Honestly if it was mine I wouldn't bother with the feeler guages in the pan its not like the pickup tube can suck them up bc of the strainer on it,and they arnt big enough to stop the flow up. Odds are you can get it out threw the oil plug anyways. But thanks for these videos, I've worked on diesels since I was a teenager and have always hurd horror stories about debris geting in the oil hole when pulling a isx head. So I've always avoided them lol but we got a guy wanting us to swap a head out for him and these videos you've made are really helpful in familiarizing with the isx,thanks

Ever heard one run with excessive gear lash? Same sound as a bad throw out bearing.
@roberttuttle59633 жыл бұрын
laughed like he&& when i seen that. cause i. did. that my self when in was checking a idler myself. sounded the same the oil. pan was full of oil. had to. drain out and took. an extention magnet went thru the oil drain hole found the feeler blade set and got it out thru the hole after that. i. put a long medium tie strap on my feeler blade set it wouldn't fit past the gears after that just a hint if you would like. when you torque the idler nuts to. 22 ft lb. mark the plate with the white marker then the bolt 1 hex back then turn the bolt and align up. the marks you made that way you have a good indacater when to. stop. thanks for the video. brought back some memories i retired from cummins engines after 40. years shop tech and road tech tmi

the lash is .010 not .004, you should also cut your feeler gauge down, they are too wide to fit between the gears without bottoming in each gear, also hit the gear(ring the gear like a bell) after torquing the bolt and retorque do that until the bolt doesnt move any more, usually take three or four times
@TerraFirmaX3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tips, but the feeler gauge did not bottom out and QSOL Spec was .004
@johanperez16892 жыл бұрын
The most important spec is probably making sure that your using the correct feeler gauge at .010" for this scissor type lower idler gear vs. The 0.004" feeler gauge for the solid type lower idler gear. Anyway i guess better late than never..... NO!!!!! GET IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!! WHO WANTS TO CRANK THE THE MOTOR AND HEAR A NICE GEAR TO GEAR VIOLENT WINDING NOISE, ALL TO BE DEMORALIZED AND NOT TO MENTION THE HEART BREAKING RE-DISSASSEMBLY!!!! THX. BUD FOR THAT SPEC CHECK!!!!

If my harmonic balancer doesn't have any visible markings how do I know where to pin the engine at the bottom

You have to sand down the balancer. The marks are there guaranteed. When you find them, mark then like I did

Think cummins requires 5 thousands lash. Looked like it had scissor gear. That needed to be unloaded. I also never use the loctite on cam gear. I use a brass drift and smack the cam gear bolt and re torque till it holds. Never had one slip. Runs quiet too.
@TerraFirmaX3 жыл бұрын
AWESOME, And I don't think, I know for a fact what Cummins called for because I got all my specs directly from Cummins. Again, Cummins also requires the use of LokTite on the camgear, Not smack it with a brass drift and torque it till it holds.
@johndavidstutts3 жыл бұрын
@@TerraFirmaX I actually replaced a gear housing on a x15 TODAY the 3rd I've done in 4 weeks. Just saying what I know, and info from QSOL. The deleted loctite is my deal. I wash gear and cam with electric parts cleaner and put it on by setting the gear with a drift. Never had a come back. I have seen a cam gear slip with the loctite. Just my two cents.
@TerraFirmaX3 жыл бұрын
@@johndavidstutts WELL, QSOL is where I got all my specs, But mine is not an X15 it's a CM 2250
@johndavidstutts3 жыл бұрын
2250 lash is 0.004 per QSOL. I got 2 gauges I use every time. Thought they were 0.005 but they are 0.004. All single cam engines are the same spec. Not arguing, just saying. Good luck

You are supposed to unload the bottom gear set your backlash for 10 thousands and your end result is 4 thousands between your top 3 gears after you reload the bottom gear
@TerraFirmaX4 жыл бұрын
hmmmm. I don't remember reading that on Cummins, I could be wrong
@earvingmoscoso95084 жыл бұрын
Was wondering if he did that. Also depends. If your lower idler gear is a scissor gear yes, if it's a solid gear then no.
@feedsmithy3 жыл бұрын
Aaah, maybe this is late, but he does it %100 correctly. 2x 4 thou feeler gauges. 10 thou was the old spec, but it gave to much gear train noise, so they went down to 4 thou! Great job guys!
