I’ve owned and played a 1927 PB Granada converted to a 5 string in 1973 with a Randy Wood neck, making that banjo/neck pair up 50 years old. Since I bought it in 1973 it has been played regularly and I use vintage Roger’s hide heads and it has tone and depth and the 40 hole ring and the rest of the pot is unmolested and pristine. The banjo Robbie is showcasing sounds like mine. Best tone. Period. Thanks

You ought to do a video on how to set up an arch top correctly to maximize tone and clarity and minimize twangyness. As an arch top owner who didn't know the difference when I bought mine, I'd be very interested. What a GREAT sounding banjo !

Great point on the misconceptions regarding archtops. Even a tin ear can hear that that open 4th string sounds better than most flatheads.

I have a '29 Mastertone archtop with a Robin Smith ( Bela Fleck , Noam Pikelny builder/fitter ) neck, so I know it started out pretty decent, my first 'serious banjo ' I really love it,. It spent some time touring so it has an electric pickup type of head, which I was going to swap out for purity reasons, but decided to keep it because of the growing number of songs I've written on it, companioning my Les Paul. Now I'm dying of curiosity concerning setting it up more like a flat top!

Great pickin' and a great old fat sounding banjo there Robby! I have a Gibson bow-tie with a 40 hole ring in it, set up like a flat head and it sounds a whole lot like the 29 Granada in your video....very close. You can get a rich sound out of a good archtop if you set it up right.

I think a lot of people don't realize that Dr. Ralph picked his banjo way way down on the bridge, making it sound even more percussive and tight than the banjo normally would have.

I hear audio samples of these old Gibson banjos a lot. They are examples of good banjo sound. The current day upperline Deering banjos are as good or better. The cost of a Deering is less than these great old Gibsons, too.
