I wanna take this opportunity to reach out and say the director of Butterfly Kisses Erik Kristopher Myers took his own life roughly a year ago. It is great that this movie is now getting more attention and it is an honor to him and his family as they have seen a growing swell of love towards the film

The second you talked about The Bay I paused the video and watched the movie. I'm so shocked that there were so few views and no comments. It's insanely good. I was invested every step of the way and the ending felt so unfinished in the best way possible. The way it was all created is insane.

I was so excited to see Incantation on this list!! It has easily become one of my favorite horror movies since watching. I loved how much time they spent developing the mother’s care for her daughter, I think that’s something that is skipped out on a lot of horror movies that involve a family dynamic and it made everything (especially the ending) so much more effective. Great list! I love found footage and there’s a few on here I’ve never heard of. Just wanted to comment a little backstory on Willow Creek as I worked as the only PA on the film (and also played the ukulele man in the bar). The first half of the movie (with one or two exceptions) with the locals was kind of an actual documentary. Those were all actual people/squatchers that live in the town that our actors were interviewing. Glad you enjoyed it (especially the tent scene which had 4 of us standing in various spots around the tent and making the sounds etc) and thanks for the shoutout! Love the channel!

Gotta say that, over the years, found footage has become my favorite genre as well. The sheer breadth of quality is so much wider than any other genre, but when done right, it really satisfies. Hey Sarah! First, congrats on your one on the way 😃. Secondly, I found the bay on Netflix like…9 years ago? I wanna say? I enjoyed it a lot. Even if the main character is a bit annoying, she is a reliable narrator and does seem to look genuinely disturbed or disgusted at different points in the interview segments; the lead doctor at the hospital is my favorite character though. Finally, I’m glad you mentioned Grave Encounters, even just in passing. I love the tongue-in-cheek homages to shows like Ghost Adventures (Zak Bagans actually live-tweeted watching it and loved it). It’s actually the movie that got me into horror in the first place.

Awwwww a HUGE congrats on your upcoming cutie petutie!! And Merci for Gonjiam. Saw it when it first dropped in 2018 and knew it was excellent when my 22 yr old son (who is quite blase about horrors and thinks the majority are crap) said it terrified him, so wanted to re-watch but couldn't remember the name. Bless ☺☺ Edit: Yes....would agree it is the best found footage movie to date and Incantation (for me) the 2nd best so far, for 2022!! Lolz@ Willow Creek. I enjoyed it. Although many peeps thought the ending was lame - With thousands of people disappearing in your forests every year? Who's to say it isn't true? Certainly made me think twice before going camping alone in the forests of Quebec. Dem Big Feet have been sighted everywhere in N.America? So that movie made it's point - Ima keep my wise arse home. @@serenacelestine : Although I LOVED Rec? and at my old age (55 lolz) takes a lot to scare meh? Would have to admit Gonjiam is on a whole different level. In my humble opinion.. if the ending of REC was the scariest part of that movie? Gonjiam is like that (on steroids) from beginning to end. Barely gives us time to relax or breathe 😂 Like that you mentioned REC. Spain has been kicking ARSE with Horror and 'Veronica'? Also scared my cynical butt. Although recently Asia (aka S.Korea/Thailand) have been dominating the Horror market recently? Spain has showed that they can compete and MORE on a Global scale. Example being 'The Grandmother' 2021. Are you serious? Atmosphere/plot/tension/ etc 100%. Kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end (major tension)....If Paco's vision was : OLD PEOPLE ARE SUSPECT AND CREEPY? He aced it but the last 20 mins? Blew my mind!! Won't lie - the plot twist was done before in another 80's Horror ? But NEVER SAW IT COMING...until the end. Kudos to Paco Plaza (Director). Point is: They are testing the waters? And have proven they are a force to be reckoned with...as concerns Horror.

I have to recommend Savagelands. Made fascinating use of the found footage/mockumentary horror trope by having the found footage be still images captured on a camera. It’s done in the style of a true crime doc, centered around a man who was convicted of crimes on a scale that he couldn’t possibly have achieved, and he captured grainy pictures of the whole incident on his camera. Really interesting commentary on xenophobia and the US justice system. Super underrated. And if you hate shaky cam, there’s none of that because the found footage parts are still images.

Lake Mungo is scarier than Gojiam because it feels real, the acting feels genuine, the fact there is not a single paranormal thing going on until the end, the movie relies heavily on realistic scenarios just to have the cherry on top with that last lingering iconic scene, it's a movie you never forget.

Based on the three films I've actually from this list ("Afflicted", "The Bay" and "Borderlands"), I have to give the others also a shot when I get the change (only "Incantation" is a streaming service I currently subscribed too so it might take a while). "The Bay" is one of my favorite found footage horror films ever made and "Afflicted" was also incredible and a surprising genre film. "Borderlands" was just good, though I have mixed feelings about the ending (like how anyone was able to retrieve the footage, maybe I missed something but always struck me as a little weird that someone actually found the footage). Now, when it comes to great found footage style films that might be more obscure, I would recommend the following three: 1) "Found Footage 3D" (2016), a film crew tries to make the first 3D Found Footage film, only to discover that the location they are filming at might give them more material than they had hoped. 2) "Capture, Kill, Release" (2016), a couple explores the wife's darkest fantasy: committing a murder... From planning to execution, this one for me was very disturbing in how casual everything was. 3) "Evidence" (2013), a semi-found footage film and more of a thriller (though, close enough to horror, the killer acts like a slasher villain and wield a plasma torch as a weapon, with some very brutal kills), two detectives analyze some found footage to discover what happened at a local gas station. Despite not being completely found footage (the cop segments while they are looking and discussing the footage isn't, if I remember correctly), it does something very interesting with the genre...

@@meghanhixon3241 Different film :) First, I thought it too but "Evidence" (2012) is a completely different film than "Evidence (2013). The 2012 film is about a camping trip gone wrong, the 2013 film is about a buss of people who stop at a gas station, before killer turns up.

Thank you for these amazing recommendations! Gonjiam was TERRIFYING and butterfly kisses was a wild ride! Definitely gonna watch the others and come back to comment on them too! Edit: Incantation was AWESOME!!! Willow Creek wasn’t really my thing but lord did it feel real! Very Blair witchy Edit 2: unfortunately searching for Afflicted I got spoiled on what the virus was so I ended up not watching :/

Thank you so much for this list! As a rabid horror fan, sometimes I feel like I've seen it all and have trouble finding movies I haven't seen. I agree with you on SO many films, and you mentioned some of my very favorite found footage ones--Butterfly Kisses is absolutely awesome, so is The Bay. I was surprised that there were movies on your list I hadn't heard of! So tonight I was in a kind of mellow mood and decided to try an "easy watch", one that would just kind of roll along for me. HA! I watched Willow Creek, and DAMN! Watched it alone in the dark on my laptop, and I really got the creepy crawlies and was genuinely scared during THAT scene. Yeah, the one you mentioned. Holy guacamole that was definitely a hidden gem! I would never have given it a chance because of the "Bigfoot" reference in the description, but wow! SO glad you recommended it! Sheesh--just finished it and I'm still creeped out! You are the bomb.

Awesome list! I’ve seen roughly half of the ones you mentioned and loved them all. I plan on checking out the other ones soon. I also wanted to recommend one for you that I’ve never heard anyone talk about. It’s called Leaving D. C. It’s a VERY indie film (maybe only two people in it) and the horror is extremely subtle, but also very unsettlingly as well. I hope you get a chance to watch it. Cheers! 🤓

HI Sarah, What an interesting list. I have seen about half of your list and I find myself enjoying found footage movies too. I hadn't really given them much thought as a horror subgenre but as I have seen half of your list, I must like them! A couple of other movies that I liked were Grave encounters (which you had mentioned) and three others Hell House LLC, REC the Spanish film, (as well as the American remake 'Quarantine) , and finally the taking of Deborah Logan. Congratulations on the bump! You might have to limit the frights for a while!!! 😁👍

Sarah!!!! Your baby bump is adorable 🥰 Also, love this list. Let me say Butterfly Kisses! It’s filmed entirely in my hometown in Ellicott City, Maryland. DC 101 is our local radio station and all of this is to my surprise because I had never heard of it until your video. I have walked these areas just like the areas in Blair witch and Eduardo and Haxan films also have ties here in Maryland. I was a property manager on one of their properties they probably used for filming on some of their movies. It’s just an homage to Ellicott City and I love that. I’ve always wondered why more movies weren’t filmed here because it’s a very very creepy place plagued by fires and floods and disasters. I was sorry to hear about Erik’s passing and my condolences to his friends and family🤍 Edit: I just also watched Willow Creek. A wild ride and you were right about the 20 min tension build. Also this was written and directed by Bobcat Goldthwait , you’re too young but he was a constant character actor and comedian from the 80’s😎😊

Thank you so much for this video! Best of wishes on your Next Chapter! 🐣 An exciting time! I also love FF horror and have added 3 movies to my watchlist that I've never seen before. Going even more off the beaten path, there is a little British KZbin FF horror called "XIII" that I thought was very well-done. It's only 45 minutes and is definitely an amateur situation, but I got the creeps. It's about 2 college kids who find a very creepy book at the library and decide to do their school project on it.
