We know that a lack of funding means our canal system will have to reduce in some way and now we have recently found out that as continuous cruisers we will have to pay an additional surcharge each year too. Suddenly, we are forced into re-evaluating this lifestyle that we have been lucky enough to enjoy for the last 4 1/2 years and asking ourselves the question: Is Continuously Cruising on a Narrowboat Worth it Anymore? I have nowhere else to go, at 71 I’d be squeezed into some care home waiting to die, I’ve lived on my boat for 23 years and never defaulted a payment, I now struggle to stay afloat on a state pension, luxury for me is a full water tank and some gas for heating water, when I started out Calor gas was £13 a bottle it’s now £58, 25kg of coal was £9 it’s now £17, I’d rather go without food for a couple of days than let crt price me off the canal…

I completely admire your resilience and determination to stay on the canal, but I don't want to think of you going without food. I'm retired, and I cc, I get my oap plus twenty pounds. I manage OK, today is the first time I've ever paid for an over night mooring, I'm in Goole, which is where i started, waiting for diesel to open tomorrow. This is a rough area. I have a wad of cash in the bank in case of a problem. I'd hate to be struggling f as I can no longer work.

If people buy a boat to live on as cheap housing then they are mistaken, but as a cruising life style it is a bargain i think. I f the license for a CCer was 3k a year i think it is great value for what you get, could be better as in everything, but what a life you can have compared to living in a crappy town. Great video as always.

So glad your carrying on. The inland waterways is our heritage and must stay open and active. You show us that there is still some beautiful countryside and wildlife in our land. We live in racketeering times. I've just paid over double for car insurance 25yrs claim free, and its the first time I feel positively raped. Everything is way above alleged inflation rates. A case in point is Sainsbury's wheat flour. It's a yard stick. Wheat reached a peak of $1179/USD/bu March 2022 and Sainsbury's hiked their price to £1.30 from £0.67 per 1.5kg bag. Today Oct 20th 2023 wheat stands at $586 a little bit above its long term average, and Sainsbury's bag is still £1.30, Lidl £0.73 and bakery wise a better product. Sainsbury's is simply a rapacious corporate described by Which last week as the most expensive supermarket in the UK.

I think the reasoning behind the increases, is to try to generate some extra money from the boaters that use the waterways the most- which we do, but the money won't be enough to cover the loss of the government funding which means that services will have to be cut somewhere. As far as benefits of constant cruising you didn’t mention the consistent mental and physical exercise you get day to day. That seems like a significant benefit which is difficult to put a monetary value on. Good cruising 😊

Hi Vanessa, Mr M and Zephyr on this wet autumnal morning 👋👋. I guess that 'back in the day' when volunteers reopened the canals and the CRT was born, there were much fewer permanent cruisers, narrowboat owners, and people who hired a boat for their holiday? So less people to pay a fee for the upkeep of the waterways which resulted in the Government offering support. There has been a massive increase in the numbers of boats traversing the waterways and people opting for this change of lifestyle - especially since Covid entered our lives - so maybe with so many now paying a fee to maintain locks, fix breaches, oversee moorings, etc the Government no longer feel the need to supplement the CRT any longer? I guess it's back to 'swings and roundabouts' as living statically on land has seen increases in Council Tax and less money locally to fill potholes etc. Given the choice, your decision to stay cruising the waterways is, both mentally and physically, the best one to take. It's tragic the funding being lost by CRT, canals provide a place for flora & fauna to thrive as well as homes, holidays, escape from humdrum life etc for humans. Glad you're getting on OK with the deodorant, I've used it for years & have saved a few bob & not a single container to have to recycle or dispose of in all that time. 🦋🌱

It is disheartening to see everyone caught in the grips of this runaway inflation Vanessa. It does seem like the CRT is doing everything possible to raise their fees as slowly and incrementally as they can. I know a lot of people complain about the job they do but they have at best, a monumental task at hand maintaining canals, lock gates and various other infrastructure on a monumental level. To me as an American, the license fee seems quite reasonable. I'm glad to see that you Zeph and the mysterious Mr. M are going to tough it out and enjoy all the nature that England has to offer. I wish you all well in the upcoming Winter months and may God Bless your New Year.

Michael, you are so right. I would never complain about the work of CRT. I can't imagine how difficult the job of maintaining it all is. I hope my vlog doesn't come across as a moan about them as that was not my intention at all; I just wanted to raise the facts. The licence fee will still be, like you say cheaper than a mortgage or rent plus bills, but it is an increase that the poorest on the system will really struggle to pay and they still have to keep moving their boat and find service points to empty rubbish, toilets and find water etc... I hope that they will be given the support that they need. The annual fee for a rail ticket is still more than the waterway fee and has none of the benefits you mentioned .As Hemel Pike said in The Bargee - “the only way to get me off the canals is to fill them in”😊

As all the waterways of the Country are an important support system for the nature that surrounds it, lives in it and upon it and a place to live upon by Boaters. I feel that yourself Vanessa are now an intricate part of the English waterways. You always show it at it's best, no matter the weather, you show your viewers the plants, the amazing wildlife and pass on nuggets of it's history. It seems perverse that when the government is criticised for lack of housing, is trying to push pollution reduction and sustainable living, they cut the funding to the canal system. Are there any figures published of the financial position of canal dwellers. When I was on the edge of starving, in the 70s, a boat that cost less than a couple of thousand pounds, floated, didn't leak too much and had a working engine, was my only option of a home. Then I got a new job that pinned me to one place, and found a caravan instead.

You have really lived through tough times and you are proof of how having the option of a boat as a home can be vital. Hello my lovely. Yes. I've read about the cut backs in canal maintenance and i guess it will affect most boaters, continuous or otherwise. The governments are very good setting up schemes to promote leisure activities, but then they stop the funding, leaving local authorities to carry the cost. i'm sure you will manage to carry on. I certainly hope so. KZbin would be very empty without you. But if you lived on land, costs will still rise. Good luck to you all xx

CRT really need to start going after all the unlicensed boats on the system. So many get away with paying nothing and if they’ve not got a license they haven’t got insurance and probably not a BSS.

The Green Elf Cups have a glorious color and the coral slime so delicate, feeding insects(how do you know so much?). It is all to make you give up your freedom and lifestyle. In order to bring in smart cities and surveillance. It is happening to any activities that promote independence and alternative lifestyles. Wild camping, even parking in places overnight is no longer permitted in many places. Hang on to this freedom as much as you can.

I think you are correct in continuing. If you come ashore you will be faced with the same increase in expenses and a housing market that leaves experienced and relatively monied tenants struggling to find premises. If canal costs are rising because of reduced local authority support it is symptomatic of reductions they are making elsewhere. We are all struggling and making economies. I disposed of a small and not overly valuable auto home because the restrictions and frankly bad behaviour of many users are making them less welcome and services more expensive. I admit I miss the freedom of trips but I find much joy in the countryside I live in. Enjoy your freedom.

For this vlog I think the drawing at the end should actually be YOU with all the rays of autumn sunshine bathing you, as it does for most of the time you are talking - your colours perfectly matching the nature around you like a goddess! ps the deodorant seems a bit like the new Pit Putty types and I've been using their fragrance free very successfully some years now - if yours works without leaving any coconut oil stains on your clothes then it will be interesting to know, though the bought one does tend to last a lot of months ....

great that your not giving up, but i think many other factors may come into play, as more wet weather and global warming cause more flooding, with droughts and low water in our hotter summers. this makes weed more of a problem too. With less water , elsan, pump out and re-cycling points serviceable and lastly old locks, not getting the maintenance with higher volume of cruisers using them, it all seems to be against boaters, maybe a plan to stop continous cruisers who really only stay around one area and not properly moving along the watreways, as intended. Sorry its long, but so mjuch change coming.

Hi Tessa, you raise so many interesting points here and there are many things to consider.I believe that our waterway system could be used more effectively to generate green electricity like putting hydropumps at every lock and weir; humanure waste bins at every service point to reduce the issues at pumpouts and elsans and cut the cost of fixing and running them; collecting pennywort, pondweed and azolla from the water and then recycling it to companies to make HVO...I could go on but the waterways have so much possibility. I've learnt so much about nature from you - in fact, something new most videos. The birds and that beautiful fox really made my day. A wonderfu; cruise superby photographed by you. I do understand that the CRT are having their goverment funding reduced by millions of pounds over the next 5 years, and that your costs bring a continuous cruiser are going to increase. Tighening your belt and working harder may be the obvious thing to do. However, increasing the cost to use the canal system whilst at the same time reducing the availability of useable waterways is rediculous.

Vanessa I could not see you stuck in a house, you would go stir - crazy. Everyone is finding it hard and the money is being stretched, that is why I don't buy you coffees, every cent counts sigh but no worries still making ends meet. Buying your journal was my Christmas present to myself =-) Just thinking to lessen the carbon foot print further have you thought of composting toilet, possibly too expensive but it would probably be less worrying to get to pumpout stations. I have recently bought a compost toilet and I will do a vlog about it, but as it is relatively new, I wanted to see how it works out before discussing it in detail. It is so much better though and I think that it could solve a lot of problems with blocked elsans and broken pumpouts if the CRT added a compost bin at each waste point. Thanks for a great video - as always. Regarding the deodorant - I haven't bought any for years but I bypass a lot of your steps. I simply shake a little bicarbonate of soda onto a damp cloth and apply. Works wonderfully well. The big hike in the cost of living as a continuous cruiser is going to force some people off the canals, thus reducing the income for the CRT. In turn, this will mean fewer services and care for the canals, locks and so on. Downward spiral. I really hope that pressure can be brought on the "powers that be" that make these decisions without a thought for the results to people's lives or to flora and fauna. This is one of those discussions that can go on forever!

I saw David John's video on the canal funding issue. Sorry the boaters will be bearing the brunt of it, making up the cost. I would have to believe it's worth it to continue, that the benefits far out weigh the cost increase. Hopefully, you and Mr. will find a way to cope with the rising costs. Quite the day for spotting fungi! The blue elf caps were adorable and amazing! I can see them being used as a natural color dye. Very interested to hear more long term how the natural deodorant is working. I recall Paul McCartney saying in an interview that he was convinced there was a strong correlation between the store bought stuff and incidence of non familial breast cancer in women. Not sure on the facts there. His lovely wife Linda lost her battle there. Very sad. Anyway, thanks for the lovely video! Always look forward to them so much.

Hi, I've been using the deodorant for years, different from the run of the mill stuff in the shops but works extremely well. You soon get used to how much you need to use - very little - & to allow it to be absorbed by your skin before dressing so you don't spoil your clothes, same as any deodorant I suppose. Been so long since I bought any I've forgotten!

I travelled to London on the train this week to attend the oil protest and I took some with me in a little tub as it is was really humid on the trains and I reapplied it in the toilet. Having watched your channel and many other boat vloggers over the last 5 or 6 years, it seems that everyone reaches a point when they start to question whether it's doing it for them anymore. I suppose it's a combination of lots of things, like the costs, but also health issues, work issues, family, and just maybe missing the convenience of a house. Winter always seems quite trying. But then there are a couple of vloggers out there, like Phil Ball who's been on the canals now over 30 years. That's dedication!

You're correctly highlighting the changes that are due to be implemented, which creates additional costs. However to put it into prospective, in comparison to housing situation, even with the increases, the cost of narrowboat living still seems relatively cheap. Landlords in the north of England are starting to charge over £500 per month just to rent a room in a shared house. To rent an average semi detached in a decent area will cost between £800 - £1000 per month. Then theres the massive increase in energy costs and the council tax charge. In 2024, I don't know how the average singleton can afford to live alone, unless they have jobs that pay well above the national average. Thats probably why theres a large percentage of the younger generation still living with their parents well into their 30's. I don't own a narrowboat, but I've watched a few videos from KZbinrs and including ones that broke down their living costs. So due to the relaxed lifestyle and reduced living costs, I'm trying to persuade my partner into making this change.

It’s not like you to be a negative Nelly , Vanessa! I think, looking at what’s happening already, that the C&RT will use more volunteers to do jobs that are currently done by contractors, freeing up money to use on essentials like dredging and lock repairs, the sort of jobs that can’t be done by volunteers. You’ve been on the Chesterfield Canal and probably seen the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s work boat, Python. Crewed totally by volunteers it travels the length of the canal, in sections, clearing out by washes, tidying up tow paths, cutting back overhanging trees, weeding lock gates and dragging obstacles out of the water. This is probably something that you’ll see more of on other waterways. I know there’s a trial going on (sorry, can’t remember where) which uses a gang of volunteers to trim the tow paths instead of using contractors. It’s doable if we all play our part.

The waterways are so regulated! Maybe a consideration would be to get a nice yacht or motor sailor and cruise the coast. A different skill set to learn. A wider scope of destinations, less regulated, free anchorages, the biggest cost would be maintaining the boat, but good infrastructure exists.

I own a flat, no mortgage, but the service charge is £2500 then there's the ground rent of £450, plus council tax £1100. If i was ten years younger I'd move onto the canals as, even after buying a boat id still be financially secure. However, at sixty nine, the thought of single handing a boat through locks and bridges fills me with dread.

I've had to STOP using under-arm deoderants lately (Aerosole & Roll-On) as they cause uncontrollable itching - I keep asking my daughters if I smell !! - Because apparently, unless it's REALLY BAD! - We can't smell our OWN body odour - Who Knew? .... So I shall be trying out that recipe - Even though My daughters say I don't STINK!! - They might be sparing my embarrassment 🤨 .... As for Your Lifestyle ... 'The War On Motorists' is very REAL as you no doubt realise, and more people are giving up their Van-Life Lifestyle as a result .... The 'Powers-That-Be' are also in pursuit of Boat-Lifers now, as they want everyone to be under surveillance in the Modern 'New-world' that we're ALL being forced! to accept .... Hi Pete, if you have suffered with itching, then you might be better off adding less bicarb and more arrowroot to this recipe, just in case it irritates you. You can also add essential oils to make the deodorant smell stronger if you want. Annie, might have some advice to add to this? She gave me the recipe and so she knows more about the ingredients than I do. I will admit, since using this, I keep checking if I smell and asking whoever I am with at the time and so far so good, but they might be being polite- like you said! Just a note about the DIY deodorant, I would cut back on the amount of baking soda. It can be a little harsh. I have been using and making my own deodorant, facial moisturizer, hand and body lotion as well as soap for over 5 years. Love your great videos especially the flora and fauna.

@@themindfulnarrowboat They have. It's called a nuclear power station. CO2 doesn't cause global warming. It's water vapour. That's why a clear cloudless winter's night is colder than a cloudy or rainy one. It's doubly frustrating people are conned by the govt. which has loads of money to spend on wars and defence, but nothing on our wonderful canal network.

Since this episode is largely about how to finance this lifestyle, did I see an episode where you were selling some of your poems and drawings bookletss?, because I would love to purchase some but cant see information on how to..... At 67, I too am about to go full time river boating in Australia because I cant afford a house, and I love tbe water and the nature around it. Your booklets would be a lovely companion to my future library. I love your vlogs.... keep on crusing!!

Over many years successive governments have let the canal system rot away, how many times have local people had to do it themselves to keep their canal open, the crt need billions over the years to keep it open so sadly price increases will have to happen 😢
