Lmao, about the food scarcity. Ironic when ships carry the vast majority of food supermarkets and restaurants end up throwing away in dumpsters. Yet they will hit people with a misdemeanor for walking out the door without paying a bag of apples. They could have at least advise the sailors about the living conditions before they pack their bags. You have learn to think for yourself, its similar to being in military boot camp, military deployment, prison, jail, a homeless shelter, basically anywhere crowdy with uncertainty. All you have is your initiative and your options. You have to think for yourself and dont wait for people tell you shit. Dont sit around and wait for your boss to tell you what the day is going to be like. Thats how you end up eating peanut butter sandwhiches twelve days in a row. Man, by the end of the first day, me and the cooks will be best buddies and im eating like them. You could miss me with that scarcity nonsense. And that old guy dumping his man diapers is going to get a rude wake up call. Its all politics, you left that big detail out buddy. Politics is everything in crowdy work conditions. Military, prisons, factories, ships, mines, whatever. Its all work politics. The shittier the condition, the more meaningful your disposition is.

@SailorDean4 Well.. I was a guest lecturer there. There was always some kind of chaos at night in town. The authorities seemed sort of lax. I get the impression this was way different than a drunken brawl because that happens all the time and as long as someone doesn't end up with brain damage the police never really cared that much.

That first point right there is why I'm willing to wait a year for Piney Point. I'm on the Gulf Coast. There's a Sea School just 45 minutes away. I could be "ready to go" in five days for $1100. BUT, I'm 42. I like the thought of getting on that ship knowing something rather than knowing nothing.

I had an Uncle and was in the Navy and decided to get out right before WW2. He’d been on a submarine and had been in 10 years. He was planning to go to the merchant marines. The attack on Pearl Harbor put him in the Navy another 4 years. When the War was over he finally got to go. He went in the Merchant Marines and he told me he went around the world 23 times in all. The past few years before he retired he worked on a fire boat in the Port Author,Texas. I remember when I was a kid he always had stories to tell.

Even though you went through some tough tribulations in your youth it got you to success. I wish the same story was true for me, but I made some mistakes in my youth which to most would be considered right choices, like joining the Army. This decision basically became a crucible for my early development and destroyed a lot of opportunities for me. Then I worked for a small business with what I thought would be promises of a good future well in fact I just got caught up in a dead end job and even though it was a rough nearly twenty years of labor, 8-5 M-F, I thought the boss would split proceeds from the sale of his business since I had been with them so long. Well this didn't happen, and the owners retired multimillionaires with an added bonus from the money of the sold business. I also was approached with a similar opportunity like merchant seaman when I was in my early twenties, some guy tried to get me working the canneries in Alaska, but his stories of work related injuries and deaths, scared me away! I wish he'd been a merchant seaman though cause I probably wouldve signed on, and by now would qualify for retirement benefits. This was back in 2004!

FUNNY ! I have gone through hurricanes (HUGO) where the actual furniture in our rooms broke loose and ended up being battering rams in the rooms Left Valdez Alaska in the middle of winter, we had a draft of like 70 feet fully loaded and we were rolling 45 degrees because of the swell ! I worked on a 120 foot NOAA Oceanographic seismic ship off the coast of California That thing ROLLED like crazy, I could look out my porthole one second I'd see the sky, the next I'd be seeing the ocean, it rolled that much ! Thankfully in 35 years I NEVER got seasick ! Can't even remember any of my shipmates getting seasick either or at least they didn't talk about it Can think of 2 ports where all of us wanted to run ashore but the facility would not let us One was after getting out of the shipyard in Singapore headed for a refinery in Barrow Island Australia. The other was in the tip of Sicily at Malazzo. Were not allowed to go through the refinery and were STUCK on board, pissed all of OFF !

The international community decided that American merchant marine, including unionism, need not apply, so the worst common international standards apply. Our country has a lot of issues, but we could all work together as a team of workers.
