I am adamant that a lot of the flooding around is due to them not doing the ditches and river dredging anymore. The river that runs through the local town is so full of reeds and silt, it cannot take the water anymore. Plus they have built on so much the the surrounding floodplain !.

With all of the technology in the world, there's still no communication. The homestead is such a peaceful place. We had Thanksgiving today (Thurs) in the USA. Holidays are so much work for the person who does the cooking and decorating. But, keep calm and carry on, right?

The trees and their roots on the mountain hold the earth and rocks together stopping the erosion of rain during storms . You are right many have learned this lesson the hard way .

lol cup of tea and to break wind! lol I’m not sure if this will apply to you sean but if we plastic up anything in the PNW ( Pacific Northwest) we would have a major mold problem on our hands. If it was me I’d put those windows in and open up your summer house to light! Mold is very hard to get rid of here. Our climate is very similar to yours!!!!

There are over a dozen reports on the floods during storm Dennis, in 2020, available on line. I just looked up Rhondda flood reports on google. As you said the river itself didn't contribute to the floods it was water from the valley sides. The reports are there for everyone to see and if your job is flood prevention in the council, I would expect you to have read them. Leasons learned and published, what were the actions, have they been carried out, and were they effective? Good to see the homestead is unharmed.

I do enjoy your reflections whilst you are in your allotment (homestead). I have a small allotment in the heart of Durham city. It is beautiful and filled with robins. I love it when dusk starts to fall and the light begins to fade that seems to be when they come to life, flying all around. Trees grow from their shoot tips so the ribbon will stay at the same height. For instance, fences attached to tree trunks don’t rise up as time passes by.

Our allotments flooded in North Cardiff and another 6 inches and the Taff would have breached the flood defences. Initial data is saying that Pontypridd had more rainfall in 12 hours that they would get in the all of November Also, due to the rapid increase in temperature they was a thaw of the snow in the Beacons which added the water in the Taff. Whilst having your allotment flooded is annoying it's nothing compared to having your house under water. The major recent floods in the area have been 1960,1979,2020 and 2024.

The rubbish from felling is called slash. That sort of thing happens here in New Zealand, the most significant flooding and damage happened last year. The slash blocks everything. Not twigs, logs of wood.

So glad all is safe and sound on the homestead. The river looks so much calmer now- not the roaring ,torrent ! Here in BC erosion of the land and clear cutting our trees has led to many horrible mudslides down the mountains and homes completely demolished. The trees hold the land together during our constant rainfalls. You would think our forestry departments would learn. Yes, they reforest with small trees when they clear cut but it takes years for those trees to provide the root structure to hold the land together. Logging practices are gradually improving but tough lessons have been learned and relearned just as you mentioned in your neck of the woods. Nature has a way of looking after itself if only man would listen and take heed. Looking forward to seeing you build your pond and a waterfall feature sounds amazing. Always a project Sean. hello Sean, As soon as you started talking about the trees on a slope and the flood I knew what you were going to say. Further reference for your answers in the box the flood in Calgary, Canada in 2013 that caused great devastation had also trees absence for protagonists (with too much rain all at one time) but it was also not only the branches. The trees when they are living in the hills are acting like sponges. Their root systems are able to hold a large amount of water. When they are gone the water simply runs off. My mum had to chop some trees down near her garage as neighbours complained about them, since then her garage floods whenever there is rain. I think the trees drink a lot of the water as well, trees are great protectors of the planet, you always find when they chop them down there are floods:(

My garden is near a river and floods onto the vegetable patch several times a year nowadays, didn't used to but vast housing estates have been built upstream on land that usually used to hold floods. Have to adapt to what cannot be changed so have raised beds now.

That's so disappointing. Here in Oregon USA they require developments to put in ponds that hold back the runoff for a more normal result. They also put in water plants to clean the water.

Along the rivers edge you could put 4 ft tall 2" thick willow stakes....cut fresh and driven right in...they will sprout and put out roots to help hold bank....if you harvest new growth willow make great weaving sticks for fences trellises ect.

1000s of years ago, great Britain was covered in forests naturally and man eventually cut the vast majority down for building and fuel. A tree will naturally grow in almost any soil. Only on bare rock like mountains is where trees won't grow.

Unfortunately, these days it's all about getting the job done as quickly and cheaply as possible - no care or pride taken in a task anymore. Same here in Norfolk re cold, I was out in the garden today doing more cutting back and re-covering the plants - the fleece will stay on this time as I've made them more secure! Temps going down to poss -1 tonight. I was out about 10.30am and was in by 1.30pm as by 2 the temp really drops quickly! I don't like the damp cold! Sean it's good to see the homestead is not damaged.with regards to the flooding if the council pulled there finger out there is al ot they could do to prevent this happening again like Dredging the river,putting in Retention Basins installing Wetland Restoration and Riparian Buffers along riverbanks can stabilize soil, reduce erosion, and absorb floodwaters. I nearly spat my coffee out when you said you need to go a break wind at the end of the video 🤣 .

those slopes where timber is being cut need to be replanted to stabilize them. We had a large wildfire here and now we have landslides to live with. One road in and out of town - when that gets blocked, we are stuck. Learn from our experience.

We took down 12 , 45 foot trees in our garden ( they were forrest trees not garden trees). Bottom of our garden flooded one year. Trees drink alot of water. So we replanted hedges and afew trees suitable for a garden. Also got a digger in to put in 4 drainage pipes . It workes well . More trees are needed on the mountains and moorlands to prevent flooding.

They should plant a new tree for every one that they take down. It only makes sense to protect the environment and the village. It'd be cool at some point to have a little flat spot on the bank with a close view of the river. Then you could take a stool or chair there on occasion and sit and enjoy the view. But I suppose it'd have to be made to resist being washed away during floods. But it's such a blessing to have "your own piece of river," so a place to sit near and enjoy it would be great.

So glad the Homestead was OK. Was thinking when you next year won't to plant or build fencing. It might pay you to put concrete weather boards at the base of the fence, 3ft high or more. In case in the near future the river rose it would be a barrier to keep the water away from your shed. Just a thought. Would be awful to get alot of damage from water on the Homestead. You metioned.in your video about there being a lot of bricks from a wall must have collapsed.

Hi Sean. Glad the homestead wasn't harmed. Clear cutting is messing with nature! Logging companies are not obligated to clean up, they're there to haul the money, what doesn't make money they leave behind. Traditionally, they do not replant. Clean up and replanting eat into profits. Damage from Logging, and deforestation is huge here in Canada, land erosion, and dry open land from removing trees contribute to forest fires. Trees equal moist environments. Farmers needing more grazing or planting, will burn the trees to obtain Ash for fertility, which only lasts approximately 2 years, then do it again in another area. Cities clear for roads etc., if you get a ton of snow like we do, the runoff in spring can and has brought massive flooding, with it comes trees come with it, rivers get blocked, and swell, breaking the banks. If there is not adequate shoring, as in your little river, water will cause crazy damage. I wouldn't be tempted as someone has suggested in the comments to remove any of the free bricks, or cut back the bracken, looks like it's your only meager defense. I'd actually be throwing any bricks or rocks I find on the land into a wired fence to help my bank.

Hello Sean. How do you feel about starting life over at your age. I was running a good business in Liverpool. I had to move back home to Plymouth in 2021 as my Mum was very ill with Parkinson's. She passed in May this year. The area that flooded in Dunraven St has flooded many times in the past. Unfortunately it is the lowest point in the village and excess water always makes its way to that point which should in theory be the river. However houses being built at that point over 100 yrs ago now collect that water. The forestry land is owned by Natural Resources Wales who took over from the forestry commission. They also replaced the environment agency in Wales and are responsible for flood prevention, etc. The fact that trees have been felled is a red herring, the problem was a months rain fell in a day, that is why the drains became blocked and homes were flooded. Why we had a months rain in a day and why this type of weather event is occurring is the question to be answered.

Good morning Sean Your theory about the river does seem to have relevance, a lot of cut backs are made on clearing drains, course ways and dredging rivers as a way to save money, but in the end you pay the higher price of clearing up after the flooding. It's nice to hear you are taking your foot off the gas partially, it will still be busy for you none the less even if you are not at the homestead. River by the homestead but the streams were blocked which caused the trouble. The river acted as it should have.

A forested slope will interrupt the falling rain, absorb some, reduce its impact and simply slow down its surface flow. However, when the forest is removed, the falling rainfall will fully impact the exposed soil, erode it and allow it to scour the now exposed forest floor material .. which will accelerate downhill, water and debris together! In the case of your village, this muddy debris appear to have plugged-up the storm drains and caused the localized flooding. Removing trees on a slope should be done in stages over the years, preserving lateral rows of trees and their undisturbed forest floor to continue to control flooding. Then after years have passed and new undergrowth has been re-established in the cut rows, the remaining rows of trees can be harvested. To simply clear cut entire hillsides is inviting disaster! Here in Canada, I served on an advisory board with the Algonquin Forestry Authority where sustainable logging practices are well established. It sounds to me like Wales should enforce similar sustainable logging practices!

Think you must be talking about those wealthy landowners who make money from the Forestry Commission. Cutting down the trees would be termed 'forestry maintenance'. They have ingenious schemes to make money and not pay tax. Whats a bit of local flooding against all those lovely tax free gains? You may have hit the nail on the head!
