The 17 Mountain Strike Corps, raised in 2014 and headquartered at Panagarh in West Bengal has recently been allocated to the Indian Army’s Eastern Command instead of the dual role it was envisaged for initially. Revealing that it is now fully operational with all its combat and combat support units are fully integrated, Eastern Army Commander Lt Gen Manoj Pande told Editor-in-Chief Nitin A. Gokhale that the strike corps provides both deterrence as well as an offensive capability to the Eastern Command against China. Lt gen Pande spoke at length about many other changes and improvements that are currently underway along the LAC to provide a power-packed punch in the East.

Lt. Gen. Manoj Pandey sir was talking about developing "Dual Use Infrastructure." From that perspective, I would like to suggest 5 Mega Infrastructure projects which can boost both Military Transportation & Industrial operations in the North East- 1. North East Dedicated Freight Corridor (Patna- Silliguri- Guhawati). At Patna it will connect Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor which is being constructed from Ludhiana to Dankuni near Kolkata. As we all know that trains running on DFC are capable of pulling over 10,000 tonnes worth goods & can run at around 100 kmph. So these DFC can give a huge boost to our Military Transportation of equipment capability as well as give boost to Industries in the region due to significantly easing logistics, thus making it favourable for industries. In future the DFC if possible can be further extended uptill Dibrugarh to achieve last mile connectivity. 2. Brahmaputra Expressway. I guess this expressway should be turned into a reality. Again it will not only boost the Industrial operations in the area but enable travel of Military Convoys much faster due to it's Access Controlled feature. It will connect Dhubri with Sadia. In future this same Expressway can be extended uptill proposed Silliguri Ring Road. Infact NH 27 can be converted into a Brownfield Access Controlled Expressway if possible to save additional costs. 3. I had once estimated the number of Tunnels which might be required under River Brahmaputra in order to ensure better year round connectivity of North & South Assam as well Arunachal further North with rest of North Eastern States. I personally felt that we need to have a Bridge or Tunnel at every 50 kms distance, starting from Dhubri uptill Sadia. The estimated numbers was 4 Twin Lane Tunnels spread out equidistantally over River Brahmaputra passing throughout the length of Assam & rest would be bridges. Fortunately 1 Twin Lane Tunnel has been approved in Numaligarh- Gohpur. So this leaves us with 3 more Twin lane Tunnels spread equidistantally. 1 in East part of Assam, 1 in more in Central Assam (apart from Gohpur) & 1 in Western part of Assam would ensure all round military transportation just incase Bridges come under attack. A similar project in terms of Multiple Bridges providing connectivity is being implemented in Bihar where a number of Bridges are being built over River Ganga to enhance North-South Bihar Connectivity. So a similar project needs to be planned over River Brahmaputra in Assam as well to enhance North-South Assam connectivity. The earlier listed Brahmaputra Expressway will connect all these Bridges & Tunnels with each other like a horizontal ladder. This would make the whole route a Super Expressway area. 4. Developing Pasighat & Tezu as proper Airbase cum Civilian Airports. It would include developing/upgrading existing Civilian terminal as well as developing Shelters to station 1 Sq. of Aircrafts at each base. Something similar to what has been done with Leh Airport. 5. By far the most important would be the Arunachal Frontier Highway which will not only help our troops maintain surveillance & easily help them travel till border posts but also allow Model Border Villages Plan to be implemented successfully as main concern for people living in Border villages would be connectivity which once this highway get's constructed would be established. I guess the deadline to achieve all these Infrastructure projects should be kept as 2030. By 2030, proper infrastructure should be in place to gain parity with Chinese in terms of Infrastructure connectivity.

A frank interview with a theatre commander is a rarity. Nitin Gokhale deserves to be congratulated for making this happen. Civilian population seldom has a chance to view and hear on op preparedness of the services. Gen Pande’s exposition on the Mountain corps and it’s preparedness is of great significance. And a confidence building measure for all Indians. Nitin and his technical video team deserves thanks for clarity and production.

We should plan to raise 6 Strike Corps in total within the next 5-6 years:- 1. 1 Mountain Strike Corp. under futurustic Eastern Theatre Command (N.E & West Bengal) 2. 2 Mountain Strike Corps. under Northern Theatre Command (J&K, Ladakh, H.P, UTT & Haryana) 3. 2 Plains Strike Corps under Western Theatre Command (Punjab, Rajasthan, Gujarat) 4. 1 Maritime Strike Corp. under Maritime Command (Induan Ocean Region) We have 14-15 Corps. in total currently. So we can transform 6 Corps. into Strike Corps. so that we become slightly more assertive against both the enemies. Remaining 8 Corps. can play the defensive role to defend the borders. All 14-15 Corps. can be divided amongst various land based theatres. Size & Equipment of 6 Strike Corps would ofcourse differ according to Terrain, Conditions etc. These Strike Corps. can be further divided into Integrated Battle Groups (IBG) which can be responsible for implementing Cold Start Doctrine. It would give us an edge over our adversaries.

Nitin Ji thanks for the wonderful interview with a mist articulate Gen Pandey. He spoke so lucidly giving an absolutely clear situation without revealing any vital information that would benefit our enemies. I follow your videos regularly and at times I am annoyed and criticise you for revealing too much that would benefit our adversaries. You must curb that journalistic penchant. The General spoke so well in saying that the army is not just buoynet charging soldiers, but it is based of highly organised military science. One thing that caught by ear is that tunnelling to store material etc. This has been my favourite thought that using tunnelling machines we should create lot of tunnels to store and protect our men and material, heavy artillery from satellite surveillance massive air and missile attack. During the congress rule the politicians did not have any grasp on military matters and have not developed infrastructure due,to neglect budget allocation and will and fear that China would be angered. Partly also for the reason that China, I believe, has bribed our politicians to keep the North-east underdeveloped. Anyway he story is different now. Lastly Nitin Ji another complaint of mine on you is you probably never read ornhas contempt for comments as you feel your job is over after filling the air. You must realise your videos are intended of people and therefore some of their comments may have relevance. Mutually any one could have a valid point or even wrong. In this video there are 164 comments now and within 20 min I can sort out salient points that needs clarification from you. Regards.

Gen Pandey continues a great tradition of Eastern Army Commanders like Gen Manekshaw and Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Aurora. Tawang and Kameng Sector come under the Eastern Command. In '62 we had no Mountain Strike Corps. XVII Corps bared its fangs in eastern Ladakh when one of its divisions helped take the Kailash Range and turned the tables on China at Pangong Tso. Nitin needs to explain to this generation of Indians as to why the Henderson Brooks Bhagat Report that inquired into the nature and causes of the 1962 War is still kept classified. Indian military scholars and historians need access to this document most of which was actually drafted by the brilliant Gen Preminder Singh Bhagat, India's only general to have been awarded a Victoria Cross. It is kept suppressed by our Official Secrets Act of 1928 and this colonial anachronism does not enable us to learn anything from our own history.

The best way to tackle China is aiming to be global military and nuclear superpower and not regional. The person aiming to defend himself can only defend with some losses and offensive person will always have 0 or more gain but defensive person will have 0 or more loss.

Although there is no scope of withdrawal like in Afghanistan, strategy must be in place for safety reasons to destroy the war machine before it falls into hands of PLA. It is well known that PLA is numerically and logistically and technology is more advanced over long period of 1962 in addition to land logistics and development of social, human and technolect above all nearly level area on the side of China in depth for hundred miles and less developed unlike on India side.
