In the fourth of the seven letters, the Son of Man finds qualities worthy of rich commendation, recognizing works of loving, heartfelt service in a community that needed such a credible witness to the gospel. He also finds, however, that the church has permitted an unhealthy influence to lead some in a direction that can only end in disaster.

Such a sensible and intelligent perspective in a crazy world. I like the groundedness of this teaching on Revelation. It’s making my heart sing.

I really appreciate your teaching! I have found all of your videos incredibly insightful and a very helpful in my understanding of the Church's history. I'm not a Calvinist, but your explanations make me question my assumed Armenian views :) Thank you and please keep them coming!

I was raised in a home where my parents thought disciplining with "a rod of iron" meant the use of belts, slapping, and brute force is what God meant. Even as a child I knew this was a misinterpretation of scripture. When I think of ALL the misinterpreted doctrines in the church I understand why the world is in such a place of horror. If the church was teaching the truth and living according to TRUE scripture, then our country would be a great place to live even among the heathens. Clearly we've gone off into a ditch. We've had nothing but wars, famine, pestilence, poverty for over 1300 years. Ill be glad when we begin to repent and maybe spared from the wrath that has arrived worldwide.

I enjoy your lectures. I am from a dispensational background but an moving away from that. In 1981 I was at a Summer session at Regent College in Vancouver. I was sitting next to an American who was a Presbyterian. I mentioned to him that the United Church of Canada was a merger of the Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregationalist churches. He found that hard to believe. He said"how can you merge Calvin and Wesley?". I told him that when Western Canada was opening up in the last part of the 19th century there were a lot of towns where there were not enough Presbyterians to have a Presbyterian church and there were not enough Methodists to have a Methodist church. Out of necessity the Protestants had to meet together. Or there might be a Methodist church might have people that were from other churches because those churches did not exist in smaller areas. When the idea of merger came along it was already there in a lot of places. One historian said it was Methodism that built the British Empire but I believe it was Scottish Presbyterians that built Canada. I might add that two thirds of the Loyalists that came to Canada after 1784 where Scots or Americans of Scottish origin. However in the case of Scottish highlanders that supported Bonnie Prince Charley they were Roman Catholics.

Interesting. You might enjoy a series I am planning for next fall entitled: Presbyterians and the American Revolution. I plan to cover some of the points you raised here at that time! Thanks again.

Also from a Dispensational background myself and a conservative evangelical as well. This is good teaching on Revelation that builds up my spirit. Unlike the Pre-trib Rapture teaching, I'm so familiar with, that doesn't. It seems to be always, "searching and never coming to the knowledge of the truth.". This made me think of your denomination, PC (USA), as a possible one to consider attending. But realized it's quite liberal and doesn't believe homosexuality is a sin. Therefore I will have to look elsewhere then. Because I can't go back to any church that teaches a futuristic interpretation of Bible prophecy. Because your denomination has a liberal stance on human sexuality and sin, etc. And as you suggest that Thyatira's commendation for their good works may apply to your church? Is it possible that the Lord's rebuke of Thyatira applies as well?

I agree, in general I cannot recommend the PCUSA. There are, however, some individual churches that remain faithful.

Thank you for this series, Bruce. Regarding 2:27, how would you reconcile the interpretation of "he shall shepherd" with the context of Psalms 2:9? Thanks. Dan

Thanks for the feedback! Jesus shepherds his people both as their sovereign, calling them to obedience, but also as their protector, guarding them against enemies. As to the former, his rod breaks their hearts of rebellion in his love, but as to the latter, he destroys them in his wrath (Matt. 21:44).

Hi Bruce, thank you again for your videos. I noticed that at about the 43rd minute mark, the slides/video seem to skip over your thoughts on verse 28 about the morning star. Are you able to shed some light/provide helpful resources on this language? Does this have any connection to views regarding the planet, Venus? Particularly in light of Rev 22:16 and Isaiah 14:12. Blessings to you, brother.

Yes, I had to skip over some material because of a late start. In general, the Morning Star is tied to the idea of a promise of good things coming, as in a star that serves as evidence that the day is about to dawn. If this is so, then it probably relates to an idea of hope planted in the Christian psyche, that sees our actions as related to good things that God is doing in history building his kingdom. A good comment on this is found in David Chilton’s Days of Vengeance which provides quite insightful comment on the entire book. Thanks for your kind feedback! b

Really enjoy your lectures! But, you are really getting the idea of works wrong. What works are you supposing we are to do to get saved? What did the thief on the cross do for “works” to get saved? Our “works” are faith and love. “And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭10:25-28

I think you answered the question that you put to Bruce. "Love your neighbor". We are a community of God at the same time we are a community of man. If we love our neighbor, our works will show that. We will minister to the sick and the poor as our Lord did. We will share the fruits of our faith as our Lord did. Our works will try to Shephard the community of man into the community of God. How will our faith and love of the Lord profit anyone if we do not share it as the fish and the bread. By giving away (sharing the works of salvation) our gift from God, we do not diminish our share in it, we increase it by giving honor and glory and praise to the Lord. This is the fruit of Salvation. If we do not perform works, we bear no fruit, and become the fruitless tree that Christ killed. We must bear fruit to obey the last charge of Christ to his Disciples to go out into the world and spread his word.
