Maybe “Never Been Any Reason “ didn’t do so well in other places, but in the Midwest it was absolutely HUGE ‼️ - And it STILL is. From St.Louis Missouri, and I didn’t know anyone who didn’t have that album. “Flat As A Pancake”‼️‼️ Saw them in Concert with Kansas and Missouri. 📻🙂

I liked Sweet, but they only played one particular song over and over the ballroom blitz. It wasn't until I had a computer that I found out they had other songs. I'm really happy with Fox on the Run. I used that song to say farewell to my very sick husband. I love you, Dave. ❤❤❤

@jaygardner6385Ай бұрын
OK, let's talk about Sweet. They started out as a bubblegum band, and never changed. The only reason that Little Willy Willy was so popular was because the lyrics were incredibly suggestive to middle school and young high school boys. With that tune any other set of lyrics would qualify as bubblegum. Fun fact for if you ever share this group again,. Their first album sold better than they expected. They still had contractual obligations that prevented them from touring immediately. They had 3 or 4 bar gigs, and they were the featured band for the Senior Party at Ruskin High School in Kansas, City, MO. The year was 1977. The seniors at Ruskin graciously voted to allow seniors from Hickman Mills High School to the concert.

They certainly did change. Ever hear "Action", "Love is Like Oxygen" or albums "Off The Record", "Level Headed", "Cut Above the Rest"? They morphed into a semi progressive band with a similair to ELO.

And yet ... to this day, you still here these on the radio. 😁 As far as the Lee Michaels comment about him recording all the instruments himself and try to find an artist who'll do that today. How about Wolfgang Van Halen? And Richie Kotzen? Rock on! 🤘

In what universe was "Jungle Boogie" underappreciated? It peaked at #4 on the Hot 100 and #2 R&B in 1974. It was the first really big hit for Kool & the Gang. Most of these songs made the Top 40; in fact only three of them didn't ("Surrender", "Never Been Any Reason" and "Whiskey Rock-A-Roller"). The other 12 songs were all certified hits. You wanna talk about underappreciated? How about "Rainy Jane" by Davy Jones of The Monkees? It got regional airplay in many major markets and still only made it to #52 on the Hot 100 in the summer of 1971. I know at least six people who bought that one when it came out, including my younger sister. That one should've made the Top 40. The funk band Mandrill should've had several songs that made the Top 40, but despite their popularity they never had a national Top 40 hit.

Badfinger was also hosed with their song "Baby Blue." This great song only made it to #14 and should have definitely made it into the top 5. "Mississippi Queen" never made it up the charts for one reason; that song has to be the loudest song ever recorded. I think radio stations were afraid to play it due to it's volume. "Little Willy" was way too bubblegum. The title was perfect for some great jokes for the jocks on the air. I used it to promote the mid-day jock at a station I worked at by telling every listener after I played the song "speaking of "Little Willy," John Gannon will be playing with it tomorrow between 10 and 2 on Fun-102-FM."

And yet we are familiar with a lot of these songs to this day. "Surrender" has been used in a number of hit movies and TV shows. Odd for a song that did not even breach the top forty.

How about some classic British hits of the era most of which barely nudged the Billboard Hot 100 - 1. Ride A White Swan by T Rex 2/ Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile) - Steve Harley And Cockney Rebel 3/ January by Pilot 4/ Down Down by Status Quo 5/ Anything by Slade 6/ And how about the songs of the US's own Suzi Quatro.

This was a fun video. But even though some of these tracks didn't crack the top 40, many of them did receive extensive airplay on Album Rock radio during the 70s. Boston, Cheap Trick, Joe Walsh, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain, etc. were staples on Album Oriented Rock stations. (And many can still be heard today on Classic Rock radio.) So while some of these songs may have not performed well on the pop charts, they aren't forgotten.

"No Matter What" was rejected from "All Things Must Pass" and given by George to Badfinger. "Coconut" was the biggest hit Nilsson ever had that he wrote and sang (Everybody's Talking was written by Fred Neil and Without You was written by Badfinger.) "Little Willy" has inspired some controversy over the years especially if you know what a "Willy" is in British English (heh heh), but the song was actually named after the Singer's Cat.
