My machine runs ok for now . Just a thought on last video. On the measurements for pully they free float the spring pulls and cable brackets push . If its not well lube one sticks and stays in gauged that was a problem i had . New spacer and lube and adjust the belt guide wire thats rubbing.fixed mine for a year now. Hope this helps.😀

To James Craft Did you install an electric clutch ? How does it work now ? Any videos or pics on that modification? Moving those pumps in and out I believe is a bad design. The 4 hoses connecting to those pumps are always flexing probably contributing to chronic hydraulic line leaks. An electric clutch is a great solution.

Can you link or give us specs for the new belts? Thanks man.

Brian, Is there a relief valve to open to move the machine without the engine running?

Mine is set up asymmetrical, same as yours. I'm no expert but when the clutch was disengaged, the belt was also. I believe that is the way it was designed. Who knows who did what yours or mine, but mine ran fine with the belt being loose until engaged. I think that's what all those weird rods sticking out are for, to keep it in position while loose, but they shouldn't rub while engaged causing excess wear. They are adjustable to fine tune their position. Seems like an overly elaborate design. Seems like you figured it out at any rate. Any helpful hints as to removing the engine? I'm getting ready to swap mine out as well due to a bad magneto I believe (which they don't make any more)

So facing the back of the engine right pump drive is that supposed to run all the time?

The pulleys are not equidistant from center line.possibly due because one pump is upside down and pump's shaft is not centered with reference to mounting bolts. I simplified this crazy engagement mechanism by installing an electric linear actuator and got rid of all that metal engagement mechanism.

I agree Fred, my point is that all of the manuals say there the same belt.. There obviously not the same belt and the manuals are wrong.. it might be a little bit of info to help someone.

I just replaced all 3 belts on my 1816 and the 2 pump belts were same length. Now that said my pumps are independently adjusted for tension. I dont have that spring setup on mine.

Mine uses an electric PTO I can switch on and off. It's a factory option. When I got it,it had an auto clutch that made cold starts in Canadian winters a pain in the a.. lol the electric PTO is way better. I will be doing a engine swap come spring. I have a 18hp vanguard vtwin I'm replacing the 16hp techumseh single with. The techumseh runs so does the spare it came with but I find it lacks power.

Any info on the electric clutch would be helpful mine is All mucked up I bought it from a guy who installed a predator engine but did not align the pulleys the manual pto is always on so it creeps when you start it . I am tearing it apart and starting over .

Also the pulleys move out when you engage the clutch right?

I have an Onan engine on my 1816, and the right pump needs a smaller belt than the left, or it squeals.

There not the same size belt.. I also found the two hydraulic pumps need to move freely. If one is harder to move than the other, resolve it and you should be all set. The system has so many adjustments when it's right you will know

I believe the manual calls for the two different size belts?

All 3 pumps are independently adjusted. I just changed my belts a few months ago the 2 drive pump belts were the same only the hydrolics pump belt was longer as its mounted above

Did the longer belt on the right side make a difference? I’m fighting the same issues right now that left has minimal to no power and right is good. I tried a shorter belt on left, but right side tension was still a problem with clutch disengaged. I’m curious to know what you ultimately found the issue to be. Then what was the solution?

How did you choose the replacement engine? My original engine has a lot of hours on it and am expecting to change it in the future.

A Briggs vanguard Vtwin will fit right on it the bolt holes on engine plate even line up with the vanguards. The only issue you'll have is the original 16hp techumseh has a huge crank shaft 1 1/4" and vanguard has a standard 1" crank. So you'll either have to get a step up adapter or buy a smaller triple pulley for it. Other issue is exhaust! The vanguard stock exhaust blows out crank side, right at you lol. I made a custom exhaust up for mine using 1" tubing and a old metal fire extinguisher.

I scrapped the engine, the head gasket was blown and it was ran out of oil. It unfortunately wasn't repairable.

man this is some weird engineering. the gehl/hesston uses one belt around all 3 pulleys. the main gearotor is driven off the crank directly.

I've decided to eliminate the whole manual clutch, moving pulley/pump nightmare. I ordered an electric pto clutch. I can't see why it wouldn't work, we'll see.

I haven't finished everything, it's a lazy process. Everything fits though. I had to modify pulley positions and completely move the auxiliary pulley to the right side. When I finish it I'll post a video.

@@jamescraft3501 finish yet I’m doing mine over next it has. Harbor freight engine which is 1/2” higher so I have to lower the mount plate to make it right was thinking of just trying one belt with the manual set up

@@jamescraft3501 mine has the predator motor I just want to try one belt do you have a part number for the electric clutch you bought . Keep in mind the predator motor is 1/2” higher than the motor that was in it I am cutting the plate and lowering it as we speak
