Completely agree with everything in this video-there’s nothing I’d add except to emphasize the impact of adding texture. Mixing different textures, both tactile and visual, can really elevate a space. For example, I love textured fabrics, and even the wrinkled look of paper of a Noguchi lamp bring layers and interest to a space. I’ve invested in custom curtains, lighting with dimmers and three-way switches, and original art and antiques. While these pieces can be pricey, they’re worth it for the personality and warmth they bring and I was able to plan it overtime. For decor, I often find affordable items from small shops on Etsy that reflect my style. my next project per your list is repainting and color drenching my closet and bathroom.

The only open shelving I disagree with is in the kitchen. There's too much grease and schmutz around all the time that the doodads and dishes and glasses need cleaning all time. Annoying. Otherwise! Full wall bookcase with books, of course, punctuated with doodads over here. I could easily fill an hour describing the significance of each item on the shelves. Each has a story and/or meaning. I can sit and stare at them endlessly ❤

Since graduate school and the little incremental boosts in income over the years, I have purchased forever pieces (vintage kilims) and have reupholstered some family "gifts" (e.g., the feral tabby that Dad rescued chased the pointer and - "don't mind the blood stains - would you want this white linen slipper chair?"). Every year or two, I upgrade a few items and it's all cohesive. I have Bauhaus-design dining chairs with a French-looking table and an antique Chinese cabinet in my dining room. I agree with mixing styles. I moved from a 30's Craftsman-style bungalow to a 1940 cottage-style house and replacing the big, tufted sofa and main armchair from more traditional to mid-century worked so well - the houses are roughly the same size (1000 sq feet), yet I love this version of my living room.

These are such great tips, thank you!!!! Just wanted to mention something about the rice paper you talked about because it’s actually one of the cheaper options for lamps since it isn’t very sturdy. If you’re looking for the best paper you could get, washi paper is definitely it. It has a really nice texture, rich color, and is super durable, making it feel more timeless. Finding lampshades or lamps with washi paper is actually kind of hard, but I finally tracked one down, and it was totally worth it 😊

You are so right about window treatments, I moved into my first house in September. It had no curtains, and I felt so exposed all the time, and once I got the double curtain and drape set up in the dining room, cohesion set up in the kitchen and bedrooms slowly over time, it really makes the fastest and biggest difference in how you feel in your home.

Mid-Michigander here. Just had my 67th birthday in September, and have been a sub for a while now. Most of the wood in my house is a warm tone, but mixed with a few cooler tones. No matchy-matchy in my life. Just can't do it. Nope. I find vintage curtains at thrift stores a lot, sometimes still in their old, original packaging.

You do have to get lucky to find custom thrifted drapes. Over all my years thrifting I have a pretty good collection of them but you're not wrong, it's rare to thrift them. When I have found them, I feel so lucky, like I won the lottery. Custom drapes are so expensive to have made and when you find them thrifted, it feels like a gold mine!

I very much enjoy your channel and content. I think it would be interesting if you did a series whereby you addressed one design feature at a time, for example, window treatments. You could talk about length, solids vs. pattern, weight, hardware, etc. Many people don’t know what kinds of window treatments might be best for their space or window or how different treatments interact with sunlight and wall color. I think it’d be great if you offered some guidelines. ❤

On the topic of art/gallery walls - it really breaks the usual look if you mix up the shape of art. Like don't just hang ten square frames on the wall. For example, in my kitchen I put a small square painting of a lemon that I made myself and the some random ceramic fish I found when shopping for souvenirs on vacation. Now it just needs a third piece - sort of a rule of threes too - to finish it off, but I am still looking for the perfect thing

I agree about the towels. I do have a couple white ones, but they are textured. On the other hand, I hate super dark towels, like dark brown, black, or burgundy--ugh. Dark ones pick up lint over time and to me just look cheap. I also hate towels that are enormous and super thick. I'm not wasting my $$ drying those. My favorite are the ones that are somehow silky or velvety -feeling, very soft. I think they have some bamboo fiber in them.

How do people live with open shelving in kitchens? Do you take all your items off the shelf weekly and dust them, every cup/bowl/plate...etc/? I live in a region where after a single week, each surface is coated in a visible layer of dust you can see if you swipe your finger over it. I can't imagine that in a kitchen where oil and moisture are also floating in the air and coating everything. Maybe glass cupboard doors are better? That way you can showcase your pretty dishes/tools without needing to clean them constantly.

15 Items Paige thinks are important for a stylish home (but i counted 14, wtv) W: THERE IS A JUMPSCARE IN THIS VIDEO 01:05 #1 Warm Wood 02:25 #2 At least one unique piece of art (thrifted, personal) 04:05 #3 Large mirror 05:15 #4 Curate random, collectibles or quirky items and put them on display 06:40 #5 At least one lamp with a fabric shade (softer glow, rice paper works too) 07:50 #6 Open shelving 09:40 #7 Get warm LED light bulbs 10:26 #8 Pick things from different eras of design (not all trendy, not all danish, etc) _____> 11:32 JUMPSCARE + Ad 12:52 #8 Continuation: Mix styles 13:43 #9 If you can only paint one room, paint the bathroom 14:55 #10 Don't get white towels, make them unique 16:08 #11 Have a bowl, tray or a flower vase in the kitchen 17:40 #12 Have one classic, boring piece of furniture to ground the design 19:13 #13 Have a rug. 19:22 #14 Invest in window treatments, curtains. You can't thrift them. takeaways: - personality is key - roman shades are great - personally, i'd check the feng shui rules regarding the mirror tip

I hit your list on nearly everything. I’m in a beach house with a lot of very large windows. Several windows have no window treatment at all because they look out on the water and hills. Others have simple pleated fabric blinds. I feel like they suit the space because when they’re open, which is 90% of the time, they leave the entire space open to sunlight. The one area I would like to add something different is the primary bedroom, but I’m not sure what to do with a very large window. The room is small with a California king bed so I feel like anything in this room needs to be minimal. The one space in my house that I feel is off is our office. It’s the largest bedroom in the house at 14’ x 20’, and the one I spend the most time in because I’m the “back office“ for our business. There’s nothing really cohesive in this space. There is a separate sitting area with a chair and a half and an old tufted wing back chair that was my Nonna’s. I had Nonna’s chair reupholstered. My sister gave me a very comfy, massive, rolled arm chair and a half. I’m having both of these slipcovered so that will help. But honestly, the rest of the office could use some help. I would love to see more larger home office design ideas. The one area I felt you skipped and I know it’s not your favorite thing, is plants. I am blessed to have a home flooded with natural light and feel it would be sacrilegious not to have a few big-ass plants! I have four large Monstera and a 5’ tall Dracena. I also have a few smaller plants and tiny air plants. I also have a garden and a front porch jammed with plants and flowers. So I realize I’m a bit of a plant nut. But I do feel that every space should have at least one plant… something living and green in their space. It’s something to care for and nurture. Note: I love that you’re pronouncing “curtain“ with the ‘T’ annunciated.😆❤️

Light bulbs - if for some reason you can't get a dimmer for your light and don't want to spend a lot on smart bulbs, there are 3 step dimmers out there. It's just a normal light bulb, turn it on once and you get 100% light, turn it on again you get 50%, and turn it on again you get 25% light. Great alternative. :)

Not that I would disagree on getting quality window treatments but I’ve thrifted every set of curtains in my home. Granted a lot of them are just white linen/linen look or sheer to maximize sunlight, but I find it bizarre when interior say you can’t thrift curtains when thrift stores are overflowing with curtains. Finding high quality ones that work in your space? Sure can be hard, but you can do it. eBay and resellers also exist.
