Similar memory. In 1988 I worked a temp job during the summer. I was in school. The tasks I had to do were next level tedium and boring. But the people I worked with did it for a living. I recall sitting on a picnic bench with some people and someone said I wish it were the weekend. And this young woman said “You ever notice we wish our lives away” That always stayed with me. There is some woman out there now probably about 60 years of age that has no idea her words of wisdom are still thought of almost 40 years later. I live in New England and I really do not like the cold weather, but I no longer wish for spring and summer. They will eventually come.

Hi Seve. I live in a high rise building in Montreal. A long time ago, I had a job where my boss used to tell me that "If you see something that needs to be done, and you want to gripe about it not being done, or someone being messy, instead of spending time griping, Just Do what needs to be done yourself." Hence, Every day I spend some time doing small chores in the building, cleaning up after my neighbors, sorting trash, and prepping bins to go out on trash Days (Mon / Thurs). As a minimalist, I hate clutter, trash on the floor, and the basement a mess. And I've griped about it, up the chain of command, to no avail, so instead of waiting for someone to come do their jobs correctly, I just go do it myself. because I can do it much better, much quicker, and to my own standards !! And everybody wins. My friends are like, why bother, it's not your job ?? And my answer to that is always, "Because I can and it matters to me."
@Aphrodite19850073 ай бұрын
@jeremy1350 you are an extraordinary person! I wonder what would happen if you stopped cleaning up for, say, just a week.... I am sure others see and enjoy your work..Maybe somebody else would take up... I know, I am being very optimistic here! Anyways... May you be blessed for all those many small good deeds you do, dear friend.
@jeremy13503 ай бұрын
@@Aphrodite1985007 I know what would happen. There would be garbage all over the floor, all over the building, nobody cleans the basement. Even the maintenance crew does not do it, and we don't have crew on staff that does any of that kind of work. Hell, they fired the cleaners a long time ago. (they call that budget cuts) If the garbage is not in the bins, it won't get in the bins. I cannot get the folks who take the bins outside to do a job properly. And they won't allow me to do that job, (they call that insurance liability) so I need to make sure that everything is done before they come on garbage mornings. So all they have to do is fire up the four wheeler and drag the bins outside. I've watched garbage pile up for weeks on end, before I decided to step in myself. And like I said, I've spent YEARS harping on this issue to upper management and even to the Vice President of the company that owns this building. They blow me smoke, make promises, but never follow through. So in the end, I got tired of waiting for someone else to do this, so instead I just do it, and it is done the way it should be done. Quietly, and without fan fare. None of my neighbors know who it is that cleans up after them anyways, except for my close friends who live here. Nobody else cares because they still drop shit where ever they drop it and they don't think twice about cleaning up after themselves. (I call them pigs)

Your comment about giving up wanting to move elsewhere is a good reminder that no matter where we go, or where we live, we take ourselves with us. We are often the common denominator in our repeated misfortune, but it tempting to look outside and blame other factors (which then alleviate us of any personal responsibility). It’s “easier” but it’s so disempowering. Realising that we largely have control over what happens to us, and our perception of that - good or bad - is the most liberating thing that we can ever experience.

@saraperkins80723 ай бұрын
@@Fnugilet I saved the sentimental things for last. By the time i decluttered sentimental items, I had become a decluttering pro. I kept in mind that if everything is sentimental then I am left with nothing special. I kept my dad's wood toys that I helped him make when I was a child, 3 or 4 greeting cards. Since I am not the holder of family photos, I got rid of any pictures that I did not know where they were taken or who was in them. There are a couple things I am having a hard time parting with. My high school graduation sweater, an old favorite Tigger sweater that I used to love when I was a young teen and my grandmother's Corelleware. I still have all these items and I justify keeping them because I have the space. I have a few pieces of my grandmother's dishes that I use on a regular basis, but the rest I can't seem to part with. I also know that if the spare dishes were to spontaneously combust, I would be relieved. @Fnugilet if you are having some trouble decluttering, start easy. Dana K White says to start with obvious trash and 'duh donations.' Also, clothes were the easiest for me. if it did not fit my today body, or I wouldn't buy it again, then i tossed it or donated the best of the best hoping it would get a new home. Hope this helps. I am cheering you on as you work on your decluttering journey!

I am a 30-year-old Ukrainian woman, and I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. All the points in this video are very relevant to me, but 1, 2 and 11 hit me the hardest. 1. I worked for 5 years in a government office job, and I hated Mondays to the point of insanity. Every Sunday I dreamed that Friday would finally come, even though I was respected at work and there were a lot of positive things, and I learned a lot. At the beginning of 2024, I finally quit that job and switched to freelancing completely. I've been working as a book proofreader for almost 7 years now, but it used to be just a side hustle, and now it's my main, project-based job. I love all days of the week, but I especially LOVE Mondays because it means I'll get a new book from one of the publishers I work with. So I'll read something new and get paid for it. 2. I've always been proud of my country and loved it, but I know about all the disadvantages of living here, and I'm not happy with many things, even though I never planned to leave Ukraine. Also, I have lived in rural areas for 18 years, and for the last 12 years I have been living in a small town (where I studied at university), although I have always dreamed of living in a big city. However, when the full-scale war began, I fell in love with my country even more and began to appreciate what I have. Our country has been developing very rapidly in recent years, especially in service and technology. In any village, you can get a manicure, makeup, or hairstyle done that no one abroad would ever dream of, at a cheap price. Shops are open without holidays, siestas and weekends (even on Christmas and Easter). You can pay with your card almost EVERYWHERE. You can get a bank statement on your phone in 30 seconds, while in Poland, for example, you have to pay money for it, wait a month and go to the bank to get it!!! Free education, medicine, sick leave, maternity leave, vacations for at least 24 days a year... Low crime rate, temperate climate without cataclysms, fertile land... Of course, our country is poor, and there is corruption, low wages, and war... But I watch, listen, read about other countries where I used to dream of living, for example, and I realize that they are backward in many aspects compared to our country - the United States in terms of security and social guarantees, Europe in terms of service... + there is a different language, religion, mentality in every foreign country... And I realize that I would not want to live anywhere else but in Ukraine. And (I'm terrified as I'm typing this - I don't want to attract bad luck) my small town, which I disliked so much, is far from the battlefield, calm and safe, even though our small community has already lost several hundred people in the war and hundreds or thousands more are still on the battlefield. 11. I decided not to conform to other people's standards of fun. I have several friends who constantly invite me to sit somewhere, have a drink, listen to music, because it's fun. But I have much more fun reading a book and playing with my cats. And I decided that I don't want to fit in with anyone anymore - I'll just go for coffee with them a few times a month, but without alcohol, dancing, etc.

Or as my father a former US Navy officer and scientist used to say, " If it suits you, it tickles me" ! He had🇩🇪🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 German/ American ancestry and a great sense of humor too!

Don’t you have papers with lists all over the place? What do you do about that..? Because I feel I need to write things to organize my mind . So then I have list all over the place and it just makes it messy. Any advice ?

Do you speak Italian? Something about your rhythm of speech reminds me of it. (I also heard ciao at the end... but I know many people use ciao to say goodbye that do not speak Italian.)

Whether we quit 15 or adapt 20 things. It’s not us but but our mind that rules us. It is never satisfying. Life cannot be simplified as long as we live. All this content which is also part of Social media is a mind gimmick especially for the creater.
@Tay2029 күн бұрын
While that may be true for you and some few; for others, these things help with calming overstimulation and tempering expectations about life (nervous system). It’s about being mindful and tuning in to your physiological needs along with your mental strengths/limits. Ultimately, the goal is to be present, and these ideas help people. New neural pathways do not take all that long to form, and quite literally change your mind. You don’t have to be ruled by your mind and by circumstance forever.

Why do people complain about Finland? My associations are all positive, other than Russia being too close. Our US education system is falling apart and we're always citing Finnish education levels, women in politics, nature, the baby boxes, etc.

I think it's mostly about the weather here, and also I guess it's part of our culture to somehow depreciate what we have.

@@amychen2504 Not that much, I don't know anyone who would actively worry about Russia. But the war surely has indirectly impacted our economy a lot during the past couple of years, which causes some worries.

Yeah it's mainly the weather, darkness and lack of liveliness. Perfect place for introverts but not the best for people who want to be out and do a lot of stuff with people all the time I guess 😄

Yeah as a Finn I would say that the problem is the seasons in Finland. It feels like 70% of the year it's cold, wet and dark. It affects people's mood and they feel down and depressed. That's why people often go abroad during the winter or move out of Finland completely.

Focus on what you can directly effect, and directly effects you. Start with yourself, then your home, then family and friends, then maybe coworkers. The rest is useless distraction.

I quit social media a few years ago. The friends who were really my friends continue to text with me and we visit when we can. Before my son was born I wrote letters and birthday cards. I also cultivated a better friendship with myself. I think social media gives the appearance of friends and social connection but in actuality it feels very empty and lonely. Interacting with people in real life in a true and genuine way feels a lot more authentic.

Yes, as others have written, I call and meet people. My social circle is fairly small so I am able to keep my friendships happy and active without overwhelming myself. Social media (instagram) was for me a way to see what others were doing but it wasn't really connecting with them, rather just getting life updates (mainly from life highlights and not the truth). I am not saying everyone needs to delete social media but relying solely on that is not a great strategy to keep a healthy social life. All the best! 🌿
