Sounds strong and the video speaks for itself, Mike. Would love to build an engine with you and learn. I’ve done plenty of top Eng rebuilds, but never split a case. Perhaps I could do a Working holiday over in California 😂 I had Steve Houston in Chico Build me a 1914cc motor about ten years ago and ship it over to the UK. Still going strong, but I’d like to stroke it. Defo some of the most technically interesting videos on KZbin by any aircooled enthusiast are coming from you mike. Keep them coming. Ben 🇬🇧

I can understand you're proud of your baby. And I've owned, even rebuilt a couple vw engines in my day. In 1966 I had a split window rag top sunroof van. But I have to chuckle at your response's as if you're driving a 427 Cobra. But you did put a lot of hard work it to it.

say mike... pull the idle jet and figure out what size it is.. find some bigger idle jets and start swapping up one size at a time .. you will have to readjust the idle mixture possibly each time but that should only take you seconds to do. you won't believe how different the idle will be and the low end power will be totally different.. once you get the idle jet changed.. since you increased the displacement you need to go to larger main jet one size at a time. do the idle jet first.. once you get that perfect.. then start playing with the main jet sizing. .

Thanks for your videos. I have a 67 that Im going to have benco build a trans for. I have a 2276 turbo but I think I am going to build a "thick wall" smaller displacement motor with aa heads and small cam. Forged pistons. That bus runs well. Cars have a "soul" and some run great and some never run great. Thats a good one..

I guess I’m going to have to look into the trans gearing. I had a buddy build a ‘cb’ 78x90.5 for me and it is unimpressive with my current setup other than sounding great. I want to keep my rb’s. I’m running Vredestein 205-70/15s though for the stock height.

now this made me decide which motor to build, so its a 74 stroke with 88 thick walls
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
that would be a good one but it is 74 x 90.5 with that carb and the web 86 cam and ratio rockers it is a great combination.
@bubot174 жыл бұрын
@@Mikefngarage is it ok to use 90.5 barrels on the thicker engine studs, that is my reasoning why i'm going with the 88 thickwalls

Been geeking out on the build video's and I watched the 2007cc bullet proof first drive video before this one. You were like...it's cool and it moves, but you seemed kinda meh...it's a bullet proof build..it's what I expected. Then you get into the 74 stroker and were really pumped. I think I'll go with the 74 for my build. It would be nice to see a rolling pull to 70mph between the two buses as a comparison.
@Mikefngarage2 жыл бұрын
small difference in power but 74 gets 22mpg with that smaller carb. 2007 gets less than 20. 2007 is built to last long miles. 1904 may not last as long but still will last pretty long.

That's a weird combo on that 1776 hUGe cam & small heads? Next eng, video replace heads on the 1776 with some nice ported duel ports.
@Mikefngarage4 жыл бұрын
it already had that cam in it. Bought a locked up engine and the bottom end was brand new. got lucky. so all I had was some single port stuff so I put new pistons and cyls on it. Just ran the cam because it was new and had matching lifters. not for performance. would probably need 10 to 1 compression for that cam to work well.

Do you have stock BIG NUT reduction boxes on this bus? You should pick up one of the performance apps for your phone. It will allow you to get real numbers to compare setups.

What is the biggest displacement I can go to and keep my heater boxes?
@Mikefngarage3 жыл бұрын
you could go 1968 which is a 74 stroker. Big flange exhaust extractor. But the issue is you will not have full horsepower for the engine size. Stock valves would be the key. I could have run this with heater boxes but engine runs cooler and better with merged exhaust. Better exhaust flow. I am making my own heater boxes that clam on the exhaust. they dont work as well. but do work on a long trip. Also they make heater boxes that are oversized. 1.5 inch. and an exhaust system for that. Super expensive route and not as good heat as original. Again they do not flow as good as the merged. I ran an 1835 for many years without merged and had heater boxes. But the flange would get WHITE. from the heat. if you go with the larger flange exhaust it will help.

@@Mikefngarage DoI infer that a 1776 might be a good compromise?

@@GeorgeMummertdotcom check my playlists. I have 3 of them 74 stroker, extreme budget build, bulletproof engine build. If you watch all 3 plus have a manual I think you can muster your way thought the build. be sure the case is good. The prices of parts are a bit high. So I wouldnt recommend doing a practice build it can cost some serious money.

Just getting into VW’s. Do the buses require a transporter engine?

starting at 68 they need mustache bar holes in the case. 73 and later need type 4 or type 1 conversion kit.
