Been working in the hotel/restaurant business for 13 years, and just finished my three year bachelor degree in hotel management. Staring as a duty manager next week. I am enjoying your tips and insights to better prepare myself for this new job. I have somewhat some knowledge about what the employer wants me to do, but still havent gotten any specific details. This is giving me some pointers to prepare for the unexpected. Thanks!

Hey Mike. Very good video and I completely agree on your points. For internal promotions it is crucial to not keep doing your old job as you mention. But it is also important to remember; who you were in that job, is what got you the manager role. Too often I see people leave work as a co-worker on Friday and when they come in Monday in their new manager role, they are a completely different person. It is important to embrace your new role, but also give yourself time and understand that it is a transition. You need to learn and remember what were the qualities that got you the new role. You do not need to change who you are in 24 hours. Keep up the fantastic work you are doing Mike.

Hey Mike, I was just wondering if you could make a video analyzing "the one minute manager" book/training guide.

Hey Mike! First I wanted to say, I really like your channel, it has helped me! So I have a question, I am a new first time manager/leader. Most of my background is in culinary, but the position I was recently hired for is in retail. So my question is, 90% of my staff are all female, and are older than me, and have been with the company for years, and I'm the youngest employee for the company. What is the best way for me to go about to earn their respect? One of my staff, who is a few years older than me has already challenged me when I've assigned her to do stuff. Thank you!

I believe there is great power in bring in coffee... sometimes donuts. Lol. You’re young and in a new industry... so you already know you don’t know it all therefore don’t pretend you do. Ask questions and actively listen. Show respect to those women. Don’t allow yourself to be walked on but allow others to know they know more.

I certainly echo Mike’s comments. I’d also say earning respect takes time and consistency. Most of my life as a leader I’d been younger than my staff - yet marrying your advantages (new perspective, drive, creativity) with what you can see in your staff (experience and knowledge) and being open about those differences over time will do the job! Wishing you all the best for your new role!

Hey Mike! Thanks for all the great insight as I've stepped into a manager role! Question: What would YOU do if your Supervisor/Executive places a lot of the "accomplishing the task" not the managing of the team expectation on you?

Help! Employee cussed at me today in front of a customer.

What’s your plan? Is this acceptable behavior?
@mackredneck Жыл бұрын
Definitely not! I reached out to my co manager and my boss who is on vacation. This has been going on for some time now. Just disrespectful behavior. So I am going to suggest a sit down with us managers and the employee. If I have a one on one with the employee I feel like it will just be shrugged off.
