This is the standard issue WW2 emergency MRE issued to all British soldiers deployed in combat. Used only when no other means of sustenance is procurable. A dense chocolate bar enriched with caffeine and vitamins. Designed to sustain a soldier for up to 24 hours.

How did I miss this one? Steve's description is spot on as the emergency ration isn't a chocolate bar in the conventional sense (or even the American sense). It is basically compressed sugar and cocoa. The cocoa, as well as giving some flavour, was intended to line the stomach to make you feel fuller.

Back in the mid 90's I used to hit the Army surplus store for MREs to take on hiking trips in the Boy Scouts. I thought they were just the coolest thing with the chemical heaters and everything small and individually packed. I need to go root in my parents storage see if I have one of those MREs hanging out. Do you know which chocolate manufacturer made it? It could have been Cadburys, Mackintosh, Rowntree, Fry's, Terry's. All gone, bar Cadbury's, whose quality dropped noticeably after Kraft bought them out.

Mackintosh still exists and if not mistaken, still makes toffee, at least in Canada. (I don't speak for chocolate, but I could swear I saw Mackintosh toffee just recently at the store.

I'm glad to hear that Mackintosh still exists in some form. In the UK, it was amalgamated with Rowntrees, and then vanished into the gaping corporate maw of the Nestlé company (known here as 'Nestles', as in 'Nestles Milkybar' for many, many years). And fascinating that Bovril produced chocolate in the war years. I only thought that they made meat products using the Liebig process. Very interesting indeed. Thanks.

Cadburys are still working on the heat resistant chocolate products so I doubt it's them in this case. Out of curiosity are you saying you think Dairy Milk actually tastes different now?
