I started dealing with hormonal acne after going off of birth control at 25. I never had acne in my teens, so I did all kinds of research. I tried salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, topical antibiotics, etc. and the acne persisted. A few months ago I saw one of Dr. Dray's videos about azelaic acid. My real life dermatologist never mentioned this as a recommended treatment, but I was desperate for clear skin, so I purchased The Ordinary's OTC azelaic acid cream and it has literally changed my life. I went from having new breakouts every single day to not having a single blemish for 3 months straight. If you are struggling with what you believe is hormonal acne, you MUST try this stuff. It's super affordable as well.

Azelaic Acid changed the game!!! I'm only using the Ordinary's 10% suspension for now and it showed improvement for acne SO QUICKLY. I've had oily skin causing blackheads and closed comedones and some acne for 15 years. Benzoyl peroxide doesn't work for me. I can't use a retinol at this time due to pregnancy and breastfeeding. Salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids haven't been doing enough. Azelaic Acid had results after day TWO!!

I use naturium azelaic acid every morning and its been a game changer! On top of the acid I layer ordinary squalane oil, pacifica barrier cream, then cerave tinted spf 30. The azelaic acid helps with the peeling of tret (I use .05% at night) and seems to be helping my rosacea too. I find it to be gentle but effective for sloughing off dead skin without compromising your skin. If any other rosacea sufferers are struggling to find a moisturizer that doesnt burn like hell and cause a flare the pacifica barrier cream might be worth trying, its the only one I've found for me.. Not sure if im layering everything right but the "adapting phase" struggle is real w tret 😄. Thank you Azalaic Acid and thank you Dr. Dray for all the great information as always!! ❤

2 years of using TO azelaic acid didn’t help my rosacea - but it might have been a damaged skin barrier as the culprit. Following Dr. Dray’s advice of a simple skincare routine helped tremendously! I switched to Paula’s Choice azelaic acid, which was a little less irritating but then was put on low dose tretinoin so I don’t often use my Paula’s Choice product and the rosacea is pretty minimal now.❣️👍🎉

Be sure to check with your derm and insurance before buying prescription azeleic acid. It was going to cost almost $300 through my insurance. When I discussed that with my derm she referred me to a local compounding pharmacy where I pay $36 out of pocket. My insurance plan pharmacy would only provide two brand name options and no generics. Since this something I expect to use for an extended time I would have opted for an OTC before spending that much.

Dr. Dray can you please do a video on nickel allergy safe products. Over 15 million Americans have at least a contact allergy to nickel. Often those people also are allergic to cobalt. I myself have SNAS (systemic nickel allergy syndrome) I even have to be on a low nickel and low cobalt diet. It is hellish! For some reason, the Ecco-Verde site no longer sells sunscreens to USA customers I have to order all my cosmetic and personal care products from Ecco-Verde which is a European site. Thankfully in Italy they have certification for nickel and cobalt levels in products. Otherwise it’s IMPOSSIBLE to know how much is in there if you don’t test. It can be INSIDE any plant or mineral based products. So you won’t see the words “nickel” or “cobalt “ on the ingredients lists. Testing is not that expensive, especially when these companies make MULLIONS of the products. I suspect they do know how much is in there, they just don’t want to disclose it! They are missing a huge market! If the tested products were available in USA , many would buy them! PS nickel and cobalt can be inadvertently added to products during the manufacture process

I am still having my first hard-core Rosacea flare. It got so bad with the redness and burning, I was finding it hard to talk. A little over a week ago I found Vanicream gentle face cleanser and it’s given me some hope (no burning sensation). Moisturizers have been very tricky, but Vanicream face moisturizer for sensitive skin has, so far, been without reaction. I had tried the Aveeno calm and restore balm the night before, and woke up to a devastatingly maroon face. Was so depressed, I laid in bed most of the day. I’m wearing a sun hat in the house, as I’m trying to give my skin a couple of weeks to heal before attempting to try another (mineral) sunscreen. I was able to get into my derm earlier this week, and he gave me prescriptions for Soolantra and Azaleic Acid 15% gel. I picked them up, but am too scared to use them. The two Vanicream products I mentioned are the only products (so far) that have not made it worse. Soon, I hope to feel confident enough to try the prescriptions. He also “prescribed” a Niacinimide based moisturizer for $48, but the night I noticed it has fragrance in it. Hasn’t helped me to feel confident in using the other two products he prescribed. I found the Vanicream moisturizer the next day. Another little ray of hope. Gotta have hope.

I just had my 1st out of 3-4 treatments and notice an improvement already. Vbeam is the gold standard for rosacea, broken facial capillaries and facial redness I have tried other treatments such as bbl laser which is pretty much useless for rosacea which I didn’t know at the time. If you decide on laser please go for Vbeam only. I don’t want you wasting your money like I did.

I started using a lot of scammy skincare products from The Ordinary and other brands that did not seem to improve my acne and hyperpigmentation. After watching a lot of Dr. Dray's videos, I decided to visit a dermatologist. I'm currently on tretinoin 0,025% at night + azelaic acid 20% twice a day. My dermatologist said after I reach 30 days in a row with the tretinoin every night we're going to titrate to 0,05% and then 0,1%. Purging isn't as bad as I thought and my skin is tolerating the tretinoin quite well. I'm spending less money on cosmetics and being supervised by a professional, I feel a lot more hopeful now. It's awesome to have this type of information to discuss with my doctor. Thank you so much! ❤

@@lucybelle5459 no, I name them scammy because some of the ingredients do not have relevant scientific data to back them UP (both in strength and formulation aka 10% niacinamide - can be too irritating, defeating the purpose of the active itself, aka pure vitamin c in powder form (unstable formulation, patchy aplication, without research to back the absorption up). I could go on with The Ordinary and several other cosmetic brands and products. Maybe if you kept up with Dr. Drays videos, you wouldn't go out of your way to have such a fragile reply.

Been on and off Azelaic Acid from the Ordinary. Worked well the 1st week or so, then the “purging” began, but never seemed to stop so I quit after 4-8 weeks. Then started it again recently, same result. Only got worse. Bumps everywhere… I have sensitive Rosacea fungal acne skin. Disappointing as I can’t use Retinol. The 2nd time I tried it with Good Molecules Beta Arbutin Vitamin C Serum. Not a good idea. I already knew I shouldn’t as my skin hates any type of vitamin C and it’s derivatives. Tried all the hyped and popular ones. Same result, bumps, hives and even “cysts”. Gave up. Going back to minimal because my skin hates skincare, and Avene discontinued the only moisturizer I could use (Avene Tolerance Extreme Light), tho it also broke me out, but not as bad as 99% of all skincare out there. Tried everything after watching countless of derms, doctors and beauty gurus on KZbin rave about American, European, Korean and Japanese skincare products since 2019. Nothing works. My doctor prescribed Zoolantra, didn’t work either. Made it worse. All I can do is to avoid the sun, I’m vitamin D deficient and was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 back in January, and watch what I eat as I have a bunch of food intolerances and allergies…

I have autoimmune dermatitis from the sun , and the medication to treat my autoimmune causes sun sensitive photo dermatitis. I will have success with something, and then it quits. It's expensive to test products and such a bummer when a winner starts failing. I have noticed I have to rotate my products frequently about every 6 weeks to keep results. I have yet to tolerate a product long enough to empty its contents unless it was sample size. Since I have to rotate between several products, they'll expire before I use them up.

I think she reviewed one product in her video, skin barrier repairing peptides. Otherwise the only channels I've seen cover NIOD are master esty Penn Smith Skincare, Gothamista and Sincerely Miss Ash (Canada). Doctor Anne (germany, not a derm) has covered some of the products along with the No BS Beauty channel.

I use azaleic acid in the morning. For some reason I cant find finacea anywhere (I live in Latin America) but I did find another brand in Colombia called Rozaleic. My Doctor said if I couldnt find it I cannuse Soolantra instead. In the evening I use Adeferin (I guess the latino version of Differin). Three months of consistent use and the improvement to my rosacea and overall skin health is notable. I dont really see any improvement on dark spots/hyperpigmentation though. I use nothing else except sunscreen and moisturizer.

The Ordinary Azelaic Acid is a "suspension", so more of a cream. I use this in the AM with the Timeless Vitamin C, which is very watery, so I always apply it early in my routine. I apply the azelaic acid right before moisturizer, after my other serums because it is the thickest in terms of consistency. Should I be worried about absorption here?

I had started out using azelaic acid suspension 10 percent, and resveratol 3 percent + ferulic acid 3 percent, and hyaluronic acid 17 percent and retinol 1.5 percent complex only using the retinol 1.5 percent complex at night, and saw how good salicylic acid works for clearing blackheads thought that might be good to add in to my routine. Turns out I ended up with dry flaky skin and redness and some puffy spots too, I am now pretty much cleared up but I did experiment to determine what caused the reaction and I believe it was the salicylic acid with the resveratol ferulic acid, because I had no problems before I used the salicylic acid, and I tried using the other ones with out the resveratol ferulic acid and had no problems, just wondering what your opinion is on this very much appreciated.

Throwing azelaic acid and retinol and salicylic acid at your skin is a LOT. So it's no surprise your skin freaked out. Many derms and estheticians recommend using only retinol for a period of maybe 6 months and then take another look at your skin to see if you even need another product.
