19 LB THUNDEREGG - What's Inside? Slabbing GIANT Thundereggs

KatyDid ROCKS!

KatyDid ROCKS!

2 жыл бұрын

Kate tries out her new rock saw blade to slab a pair of enormous thundereggs she picked up at the Polkadot Agate Mine near Madras, Oregon. Thundereggs are geodes, formed with rhyolite, quartz and many other minerals. The eggs from the Polkadot thunderegg bed are unusually large, and spectacularly beautiful. Come along and see what's inside!

Kate, the design inside those is amazing. Shows what an incredible artist mother nature is. I couldn't help but think what the conditions must have been like when those were forming eons ago! PS: Looks like you have some rather impressive tomatoes hiding behind you at the end (it's been a good year for them... and peppers, :-)).

The thundereggs from there are unique for sure. The Mrs Jaws Jr and I had the opportunity to go there shortly after this newly discovered bed was announced to the public under the old operator. There is a video of it in my channel. This stuff is difficult to cut due to all the fractures throughout. The internal agate it typically stable with few fractures. What you have cut with the polkadot agate, you will get some incredible cabochons from it. Now unfortunately, I cannot go back until one person that is associated with the property (land ownership and former operator) is no longer associated with it. I cannot go into details on why in a public forum, but ethically and morally, we cannot go back. Also when we were there, there was some black thundereggs that were in the layer above the large ones, I collected some out of the overburden piles. Look forward to seeing all the cabochons you make from these!!! Maybe a winter project.

Oh you're so blessed to have had a father interested in rocks and minerals. I used to get in so much trouble ruining my dad's hammers and the concrete floor in our garage breaking rocks to see what was hidden inside them. I never got the opportunity to slice any of the beautiful stones I found. We lived in NE Arkansas, but when we visited my grandmother and aunt in Little Rock, AR I would find some amazing rocks...just a lot of different quartz and some smaller geodes. But my family did not share in my obsession with rocks and bugs too! Every summer I would have to throw out my treasures before we went home. And wouldn't be able to take home the beautiful treasures found in Little Rock ever. And what a shame that is. I don't have any pretty rocks, but I have throughout my life picked up a rock to remind me of special events, places dear to my heart, people dear to me that are no longer in this life, and every time I left a nursing job I would pick up a rock on my way out. so I have rocks that to me tell my life story. I hope to get buried with them. Why not? I can't take them with me, but without anyone that cares about my life story since I couldn't have children and the ones I helped to raise no longer come around. I might as well let whoever throw them away with me where they belong. Back to the earth we go! Until Jesus returns then I will not be with them anymore.

Giday Kate, those thunder eggs are something else, even the slab that broke near the beginning was still a great piece. Compelling video, I could look at the intricacies in those slabs for hours. WOW!!!! I just found your channel. I just subscribed, I'm also subbed to the other channels you have listed. You answered a question I've asked, cutting multiple nodule thundereggs. I noticed, that you don't go with the long-axes of the rock (like with a double) or the "seams" (like in a single). You're doing slabs to see if it'll open up a crystal cavity? It's different from cutting a single, you're going for totally different results, yes?

Awesome vid! I wonder if you could take slices with the void in the center and somehow make picture frames from them? If the slice was thin enough, you could back light it. I know you can get pictures printed on glass these days, so maybe the back lighting would even look cool through the picture??

I am neutral. It cuts smoothly, but I feel like it gets bound up easier than my old blade. The kerf may be narrower, which might have more to do with it than the segments. I’ll probably try to find a solid blade next time.
