Agreed. Recently they both disagreed and directly named each other. Maybe they don’t want to risk looking like they don’t know what they’re talking about if they argue about a point and one comes out on top or something along those lines. I’d love to see a video of these two and another guy or two (like Nippard and Tnf). They’re grown men and can at least discuss stuff and ultimately come to a better conclusion. Paul and Nippard seem to be on friends at the moment and see them come to agreements in the comments at times.

Great discussion! I've gotten so much out of these podcasts, most of all they've been a guide to keep myself from being a dumbass. I'm certainly predisposed to ego life and try to snap my tendons off the bone to look tough, but listening to smart body builders like Dr Mike and Steve just over and over tell us to take it easy and remember training is a long-term process has been helpful for me to keep my ego in check. Lifting for muscle growth really requires discipline and patience.

Extremely important podcast, I learnt a lot, thanks. Now I got it clear, how genious is Steve Shaw's rep goal system or Scott Stevenson' s cluster sets are: they offer the competitiveness on the psychological side yet you still can focus more on good form. And of course, more effective reps as well.

I am now 40min into podcast, rir VS failure, and here is, I sense, most important part of musclebuilding secret, one that I verify lately while training myself: train HARD and SMART. Both is needed in a way of "cultivating ability to train to failure(or1or 2RIR) and at the same time tracking your loading and volume. Great video. I would only add that when I train to failure Or close, low volume-high effort, than I change excercises more often since I hit plateu quicker (can't add reps or weight) comparing to high volume training. On the other side, high(er) volume training drains me more which is probably becuase of my age (50) but is mentaly easier to do (compared to a restpause sets that Iam doing currently). Apologies for crappy english....

@@ReviveStronger its training and eating based off of neurotransmitters dominance,to some degree. Charles Poliquin started it , Christain expanded it. It has been very well constructed. You can look up Thibarmy neurotyping on KZbin to familiarize yourself with. But he runs Tnation as well and has for a while., one of Paul's friends/mentors I believe, he references Dr. Mike and Eric Helms and Schonefield periodically on Tnation He was Charles Poloquins protege He also has a low volume approach , pertained to controlling cortisol I think your listeners would love to hear his well documented experience and expertise , As well as Stan Efferding (he seems to love doing podcasts) Someone who also has a lot of experience in the sport , and a lot of expertise in nutrition as well. You really need to get the original, Mr Hypertrophy, Bryan Haycock on to debate Mike because he's the progenitor in terms of systematising a lot of what's being talk about in these discussions. Really, in terms of hypertrophy, this was figured out in his HST program created 20 years ago. Lifts start at a 5-6RIR and progress over a fixed rep, 2 week block until the trainee hits a failure or PR point then backs the weight down again to a 5RIR and runs up to hit new PR's or progressions at a different rep range. Every second week has you feeling ultra refreshed so that you're not building tonnes of systemic fatigue over time and waiting for that week 4 deload. Train like this twice a day 6 days a week and you will get much stronger and grow like a weed.

You know, for a change of pace I thought I would try the opposite and train to failure. But for one all out set. Doing a whole body routine. Doing such when I had recovered from the last. So in practice a couple of days in between. So no more than 3 sets a week. Unless I'm a rank beginner I should not be making progress. But I am. Dumbbell Row has gone from 110 lbs X 20 to 130 without straps. Not the strongest bastard around but far from the weakest. For a natural bloke in his forties that's not too shabby. Other ex's have improved by similar %'s. Maybe I accrued a lot of fatigue and my body is responding to break from that. If that's the case the gains will slowly come to a stop. Time will tell. I don't challenge the research. But in the hierarchy what I personally experience I place at the top. After writing this I followed a suggest vid link at the side to Jeff Nippard's channel, looks like I am doing option 3 : kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5vEY5l6rL50a9U

Great! Most often, when it comes to volume/bodybuilding though, it's like you said, it's the accumulation of fatigue. If you're progressing rapidly in a meso, then probably because fitness & readiness is much higher than fatigue. - Pascal
@vaughanstarr3725
@vaughanstarr3725 5 жыл бұрын
@@ReviveStronger I agree. But when I come of the cruise phase and am back on blast (DC style training) if I continue advance so that I am considerably stronger still. Lets say 160 X 20 DB Row, would I really have made so much more progress by being weaker and doing more volume? We are talking 20 RM's here, not 1 rep maxes. For me anyway it seems very counter intuitive that being noticeably weaker on higher rep RM's is the best way to go. Again, not arguing the research, just saying for myself I am finding it more motivational to go all out for one set where I am advancing each workout. And if I can add almost 30% weight to a 20 RM, even on low volume, that has got to come with muscle adaptation. Time will tell I guess. If it doesn't produce results I will drop it.
@vaughanstarr3725
@vaughanstarr3725 5 жыл бұрын
Well, in the interests of being open about the experience and letting the results dictate, I thought I would post an update to the DC training: What a disaster!!! Did a 10 RM on the majors with two rest pause. So 10, 3 and 2 reps. With 20 secs rest on the rest pause work. Man, it kicked the crap out of me! I was tremendously sore afterwards. So much so that I took a full five days just to recover. All the time thinking that as a result of this pain I would be making fantastic gains on the next workout! Well guess what? Didn't improve at all! With one set to failure I was making gains, but DC stuff is just too far. And now, I am fried. I reckon I will have to take the best part of week off before I can even train again. How fried? DC Dumbbell Row 150 X 14//4/3. Six days later? 135 for 2 sets of 15. I stopped at that point because the weight just felt ridiculously heavy. I loved training to failure. I love the immediate challenge. But, there's no getting around it, it fries you. You fatigue out too quickly. When I come back from the rest will look to do a volume meso, increasing such and lowering RIR.

I'm with Paul on this one. I agree with almost everything Mike says training wise in principle but disagree in the way he applies the principles. Plus I don't think for hypertrophy it is necessary to intentionally overreach and then take a deload because you overdid the volume and then need the deload. Not that anyone cares. But you should definitely find what you enjoy doing so that you can do it for long enough for it to matter.

Here is the thing guys.... Real simple, real effective.. 10 sets till failure with good form, 2 minute rest between sets... You do that, you don't train again until you feel recovered.... This could mean train every other day, or 2 days a week, or 1.5 days a week, whatever.... For most people twice a week works perfectly for this approach. Just make sure to eat enough protein(1.4 gram per KILOGRAM of bodyweight, not pounds, kilograms) Same approach for all the body parts. And just one exercise for each bodypart. Start with a weight that you can't do anymore than 5 reps with, over the course of weeks and months it will become a weight that you can do 20 reps with. When that happens, you have grown bigger and stronger, you can see that your muscles have increased in size.... Now you will again find a weight that you can't do anymore than 5 reps with, it will be much heavier than before this time. You use it until it's your 20 rep max and then switch to a 5rm weight again. You keep repeating this until you are big and strong enough. So as you can see, real simple real effective approach. You are asking your body to get bigger and stronger each session. You are giving it the healthy natural whole food calories to get bigger. And you are growing. Go with push pull leg split at first. It should work brilliantly.

@@ReviveStronger Well you are right. But bro not all of us are certified trainers.... And what's optimal depends on people, their circumstances, goals, age lifestyle etc, as you know it better already than I do. So listening to great podcasts like this gives us valuable tips, but they are never enough to design an "optimal" routine... So let's just focus on what type of workout allows me to gain the most performance (however minuscule, it could be gaining reps, or one rep, or even one inch of range of motion in the last rep that I keep failing at, you get the point) each week.... Let's keep all sets till failure, and let's do the number of sets that allows me to train atleast twice a week with each workout being a little better than before.... If I can gain performance each week, eventually, that heavy weight will become a light weight for me, and eventually I will get stronger, and getting stronger always always means getting bigger. For the majority of us, that's how training should be, simple..... And also we should see some performance increases each week to remain motivated. I am a guy with a 1.5 times bodyweight barbell strict press and a 3 times bodyweight deadlift, I am HUGE, I train at home, and I got here in 5 years doing things that I thought works best for me.... So I guess if you wanna train optimally you really need to be under the strict guidance of a coach. Thanks for the reply. And thanks a lot for these great podcasts.

Fatigue in the way Mike talks about it is a multi-system concept. You have muscle fatigue, CNS fatigue, psychological fatigue, connective tissue fatigue, cortisol accumulation, etc. All lifts create all of these kinds of fatigue to some degree. I think RP or Juggernaut have articles on this in more detail.
@darkdestroyer796
@darkdestroyer796 5 жыл бұрын
grannick yim fatigue is the general type of tiredness that will summate in result of loading muscles. That’s why we deload because we can’t make further progress due to fatigue.
@burner1303
@burner1303 5 жыл бұрын
@@darkdestroyer796 That's a good way to put it. It's also why Mike advocates different types of mesocycles and variation across mesocycles. Both to create a new stimulus-adaptation response and to fatigue your body in different ways so as to allow for overall better recovery. Eg, lifting lighter for higher reps one mesocycle will theoretically fatigue your tendons less and allow recovery, dropping deadlifts for lunges one mesocycle will fatigue your CNS less and allow recovery.

Honestly I can’t train til failure when there’s people around in the gym. Because very close to failure I can’t stop making big grunting moaning noises. And I look like a fking lunatic to push through like I am battling for my life lol. Not a joke. When no one’s in the gym I make all the noises I need to push myself. Literally did like 120something steps of BW walking lunges make all that noises and collapsed and crawled in the end. Usually I would probably do 20steps and call it a set. So I literally had 100RIR in me.
