Thank you, that's kind of you to say so. Its fun "footering" about in it. And to many people's surprise.... doesn't take a whole of time either! If you go about it correctly, plan and keep on top of things early on, the amount of time and attention a garden needs is really not that much. Good research, a little knowledge and time spent "little and often" is the key! Have you subscribed to our channel? If you haven't, you might like to think about it, because once you are subscribed, each time we post a new video (which we are doing all the time), you will find that they will turn up automatically in your feed. And, as you find our videos helpful, it would be great if you could kindly share the links with your friends and click the "like" button too, because that helps other people find out about the information as well. And, now that we are entering the main planting season (spring through late Fall) try to visit our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ They are located all over our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region, that's where you will find all sorts of beautiful, tried and true and cutting edge, top performing selections, so be sure to stop in regularly throughout the seasons because there's fresh shipments coming in weekly.

It is interesting that we have seen the popularity of some selections of Eastern Arborvitae decline in areas with high populations of deer whereas the demand for Western Arborvitae and its hybrids has risen substantially. As David mentions in this video, starving deer will be driven to eat almost anything that it perceives as having nutrition, so its often a matter of trying to plant things that are generically left alone, while at the same time employing a variety of methods like he demonstrates in this video. Oh my gosh do we have deer!!! We are near Pinehurst NC zone 8a. I have been gardening most of my 53 years, I’ve even managed a few nurseries and these deer have eaten things I’ve never seen before!!! They always keep me guessing. Most of the soap repellent don’t really work with these deer. We have found the deer repellent made by, I MUST GARDEN works rather well. We are putting up a fence this summer and we are so excited!! A few plants and some shrubs they’ve never eaten are lavender, Russian sage, certain salvias, dianthus, nepeta, daffodils, hyacinths, allium, astilbe, bleeding hearts, oregano, some sage, thyme, peony, barberry, golden mops, and most “graceful” grasses like muhly grass. I know there’s others but this is tried and true for me.

I have just found your youtube channnel . Thank you for yourwonderful information. I am living inJapan. I have a small garden in country side and I have the same problem . Repeatedly troubled with deer . (Why does deer love hosta so much ? 😂 Deer crosses borders) Recently I noticed that deer don't eat pink ,red color leaf and flowers. I don't know the reason why they avoid them. In my area ,the ranger?(sorry,I don't know in English)plants saplings constantly and they wrap pink vinyl string around the young stem of cherryblossom. (Deer likes young cherryblossom) I don't know why they do that but maybe it is for dealing with deer. So I expermentally started to stick a branch wrapped in pink vinyl tape near the plants or surround the area with pink string tape. And it works for now. They(deer)hesitate to eat them. But the problem is pink color string is eyesore ,do not match in nature.

And groundhog, it just cut down my 1/2” or more stems for no reason (must be mad I caged my vegetable beds)

Thank you, we are pleased to hear that you found our video helpful. Rabbits (and ground hogs) often build up in numbers and can be frustrating too, but David says since his dogs are out frequently in his garden, the rabbits seem to stay away, and therefore not present a significant problem in his garden. How can the deer smell the soap if it’s still in the box? Thanks for the good advice.
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Believe it or not, the scent that they use in the soap is so strong that it easily permeates the cardboard. The nice thing about keeping the cardboard on is that it protects the soap from rainfall, so it lasts longer! David goes on to mention that normally in his garden a bar presented this way will last an entire growing season - so it only has to be done once each year! 😉👏 Have you subscribed to our channel? 19. A hungry wolf. 20. A gun. A few years ago, I couldn't figure out why my roses didn't rebloom and my new fruit trees were being eaten. I live just two miles from a city center! When I saw a herd of deer in my back yard the mystery was solved. My best success has been with the stinky spray, but yes, you have to keep up with it. Haven't tried soap, although I do have some pretty smelly bars. I imagine you could also try the horrible cologne someone gave you for Christmas which was never used. :) I've noticed that deer don't like stiff or jaggy leaves, fuzzy foliage, and leaves that have their own scent, like bee balm and many herbs. They have eaten some lilies, but daylilies seem to be less tasty. And they rarely touch daisies. I always plant tulips mixed in with daffodils for protection. On their own, tulips are the first thing to get munched.

How do you protect your plants from rabbits?
@OverdevestNurseries Жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question. David says that his two springer spaniels keep the rabbits on his garden "on the move" and that deters them from causing him any issues, but he goes on to mention that over the years he has found that erecting a ring of chicken wire around the plants you want to protect, is the best way he knows of protecting them. He adds that because hungry rabbits can scratch or borrow under the bottom edge, it is important to bend 3-4 Inches of the base of the wire outwards. as you put it down. The wire is a bit unsightly but at least that will stop the rabbits from grazing on your plants. Have you subscribed to our channel? I have/had? a bunny issue this year. Worst I've seen in my entire life.

Yes, rabbits (and ground hogs) often build up in numbers and can be frustrating too, but David says since his dogs are out frequently in his garden, the rabbits seem to stay away, and therefore not present a significant problem in his garden. The ring of fine mesh galvanized wire (buried at the base, because rabbits can burrow under it) is probably the best option. Have you subscribed to our channel? One thing thar most never think of is feed lots . There are people who will feed the deer and other wildlife in winter. But some having large properties will hunt on them and use feed lots to attract the deer intentionally which is wrong for so many reasons and opinions of my I own . This is drawing deer into neighborhoods where some of the residents don't want them . I do not know how to find the information on who is doing this. My suggestion would be to find people in your neighborhood who hunt and ask them if they know who might have feed lots on their properties and don't say why you want the info. It's not deceptive. Lol 😂 but the attracting of deer into roads is wrong. And the deer eat up hundreds of dollars worth of landscaping.

Thanks. David also mentions that often overlooked and under-reported aspects of deer populations in neighborhoods, is the serious danger that deer present in road accidents! Judging by the amount of dead carcasses that he has seen lying by road sides (and at the boundary of his own garden), the frequency of these occurrences is substantial and very serious. Especially in horrific instances when windscreens are broken and terrified (thrashing and flailing) animals enter the interior of vehicles. And it is important to remember that deer bring in ticks that spread Lyme disease! So when naive neighbors feed deer and artificially increase populations, they are not being kind to "wild" animals, they are in fact endangering the lives of their family and those of their neighbors.
