One thing I always do and have done for years is if I need something (a new shirt or dress for an event, you want a different piece of art or just really anything) I always check the thrift store first. More times than not I can find what I need there and not have to pay full price. Sometimes I don’t find it the first time, so I’ll go back over and over looking for it. Example: My paper towel holder broke that I had had for over 16 years. I kept checking the thrift store, because I didn’t want to pay full price at the store for it. It took a few months, but when I found a wooden one at the thrift store for $1 I felt like a kid at Christmas time. 😁

Except potatoes, so, if you’re making a casserole & want to freeze it, pull out all the potatoes and after thawing, add fresh potatoes that you’ve cooked up in a frying pan with a little butter asa well as oil, your choice of oil-- but don’t forget the butter. Then you can put the newly cooked potatoes in your casserole!

I agree with the cheap entertainment… We invested in a metal detector and guess what it’s paid off for itself… we go for walks at parks and beach and have fun just getting the exercise just walking bending digging … it’s fun and we’ve found some cute things like a metal die cast car a ring coins and coins and some pull tabs and pop bottle covers and we clean up the beach but enjoy being kids in our late fifties… wish I had one when I was 7 …. Metal detectors are a great investment in exercise and patience…😊😊😊

I have a beautiful, every stitch done by hand bed size quilt made by my husbands 90 year old Gramma 61 years ago. She slept on the couch because the only room for her quilting frame was over her bed. When i daughter was getting rid of her daughter's baby clothes, I snuck some special ones out. When she was 10 I made a wallhanging out of squares very much like yours and then hand stitched her baby clothes to the quilt so if she has a little girl someday she can use some just for fun. I did socks, special onsies, cap, sweaters, whatever I thought would have meaning. Both mom and daughter were delighted and surprised and she has it hung in her room. I enjoy anything you do!

Love this thought process, I too think, “how did they do it during the Great Depression?” I make my own laundry detergent, stain remover, deodorant, toothpaste, detangler for my daughter, face toner. Use old towels in the dryer instead of dryer sheets. No longer run the heater on the dishwasher just let them drip dry overnight. Make my own coffee at home. I buy large containers of castille soap for body wash which can be diluted. I remember my grandma never bought trash bags, she’d use the plastic grocery bags and wash and trim down the trash that went inside. She didn’t even have a wastebasket, she used a brown paper bag from the grocery store. She washed and reused ziplocks and tin foil. My grandpa boiled tap water. My grandma used Bobby pins to squeeze out every drop of toothpaste. She definitely air dried her clothes after wearing them and would wear them a few times before washing. I think they only ever bought 1 TV for the living room and refused the gift of a new TV. They had a summer garden. They would line the inside of their car with towels to avoid wear and tear.

My parents grew up during depression. Saving was a way of daily life for them. We cut off tops, of toothpaste,baked goods from scratch, learned how to repair our own clothes, when there was no meat, my grandma 😮ate onion sandwiches as a meatless meals. Quilts were made out of old clothes, old coats . Hand me down clothes between children. Neighbors helped each other I keeping house repaired , my parents were never in debt, we reused tin foil, we also wash and dry plastic bags.we did not have a c in the summer, always turn off lights, be thankful for what God has given you., be peaceful with out having to go out and spend money.

Glad your video came thru Google feed. Yes for newsletter! Thank you!!My grandma had a wringer washer and did not wash clothes everyday or every week. So I took her wisdom into practice. I wash my clothes about every two weeks. I wear clothes that fit(light, dark or white) my laundry to do. I work at home which saves on my clothes and money not buying clothes so often. Example: I wear dark to make a full load of darks and same with lights and white. Never put my church clothes in dryer. Dry on hanger and ready to hang in closet when dry.

Something that my family learned to do when our kids were in college to save on books is to utilize the university or college library that is already included in the price of tuition. We learned that university and college libraries allowed students to check out books for a minimum of 30 days and can renew books two times which adds up to one whole quarter. Not all the books my children needed were available but many were and this saved us tons over the course of their college time. Also renting books instead of purchasing them made it possible for us to put three children through college

Good tips Talk to your kids about money When they are old enough to do chores earn allowance They may have wants but show them how quickly money dissappear get them to save up kids can learn that they don't need a toy or treat every trip to the store Sometimes when they have to wait they may change their minds about that toy 2. Lots of men aren't interested in meatless but grandma knew how to buy budget meat burger, stew soup bones things that can be stretched into stews soups casseroles to stretch the meat budget And lots were full of vegetables and delicious ingredients even a few beans etc in that homemade soup stews etc 3. A stocked pantry is excellent There are ingredients staples that go into lots of recipes 4. Amazing you can grow a few vegetables in large pots in the backyard or on a balcony You can find lots of ideas for this They are easy to grow 5.Funny how so many people when they track their spending they are shocked Grabbing that coffee at the drive through with a breakfast sandwich can add up Keep a notebook and write down the daily spending Make your own coffee in a go cup And a homemade muffin Can save a few hundred dollars a month Yes really you will be surprised Great video lots of common sense Take care ❤️ 😊

Quilting and sewing clothes is no longer a frugal practice. That’s because material, sewing supplies cost so much today that you can buy a blanket for much cheaper. It is a lovely thing to do to pass on to someone as an heirloom. The same goes with crochet or knitted items, also no longer frugal things due to the cost of materials. However, what is frugal is refashioning your own clothes, or refashioning a clothing item bought in expensively on the secondary market. There are loads of videos on you tube on refashioning clothes. It’s worth it to check them out.

But they could be frugal, if you bought yarn and fabric from thrift stores. There's a KZbin quilter who makes her quilts out of thrifted men's cotton shirts (Ladybird quilts,I think.)

Quilting and sewing can be frugal. Use the same pattern multiple times with different fabrics. If you quilt using material from old clothes you are not wasting money buying fabric and are reusing what you already have. It's true that cheap clothes can be bought at Walmart but you may not always find exactly what you are looking for.
@sallyprzybil2404
@sallyprzybil2404 12 күн бұрын
@@carolmckellar2479 I think one has to be careful about the costs. Patterns are over $15.00 each. When I started sewing as a teen a pattern was 75 cents. There are far less places to buy material and costs per yard has gone up. Also take into account the cost of your time in making an outfit. Last job I had I was making $30 per hour so for me, doing some overtime was a better way to have more money. I’m not saying sewing some of your own clothes isn’t a good hobby, it is a good hobby, it’s not really frugal. However, refashioning, or redesigning some of the clothes you already have instead of buying something new is a frugal practice. There are a lot of great videos on You Tube on how to do that. Some of them show amazing transformations of outfits. I did not say anything about buying clothes at Walmart.

Good morning! Our most treasured items are the handmade quilts handed down to us- priceless! Something I've noticed is that many people don't know how to put together different ingredients they already have on hand and make a meal out of it or how how to stretch a meal. If you're using a low-wattage LED modern bulb, it will take more energy to turn it off and on again so nowadays it is cheaper to leave it on once it's on. This gets pointed out around "Earth hour" being bad for the Earth, but every day you'll save money by only turning on the lights you know you'll need and leaving them on until bed.

Stop wasting money on dryer sheets and purchase dryer balls. You can use essential oils if you like a scent.❤

Save that movie rental fee and borrow a movie for free from your local library. 'Rag rugs' were popular in the past and can be a fun project.

❤i love your approach to money. It makes perfect sense especially under the current world circumstances. I have always done things your way but every time I see your show i learn more than a few things! And thrift is only one payback....the other is to our precious environment. Landfills teem with stuff full of chemicals that leach into our air, soil and water, ultimately poisoning us and our future generations....what an avoidable tragedy! Please keep up your excellent work.We need your great ideas!

Before grocery shopping (on line or in person), determine what you actually need by looking through your pantry. Then, create a shopping list.

Grandma here. When you pay your mortgage, always pay some extra towards the principle. This helps you pay off your mortgage earlier which is essential for retirement.

I wash dishes by hand in two basins of water - one warm and sudsy, the other just clear cold water. I let the dishes drip dry on a towel on the counter. I need to bring in a bucket to dump the basins into afterward though - we can use that water to flush the toilet or water the garden. I plan on putting up the clothesline this year and using it instead of the dryer as much as the weather allows. I've been making my own laundry soap, and would love to learn how to make my own deodorant and toothpaste/mouth rinse. I tried one recipe for toothpaste that may have been remineralizing for tooth enamel, but it was salty, gritty and grainy - absolutely made me want to throw up every time I brushed my teeth. I could always just use baking soda and water, though some people say that's too abrasive. I live where it gets extremely hot and humid in the summertime, not sure DIY deodorant is going to get the job done as far as keeping me from smelling horrible after working in the garden (or doing anything outside really), but I'm willing to try it. I hate feeling swampy, but have to admit that there is something wrong about smearing antiperspirant on so we don't sweat when it's a hundred degrees out. Of course we're going to sweat - it's how the body tries to cool itself. If you aren't sweating in such heat it's a symptom of heat stroke!

Thank you for sharing tip on water. I do the same thing. I catch the cold water until the hot water. This water is used to flush toilet, and water my houseplants. I have told others about flushing toilet and the looks they give me.😮 My look is just keep paying a high water bill and letting execs at utility companies receive big bonuses. Thank you again. It’s good to know someone else does same or similar to what you do.

@@lizmullins6338 Using a bucket of saved water to flush the toilet is a bit unconventional, but we've done it before in the winter when we've shut the water off to keep the pipes from freezing and breaking. When you are working with stored water you really have to conserve every drop and it's not a huge step to realizing how much we waste every day when we don't have to think about it.
