone are responsible for the outcome. Any other emotion would not be my burden to carry. I won't get emotional or sad about stopping a deadly threat. I've been in an actual shooting situation as an adult and I credit that first experience for preparing my mind and body to react appropriately and maintain a healthy, positive mental attitude.

I live in kc and a lot of people say things like why didn’t any conceal carry individuals intervene during the parade? Why did 2 unarmed individuals have to tackle one of the gunmen? People who are anti guns don’t actually know the gun laws. They don’t go through the same legal course that conceal carry permit holders do. I would like to see a breakdown of the federal gun laws for the ignorant who constantly scream for more laws when they don’t even know what’s already on the books. Statistically there were multiple people who were armed in kc who could have stopped the shooting but didn’t BECAUSE of the gun laws in place. Hypothetically had they intervened to save everyone they would have been thrown in prison.

I can relate to this. I was on the family ranch 20 minutes from the Mexican border. My brother and I were in the little house at night. My grandmother and uncle were in the main house about a quarter of a mile away. I looked out the bedroom window and saw an illegal looking in at me. The window was open and he was right there so I grabbed the 12 gauge and leveled it on him. I didn't have to fire, he just disappeared. I was 9. I called my brother, uncle and border Patrol. My uncle came down, tracked him thru the brush and border Patrol took him away. It was 1969. These days it may as well be 1869 except so few people know how to handle a gun.

My father is an army veteran and a lifetime member of the NRA. He never taught me about guns or gun safety. When I asked him why he didn't, his answer seemed unsatisfactory. I really wish he had taught me about guns. I know about them, I respect them, I want our 2A rights honored by the government, but I've had very little experience handling them because my career is in an industry that has been strongly opposed to guns, and I haven't been able to afford much beyond initial gun safety courses, let alone a gun that is appropriate for me to use.

Thanks to my dad teaching me about the destructive power of a gun, I knew to treat guns with the respect they need.
