What's interesting is that when you put it in black and white, the look suddenly looked very soft and very effective. Given that most photography was still black and white at that point, and films were still in black and white - it definitely feels like the makeup was designed to be effective for photography and motion pictures.

This was definitely not everyday women's makeup, it was for theater and to show their features on screen. All the images of movie stars are not what most of our great, great grandparents would have worn.
@CatrionaCharles Жыл бұрын
That's what it was for. It was found that facial features didn't really show up on film so they developed this exaggerated technique with bold colours and lines which was the only way they'd show up on camera. In an everyday setting women wouldn't wear makeup like this.

I think the most telling thing about this look is how it is in black-and-white. Rather than looking as vivid, it looks more like natural shadows, and is even quite subtle (except for the lips, brows, and lashes, but those were probably considered the most important when it came to film due to how expressive they are). Even the bright red rouge looks like a natural contour in black and white!

From what I've heard, the over the top colors or sometimes heavy, dark make-up also had to do with film. Movies, photographs,... were all in black and white. And a lot of make up, especially lighter colors, simply doesn't show in black and white. So in order to see it on film, they had to use pretty heavy, bold make up.

My great grandma was a flapper girl. I remember as a young girl (in the 1980s) and teenager (1990s) I could sit and listen to her talk about the 20s, 30s & 40s all day long. We would sit and look at photos of her from those time periods, literally one of the few happy childhood memories. My favorite story was her "love at first sight" story of meeting my great grandpa, they both fell in love at first sight, it was a beautiful love story! I'd love a decades series, especially if you'd do a Lucille Ball inspired look for the 40s or 50s. I also love Erin's collection, the packaging for vintage makeup fascinates me.

Make-up wasn't like that, that's just an artistic drawing. Regular make-up in the 20's was intended to be VERY natural and you wouldn't use any type of eyeliner. Only movie stars would accentuate their eyes like that and it was only for the cameras to get their features, so it was only cinema and theatre make-up. So your granny would probably wear just a bit of powder. It wasn't so difficult to get the fashionable face as it is today, it was mostly the hair that was difficult.

I think the eyebrows and the lip really, really works. Looks gorgeous - and if the blush were lighter and with different eyeshadow could totally be a great look in modern times.

i find it v interesting how much of the tutorials is based on truly bringing out natural beauty and complementing your natural colouring, obviously there were still v blatant beauty standards, but with regards the things like the long dramatic eyebrows being to highlight your expressions and the eyeshadow colouring being to complement the colouring of your hair and eyes as opposed to very strict distinct styles we have now

I love this "series!" It would be cool if you could do a second half of "modernizing" the look, maintaining the "focus" of the period, but maybe changing colors or toning down aspects.

I used to use Max Factor pancake makeup in the 70’s and early 80’s. It actually was better coverage than you would think. It dried into a powder and was great for my very oily skin. I think it’s still sold in some overseas countries.

I loved the antiek makeup look. It reminds me of movies from the 1920s and while I'm recovering from my 6th major spinal fusion, my last one was on December 30, 2021 which has been hard to recover from. That's why I enjoy watching your videos, I don't feel very attractive after everything I have been through, so I watch your videos while I am having to lay still while I run my bone stimulator for 2 hours every. It has given me the confidence to put some makeup on, I really like your passion for make up, even for those who can't afford the expensive brands, you explain that some drug store or more affordable brands work just as if not better than the expensive ones. I appreciate your honesty! Sincerely, Ashley Harper

I actually want to try this now, but everything with softer lines, so to speak (and without falsies, because I don't have them). Sometimes I forget that make-up is just having fun and trying out a bunch of stuff instead of getting a "perfect" look. I actually went to a 20's party once and although my brows where too bushy for this, it looked really fun! I didn't know about the blush back then, so I really want to try that :)

It’s so weird how well this look works. I had no idea the colours were so vibrant. Actually, the pale base with the boldness of the rouge reminds me of makeup worn in Chinese opera, which I also like the look of.

I love this so much! I've always loved the bizarre eyes and eyebrows of the 1920s, it's so cool to see it brought to life! Fun fact: cameras during this time couldn't really pick up red, so movie actresses would have to wear almost black makeup to have it show up. That is why makeup in many photographs looks so dramatic compared to in illustrations.

I'd love to see a "modern" version of this! Following the same guidelines but using modern products and tweaking things a little here and there.

I was worried about the blush at first, but with the whole look together, I feel like the 20’s should make a comeback in makeup trends, albeit with more freedom from the tutorials of the day.

I could never with the whole look, I honestly don't wear that much makeup to begin with, but ngl I'm kinda living for the lip shape. That beestung shape is probably the best thing to come from that time period makeup wise.

So excited for this series. I want the whole gambit!!! And I’d also love to see a re-do with you taking what you liked and making a more modern version of each look. Super fun watching the transformation to the antiek version of Nikki. And learning all the cool historical facts from Erin. Much love.

I actually use blush like this - under the eyes. It really helps me cover dark circles. Of course the colour is much lighter and paler On the cheek apples, a little under the eyes and blending to the temples For me it works perfect

I would honestly try the "antiek" lips and rouge (though less intense). Could you perhaps also present the colours to pick if you have brown/green eyes so we can learn from that? :D
@Ciritual2 жыл бұрын
Back then they wore colours that matched their eye colours :) So green = green, blue = blue, and if you had brown eyes they used a sheer charcoal/grayish black and on rare occasions an eggplant purple could be found! Hope this helps! :)
