Did some 6 and 7 month swings on tankers in my early days at sea. Sailed out of the UK and the Netherlands this was in the 70s I was an engineer.

@@SailorDean4 Times were good back then so much more care free ,long stays in port ,no containers,just crane and derrick work for loading and discharging worked on all types,liners,bulkers,tankers reefers/general cargo all different but the enjoyment was the same along with the adventure.

Glad its workin for you. Ive seen some guys join the ship for the first time sayin its their dream job and by the time we get out of the Houston Ship channel and hit the sea buoy they on the stern throwing up. Im like dude, were not even at sea, its the Gulf of Mexico. Im curious how long you been sailing. Cause I do remember my company telling me (enthusiastically) Im going to Egypt, Bangladesh, Jordan, Djibouti, like they sending me on an all expense paid cruise and you know damn well your gonna be on a ship more akin to the one Ben Hur was on. Been on any grain ships yet? Stay away from them, grain dust gets everywhere, not to mention where your goin the people are prolly starving, during the feed the world program In the early 90's I was in Dhaka, children 4,5,6 yr olds so weak they couldnt stand, bellies swollen, grown folks walking over them. As a kid I always thought there was something better, its a big world. What I found was a lot of poverty, apathy and the world seems much smaller. Dont get me wrong had some nice times, broke a few hearts, some broke mine. Smuggled lots of drugs cause as you know most countries dont have an FDA. You can buy most drugs right over the counter in a pharmacy. I used to buy em by the boxes. Dont need scripts. After buying every drug in every pharmacy in town. Then it was time to find a girl to hook up with. Be careful with that, I have 2 foreign kids one in Russia one in Mexico that I know of. Ive seen the world, 52 countries, they are all shitholes to me, some worst than others. It just got to the point where I realized theres no place like home, America. Then one day like any other I went to inspect some explosion proof wiring in the pumproom. Stepped on the platform and it collapsed. Didnt have a safety harness, fell 50 ft. Ended my career at 36. Just thought I'd point out some of the bad. I sailed 18 yrs, my dad 51 no major accident, my grandfather 38, crane broke loose and he got hit in the head with the hook, took half his face off. You stay safe young man. I wish you a long career and hope you get your 3rd mates license. Hawsepipers are a rare breed.

@ I’m from Houston Texas and I’m 27 bro, I’ve always wanted to work on ship and get out there, your videos have inspired me to pursue getting my merchant mariners license. I don’t think I can afford to go to siu for 8 months, what’s your advice for next steps to a completely green guy like me for getting onto a tanker or cargo ship?

That company operated the Overseas Vivian which was immortalized in the merchant marine book Steaming to Bamboola by Christopher Buckley whose father was William F Buckley. Six months is a long time to stay aboard a merchant ship. I used to get off after four months.
@SailorDean4
@SailorDean4 2 ай бұрын

@@SailorDean4 We had one lunatic on the M/V Advantage in the MSC Mediterranean Pre-Po squadron back in the late ‘80s through early ‘90s including Desert Storm who spent 14 months as the steward’s assistant without a break. After leaving the Advantgage I’d get disgusted with some ships and just quit and buy my own airline ticket to repatriate after doing a quick drunk in a foreign hotel somewhere. I finally threw in the towel and went to barber college back in ‘95 to do that for 20 years. Originally I was a submarine quartermaster in the navy.

@@SailorDean4 Barbering is also crazy as was teaching ghetto high school and GED at Job Corps. At both of my teaching jobs the kids would riot occasionally and I also got paid overtime to ride up front on a Cleveland Police Department paddy-wagon pointing out truants from our building for them to stuff into the cage in the back to be forcibly returned to Cleveland South High school which I am proud to say was so shitty that it had to be shut down when the building was only twenty some years old.

Hey man how common are those huge waves swallowing the ship as you see in those shorts with pirates of the caribbean music? Also how long does the ship spend in each port usually? Awesome content!

Most ships avoid big storms and every sea is different but sometimes you get caught in a bad storm you can’t avoid it just happens weather is unpredictable and the port stays differ per ship and the cargo you are discharging

I am currently in the SIU apprentice program. I have been trying to figure out what i should do living situation wise once I finish the program. I am single with no kids. Should I get an apartment even though I will probably be at sea 8 months a year? Should I just stay in extended stay hotels in between hitches? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
@SailorDean4
@SailorDean4 2 ай бұрын
I know plenty of sailors who stay in hotels there are union hotels for very cheap near certain union halls I personally have an apartment also a lot of sailors live overseas because it’s very cheap I’m going to go do that sometime in the future it really depends on what kind of life you wanna live off the ship
