I dug out a really nice bowl blank from under my lathe. It was maple and has a lot of spalting. I turned a nine inch bowl from it. Many repairs and finished with Ack's Sanding Paste and Polish.

Outstanding video, Stephen. (As usual). I’m always so glad when I see you’ve produced another wood turning video, because I learn so much from you. Thanks for all the hard work you put into teaching us.

I turned a spalted tamarind 5" bowl yesterday. It was my first bowl and was a lot of fun. I learned a lot watching this video. Tool wise, I found turning the inside of a bowl to be a huge undertaking as everything is approaching the tools differently. It was challenging with basic chisels. Enjoyed the video. Thanks

Beautiful piece, Steve. In western Canada we don’t get much spalted maple. We do get some box elder with the red veins. I’ve done a lot of work with spalted birch. It’s common firewood out here and it spalts quickly.. well done! Always enjoy your informative commentary. I’m retired from a local fire department and just recently from a law enforcement position. I’ve always found I can ‘talk’ to wood about those experiences that went south on me and the wood never tells! More people need to be educated in the psychological value of hobbies such a wood turning. It really does soothe the mind! Bless you for what you do.

Thank you Mahendra. The next time you feel like experimenting with a log. Just leave it outside in the full weather standing on the end for a while and soon you will have very similar wood to work with. This is how I get it. Just don't wait too long or it will just rot. Hope this helps. Take care.

I like the look of any kind of spalted wood. Nature's art comes through! I really appreciate that you are showing most of your work in real time. When you watch a speeded up video, you don't get the feel of the speed of your cut. In real time you can see that you don't just rip through the cut. Even the sound of real time turning is important when you are trying to learn from watching videos. You don't get that on speeded up videos either. Thanks Stephen for another great video.

Great piece again Stephen!! I notice that you do not apply anything after the Acks polish, I was under the impression that you need a final finish after that - this is good to know. Also - I think I noted some new music in your video intro - really like the change. thanks for sharing and great to see you back on a more regular basis - I check for your new videos every day. I make sure all of my turning friends are on to your channel and even have a few friends that are not turners that now watch your channel just for the entertainment of watching the process. Thank you Dennis. I really appreciate your sticking with my channel through the dark times. LOL! I am grateful also for the shout outs to your friends. The second part of the Ack's system is the final coating of polish and it consists of carnauba wax and some oils. Nothing is needed after that.

hey Hey Steve, another beautiful job. That wood have been a fun bowl to core out. I bought a different lathe & the same coring tools you did. I know how you felt about the quality of the coring tools , I felt the exact same way but we weren't going to get our money back so I made mine work. Once I got over the learning curve the tools worked great, just keep them sharp. I love the music the tool makes when it cuts across the wood. Keep em coming!!!

Great bowl! I also like spalted wood for turning and have had a number of successes and failures. Something I learned from Kim Tippins is to take a 50:50 mix of epoxy and acetone and use it as a sort of filler or sanding sealer. It may salvage the other bowl you have. Give it a try. Works great as a finish as well. Stay safe and keep turning.

Thank you Tom. Great suggestion. I have used all kinds of stuff for stiffening the grain and have actually shown most on KZbin over the years. Never tried the epoxy and acetone but I have used Plexiglas and acetone whick worked very well also. Thank you again and take care.

Great video Stephen...👍 A few years ago before I started turning I cut down and then cut up a maple tree in the back yard that was about 4' in diameter. It was all spalted and I cut it up and split it and burned it all... 😢

I just looked at your long worth chuck video and noticed we have the same lathe. I jumped ahead 5 years to see if you upgraded. Looks like you have. Would be curious to know the pros and cons of the new lathe. Do you still use longworth chuck on new lathe? Great looking bowl. Thanks for sharing
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Lou. Glad you enjoyed this project. Yes, I do still use this longworth chuck on my new lathe. The new G0766 is very powerful, smooth running and very quiet (compared to my old G0462. The only Con I can think of is that it was backordered and took over a month to arrive. It is very reliable, meaning I have experienced no maintenance issues so far. Have not even replaced the belt. I hope this helps.

Thank you Mike. I like the Cabot sanding sealer (Oil Based) the best as long as I have time for it to cure. Otherwise I use DEFT Lacquer Sanding Sealer which also yields very good results much faster. i hope this helps.
