Wow, I didn't know there were ants small enough to live in acorns!

When I got mine i thought the testtube was empty. I had to look twice. They are smaller than minors of messor barbarus. Honest 1 minor could beat up 2-3 of those guys... BUT they dont take a shit and are not as shy as i thought. They do crawl on your finger to 'attack' lel

3:55 there is even a study about their tandem rum. Distance does not affect their success rate but a more experienced runner does increase its chance from 75 to 95%ish. Just one thing you gotta take care of: they will drown super easily. 5:05 about honey. The *water it down* thing is a MISQUOTE FROM A PROFESSOR. He used to water it down cause he had to overlook 100 colonies and this way he could use a surringe. Ants do NOT need honey watered down. Its merely convenient for serving it in water dispencers and whatnot. In fact: giving pure honey is ideal since it can never ever rot until its all used up.

I just bought some Acorn Ants. Can they still make underground colonies like in those sand ant farms or only acorn and wood?
@MyLivingWorldsAnts

These ants can live in soil, but deffo for best results they should nest in either wood or some kind of nut shell.

I had these in my kitchen all the time. I wish I was able to pinpoint where their nest was. Couldn't even find an entry point or even locate where they go after feeding on spilled juice drops. They didn't have or make those trails you normally see and are able to follow.

Ahh yes this species tends not to create trails and forage in very small groups or sometimes independently

@@mongoman908 start with putting everything in a big container so any escapees will fall in the container depending on what your moving them in you could use a cue tip and collect the workers queen and brood and put it in the nest If your moving them in a acorn they will never come out and they will move in it instantly

I found a colony, should I leave them in the acorn or put them in a test tube?
@MyLivingWorldsAnts
@MyLivingWorldsAnts 3 жыл бұрын
To avoid injuring them don't open up the acorn, although they prefer nesting in acorns and wood, they will happily live in tubes, instead get a tub large enough and put a barrier all the way around the top then place a fresh test tube with water and cotton and as the acorn dries out they will consider moving into the tube

@@MyLivingWorldsAnts I kind of got impatient so I carefully opened the acorn up (no ants were harmed), but there was no queen inside, is it possible for an acorn to only have workers?

You don't really need to since it's probably an established colony. I'd go for a tiny outworld with some punctured acorns
