We love azaleic acid in my household. I’m using it for my rosacea and breakouts (45), my 15yo daughter for rough skin and acne and 17yo son for deeper acne. We’re all experiencing great results and now, after adding AA to his morning and evening routine, my son has the best looking skin in his class (took him 4 months to get there) with practically no acne at all, ever. azelaic acid was a game changer for my skin. healed my extremely broken / damaged / purple colored skin (from benzoyl peroxide usage that was too much for my sensitive skin apparently) and evened out my skin tone and some of my textured acne scars, not just the red marks im talking about actual scars with depressions in the skin. azelaic acid made them smoother. it's a holy grail i will keep using.

I started dealing with hormonal acne after going off of birth control at 25. I never had acne in my teens, so I did all kinds of research. I tried salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, topical antibiotics, etc. and the acne persisted. A few months ago I saw one of Dr. Dray's videos about azelaic acid. My real life dermatologist never mentioned this as a recommended treatment, but I was desperate for clear skin, so I purchased The Ordinary's OTC azelaic acid cream and it has literally changed my life. I went from having new breakouts every single day to not having a single blemish for 3 months straight. If you are struggling with what you believe is hormonal acne, you MUST try this stuff. It's super affordable as well.

I tried it as I used Skinoren, after moisturizing my skin. My skin was stinging and burning, both ways, tried to apply it immediately also wait until my skin is completely dry. None of them worked. Finally managed to make it work. I use it after cleansing to fully dried skin, then apply a moisturizer. This is my experience. Hope it helps someone.

9:27 Another reason of the stinging I've heard from my pharmacist friend is the challenging formulation. It's very difficult to dissolve azelaic acid properly. So in some not well formulated products there's partial extra high concentration which can lead to irritation. I personally use the 15% one from Isispharma and never have problems due to their patented formula. The Ordinary 10% and Facetheory 15% sting like hell.

Thank you for everything you do for us! I know you recommend the Gold Bond Age Renew Retinol Cream. Is it ok to use that cream on chest and back for breakouts?

I recently came off of birth control for no particular reason apart from me feeling not myself whilst taking it. My skin BROKE OUT very very bad. I was on treclin gel whilst on the pill but felt I had become immune to it a little. Bought IS clinical’s very very expensive cleanser and active serum, that made my face so so sensitive and made my breakouts worse. Two weeks ago i switched back to a very basic Cetaphil cleanser, simple soothing toner and simple moisturiser with azaelic acid on top and my skin is nearly completely clear again with a few dark marks remaining. If I get a new spot I dab azaelic acid on it at night and it will be flat or a white head by the morning. I will implement treclin or a tretnoin back into my skincare once my skin calms down again but right now azaelic acid is amazing

For me anti-biotics should only be used if it is more likely to affect your overall health, but in most cases of skin issues like acne, you just need skin turn over to discourage bacteria to propagate in your skin. In a way, it's a natural process that would be beneficial to your skin in the long run.

i've have been using BHA 2%, Retinol 1%, Retinal 0.1 or even tretinoin 0.1 (as a spot treatment) for years and i heard that Azelaic acid was much more gentle so i decided to try it. However, everytime i put it on, my skin suffers stinging and irriating, despite the fact that I chose the Azelaic Booster from Paula Choice's, the most recommended one (dont get me wrong, the texture is awesome), but still... Such a shame! My skin is combo oily, acne prone. And i often used Az acid as the first step after cleansing. I've tried to use a soothing/calming toner before or followed with a gentle mosturizer/ facial oil or both, but it didnt prevent my skin from irritation (it was less but still there). I wanted to like Azealic acid but i guess it's not for me.

Azelaic acid is notoriously difficult to formulate because it’s a powder, so it could be that or it could be another ingredient in that product. I’d try prescription azelaic acid if that’s possible for you. It’s definitely possible that you’re just sensitive to it but it’s really well tolerated so it may be worth a try if you’re interested :)
