First of all, the lobbyists for the banking industry will try their hardest to not let that happen. The banks like to keep people financially illiterate. Second, having the knowledge is one thing, but having the discipline to utilize that knowledge is quite another. When I was working in an investment bank, in our division (12-15 people), all of us have a finance degree or other business-related degrees and more than half of us have MBA; so all of us know a thing or two about personal finance . But yet, a few of us were still living paycheck to paycheck; even though, each of us was making between $200,000 - $800,000 (salary + bonus)/year. If you are living above your means, then you are going to still be broke, regardless of how much money you bring in.

3:36 Here an example how I made my first 16k work for me. I have a car which was paid off and still had value but each day its was losing value so I used my car as collateral for personal loan to re-invest the loan all in 12/2018 to TSLA and still planning to wait out the 72 month on this loan. All I can say I don’t regret one bit the personal loan cause now its about 8 time its value.

To build wealth, try 50% investments, 30% needs, and 20% wants. It’ll be tough and you will have to live below your means but over time it’ll pay off.

About twelve years ago, with my then-girlfriend, I went through a minor embarrassing experience. Our computer broke down, so we had to go and buy a new one. The embarrassing part is we had to split the purchase between her credit card (which had a 500$ limit) and both our bank cards. As we walked out the store with the new PC, I asked her why can't she just raise her credit limit. She said: "No! That's how people lose control, spend more than they have, and spend the rest of their lives in debts." Yeah, ok, I know some people are just big spenders. But I know we aren't. So could we just raise it for the next time we need to buy something expensive? She refused! In her mind, it was inevitable: someone with a large credit limit will automatically become a big spender. Two years later, after we split. Up to that point in my life, I never had a credit card. Unfortunately, no credit card = no credit history = no way I could ever get a loan for, well, anything. I knew that! So, I went to my bank online, and asked for a credit card. Since it was my first one, the limit was set at $500. My plan was simple: Use it to pay for everything, never charge more than what I earn, and pay it in full before the end of the month. Soon, my bank offered to raise my credit limit to $1 000. I accepted. Then it was $2 000, $5 000, $7 500, $10 000, etc. I accepted each time. But it never influenced me to become a big spender. I keep putting it back to zero before the end of the month. About 6 years ago, many bad things happened at once, and I had to put about $6 000 on my card. By then, I had a good credit record. So, the bank made me an offer: A $10 000 bank credit at 3,5% interest. "Your credit card charges 19.9% interest. So, take our $10 000, use it to clear your credit card, and pay us back at a 3.5% rate instead." Which I did. Today, I am still poor. (Kids support for 4 children does that to you) But at the same time, the limit on my credit card is so high I could use it to buy a new car. Which I won't. But now, I am secure in the fact that I am covered, no matter what financial catastrophe happens. Also, with all the reward points programs that comes with it, I get $100-$200 back every year. And I have a great credit history, something very important in that day and age. I am now free of child support. So, once I figure out how to make money, I know I'll be able to handle it properly to make sure it's value grows. So, yeah, that basic money skill (rise the credit limit but never use it) changed the game for me, for it prevented me to become homeless 6 years ago.

This is normal, good advice for the most part. I must be the only low wage earner who wants to pay taxes, I swear. When you have to walk or ride a bicycle, potholes and other issues are annoying while we go to the public library. Many of us, not to be rude or degrade our class or whatever, are just going to blow our return.. You get "so excited." :(

Regarding #13. Not once, was "deal with cash", mentioned. Cash costs you, nor a business nothing to use. It beats getting nickel and dimed, by the banks. Why should trying to spend money, cost you money?

There is no need to pay a banking fee--ever. I've had my bank accounts free at Charles Schwab for 20 years. No minimum balance for my interest checking account, no monthly fee. Fidelity has the same deal, plus they have a 2% rebate Visa that deposits the rebate monthly into my brokerage account. You can have the 2% deposited to your kid's 529, instead, if you like. Self-made, I left NY at 14 and started out on my own as a bus boy in SF with $200 in my pocket. Be Frugal, invest, learn how stocks work, develop lifetime habits that keep your money at a distance from one of its worst enemies--you. Do not ever take on consumer debt or borrow to buy assets that will depreciate. Debt enslaves. Do not give in to the brainwashing that advertising pushes. You only want the stuff because they tell you you do. Do not voraciously consume. Value experiences, especially with family, over stuff. Buy your cars as lease returns--for cash. I'm on my third car of my life. A 2011 328i, stick. Fun to drive. Bought it as a lease return, still under warranty, for $21K. It's still pristine but blue books for less than $5K. Keep them until they won't go anymore. Become your own financial advisor. Plan your income tax strategy the year before. Read JK Lasser annually. No one can have your financial best interests in mind better than you do. I watch the market, read The Journal (and many other pubs) every day. I worked at a stock brokerage firm in my 20s just long enough to pass the Series 7, get my stockbroker license, and FA designation so I could manage my own money professionally for life, then I went back to working in tech. Spend time with your kids. Your time is the most valuable thing you can give anyone. Become intimate with the 8th wonder of the world--compounded rate of return. Sit down with your children and create a spreadsheet that shows them how it works, and demonstrates how the difference between starting to invest at 23 vs 30 is the difference between retiring with $2M vs $4M. Pay more for quality but always negotiate for the best price. Get a job that has you travel so you can accumulate miles/points. Build up your points and miles with credit cards. Churn cards for bonus miles. My kids are grown now and as little ones they always flew with me in first class on family trips at least once per year, but I never paid money for the first class seats nor the hotel upgrades. The whole time they both were at UC (no student loans) we never paid for a flight to visit them nor bring them home during breaks. Pennies turn into dollars, dollars turn into wealth, and if you're doing that right it'll become a game that you'll enjoy along the way.

I'm switching from Allstate to State Farm. The savings equals $50/month which I can invest. My insurance business is growing. Insurance when it renews, pays the benefits counselor/sales person. For the rest of my life, as long as my customers renew, I'm set. Some agents bring home $1 million annually on their renewals. Negotiating debt has worked wonders for me. E.G. every other year I find out who can insure me for less money. Switching to 0% interest cards has helped as well.
