its good material i use it for all my head/ignitor gaskets

To clean up the inside of the gasket I would use a drum sander on the drill press. It should give you a nice clean edge

Maybe a round file can clean up the openings. Good Luck!

not that my experience is with old gas engines but refrigeration compressors. They have those grooves on some of the exhaust valve. They use plain paper gaskets and hold pressure exceeding 300 psig.
