This and Greg's Rough Stuff episode are the two best podcasts that Small Beans has done.

Still can't believe Greg isn't a way bigger actor by now. Dude should be on tv and movies.

Hi, just wanted to say that I come back and listen to this about once a month. It's hilarious. Easily my favorite podcast that you guys have done. You need to bring Greg back.

I remember a fun way to play oddjob. Slappers only, one oddjob, three jaws. Switch controllers when oddjob dies. It was more fun than it sounds.

I beg Small Beans from the depths of my heart to include Sir Burke in future works, if he is available and willing. The juxtaposition and diametric brilliance of the short-lived series "Escort Mission" was beyond compare; a diamond of creative talent. That immense sense is felt once again here. I say without doubt I have listened to this podcast at least 30 times for its comedic value. You at Small Beans are so naturally inclined to the art that you can seemingly make sketches on the fly, almost without thought, and have me in stitches. Long Live Small Beans.

I grew up with online MP, tried a LAN party of HALO:CE in 2010's at college, best gaming experience ever, just 18 people in an unused classroom, in one match. Best feeling ever.

55:44 I give a shit about Perfect Dark! I didn't have a 64 but my friend did. We played GoldenEye all the time, then he got Perfect Dark and those sims changed the game. Then we could alternate between pvp and teaming up to take on a bunch of higher level sims and see who could get the most kills. Or if someone playing with us wasn't very good we could give them sims to balance things out. Also had great music for the main menu.

the answer as to why there's so many video games about shooting people is that games require conflict. Chris Crawford in the first edition of his book "The Art of Computer Game Design" (www.digitpress.com/library/books/book_art_of_computer_game_design.pdf) argues that the distinguishing characteristic of a game from a puzzle or a toy is conflict. Using that as our basis for understanding why so many games use violence, we can argue that violence is the easiest form of conflict to design a game around, and to quickly teach the mechanics to the player. I'd argue that conflict can come from any dimension of the game, such as narrative. If there is a lose state, then it's a game. For example, Portal is a classic puzzle game whose primary conflict comes from the real danger of the world, but more importantly, from the narrative. Most of the game is about advancing through the facility, being forced to solve puzzles by GLaDOS, and there are times when the player has to solve a puzzle or they die.

I LOVED Perfect Dark, single player and couch multiplayer, maybe played that even more than GoldenEye, but I struggle to find other people who care at all about it lol. Really didn't get the recognition, but there was such a huge FPS boom around that time that it sort of got eclipsed.
@azarinevil5 жыл бұрын
I remember we used to use Oddjob and Jaws as a buff/debuff system for those of us who got too good. I out paced most of my friends in skill level (I was the guy who owned the system we all played on, I'd be ashamed if I wasn't that guy LOL) so I would agree to let noobs play oddjob, had to pick Jaws, and then do battle with the worst weapon options only... just to keep everyone enjoying the game while they got better. I loved throwing knives but it feels sad to beat all your friends, who have machine guns and mines , by running circles around them and throwing knives at their heads after awhile.

Temple, license to kill, remote mines (throw the mine and in mid air press A and B to blow it up in someone's face) or grenade launchers. Some of the most fun in my entire life. Dibs on Siberian Special Forces! Mario Kart needs to be added to the N64 top list. TimeSplitters 2 Multiplayer - Monkey Mode!!!!

there was a really cool remake on 360/wii/ps3 with updated levels, online multiplayer, and playing with the canon by making daniel craig voice bond and provide the likeness. they modernized the storyline as well.. you may mention this later, but im an hour in and you havent mentioned it

Escort mission was great Burke is awesome! We had Perfect Dark. It was very popular In my part of Canada. Better game by far! You had better guns, the best Golden Eye levels and you could stick mines to people!!!!!! Also they made The World is not Enough for n64. Don't know how well it did. My opinion, Perfect Dark is the best.
@azarinevil5 жыл бұрын
World is not Enough tanked.. it was EA made garbage. Perfect Dark was clearly the greatest FPS on 64, so good it is now been updated for Xbox. Graphics still suck, but game play feels smoother than the 64 potato days. Also a Canadian and it was a huge gaming force here too, once it came out Goldeneye was abandoned.. couldn't even play it as it felt so slow.

This was a really fun episode. Greg needs to host something with Michael. Anything at all really. One big correction though is that Goldeneye is no where close to the first fps with stealth. The Wolfenstein games from the 80’s had more and better stealth components like wearing enemy guard uniforms and stealth knife kills. But stealth was a good addition to Goldeneye for sure.

The sniper rifle in this game was a huge draw for me. It's the first game I can remember that had a rifle with a scope on it and a tower to hang out in...

Internet tells me that the Klobb is based on the Skorpion vz. 61. It's good for a machine pistol, but machine pistols have a fairly narrow use case: very close quarters. It's good for vehicle drivers and secret service types. I only played Goldeneye a few times as a kid -- how'd the klobb perform in the game?

what the hell is with the subliminal ass picture of Africa on the right hand side of the box with the controllers imposed over it and the rumble pack seemingly sticking out of it? Africa doesn't feature at all in either media form and I never noticed that until now. oh and keep up the great content
@HelloTardis5 жыл бұрын
I guess (only guess) they wanted to make is spy-ish, so they wanted to add some map imagery to the cover, and maybe Africa was the best shape to fit into that small fifth of the artwork. It barely fits as it is. Just a guess.

Perfect Dark's problem: It was second. It wasnt groundbreaking...but the game itself is much better than Goldeneye...PD had AI so you could play 'multiplayer' by yourself. Yes please review it!! The World Is Not Enough was the video game sequel to Goldeneye...it was barely better in singleplayer and nothing compared to goldeneye in multiplayer. Ah yes...the Klobber Slobber!
@azarinevil5 жыл бұрын
Well technically Perfect Dark was the sequel to Goldeneye.. just in terms of the original game studio. They gave EA the license for World is Not Enough, but it was clear that Rare was expecting to get that license by the engine improvements. They gave us Perfect Dark because they knew it was something we wanted badly and would sell well.

I don't understand why you're talking about video games like they're only murder simulators. By far the games I've sunk the most time into are, in order: the NHL series, Madden, and NBA (although I have to cheat here since I used to play NBA Live until they quit then switched to 2k).

I really, really don't understand why this narrative that the N64 controller wasn't suited to FPSs keeps getting pushed; did nobody play Turok? I maintain that I've yet to play an FPS on console that controlled better than Turok on N64 did with the C-buttons controlling movement (including strafing) so that the joystick allowed for aiming. (Also, still the best FPS on a console ever. Goldeneye is overrated.)
