So on the tiny caps around the HDMI encoder I've been watching you but when I try to solder one on the hot air blows it away every time lol. I guess I need a lot of practice but can I ask what temperature your air is set and what temp you have the soldering iron set at? Also what soldering tip you using, mine is small but you have one that has a tiny tip looks like it fits the smaller parts better. I really like your videos you are the best.

That is a real shame, i guess it was dropped at some point, that seems to happen a lot with dropped ps5's
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
I wonder if it was a drop or if it just cracks from the heat from the internal failure. Why is it always in the corner?
@CarlosGarcia-d3e9 ай бұрын
@@ToltecMercAn advance apology for my intrusion here: Why always in the corner? You are right; perhaps the perimeter contours are its weakness (manufacturing) and for the first time in that type of failure I had to look at the thermal camera again and it indicated [30 - 35] degrees Celsius, which then, for an APU, has a similar effect to Arizona desert sun at noon in the middle of summer...I'll have to pay more attention to the temperature when an APU is running hot On the other hand, when they mention "fall" of the MoBo, I always think wrong, that is, from the work table to the floor and checking the PCB the card does not show fractures to the naked eye although I think it can also be affected if only It slips from my hands while I hold it and falls even with a "light" bump on the work table... If the owner previously powered that mainboard with the fuse and resistor in the wrong positions, did that cause the APU to fail? Greetings.

Thanks for another great video - if it helps ease the pain of that lengthy diagnosis in any way, I have recently had three PS5's with exactly the same short on that cap and circuit, and all had failed APUs! Even though it was an impossible repair, it is great watch!
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
Thank you! Quite unfortunate but at least it was a donated console and not one I had paid $200 for.
@martinnash0079 ай бұрын
Underneath that inductor that you were chasing around for the short, looked like a small solder bridge. Was the liquid metal causing the short on the crack of the APU die? Interesting video.
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
I think when the APUs fail, the internal heat build-up in that spot in the corner causes the crack. It's just a theory.
@meow21089 ай бұрын
very nice,,, maybe get the apu on the donor board and installed there is that possible?
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
You would need to move several ICs over, not just the APU. I'm just not ready to do that.

Thank you for sharing. I am wondering could you have used UART for finding what kind of faults are registered in the console.
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
I did read the error codes with UART. I believe it was "General Power Failure"
@mm00779 ай бұрын
@@ToltecMerc Thank you and Interesting, I thought it would have generated some sort of codes linked directly to the APU due to the obvious damaged you discovered but clearly not but just wishful thinking. The code system or algorithm would need to be much more sophisticated to pinpoint that kind of specific disgnosis. It's plausible and perhaps not impossible.

Everyone uses the term south bridge and north bridge. What exactly are they ??????
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
South Bridge is just a common term used to describe a secondary microprocessor. It is a complete processor on its own but its job is to handle tasks that need to be done without using the power hungry APU. The South Bridge is active in standby mode and in this case handles getting the machine ready to turn on.

Another question. Why can’t you replace APU????
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
The APU is married to other components on the board. All would have to be changed together. Those parts are also married to a chip in the Blu-Ray drive. I have yet to attempt to remove a PS5 APU. I'm sure I will eventually but not yet. I don't have the proper tools. You need a BGA machine to do it safely and properly and good ones are very expensive. I just can't justify the cost of it.

Hello Sir, thank you for showing all these repairs. I'm trying to get some practise with PS4s South Bridge reballing but I keep struggling with the manual placing of the balls on the chip. I even tried with a reballing station, but the stencil didn't align perfectly and the balls get stucks underneath it. Since I want to try the complete manual way, like you are doing in your videos, what is the name of the tool you are using to place and adjust the balls on the pads? And also to dispense the green uv mask.
@ToltecMerc9 ай бұрын
That "tool" is just a needle mounted on a plastic handle. The handle was from some cheap dollar store dental cleaning tools. I removed what was originally mounted and mounted needles on the end. One is bent and one is straight. It is a very crude but effective tool that I seem to use all the time.
