I worked as an airman in Titan II missile silos from 1978 to 1982. They had stacks of WWII rations on the downstairs level near our equipment. We used to break into it and eat occasionally. It was dated 1945.

The 'nutty' smell is probably walnut, which was used to extend ground coffee beans in '42. The Germans were doing a pretty credible job of interdicting a significant portion of the freighters traveling up the West Atlantic coast and many of the ships they sank were carrying coffee. With much of the male population getting drafted and industry ramping up, US coffee consumption went through the roof and the US had almost no native sources of coffee beans. As a wartime economy measure, in '42 and '43, it was necessary to use walnut and hazelnut husks to stretch the coffee bean supply. I have no proof that B rations were issued with 'nut-coffee' but my grandmother often told stories about how the coffee 'wasn't right' until about '44 or so. As a historian, I noted that story and compare it to the U-boat offensive along the US and S. America Atlantic coasts. By 1944, with advances in ASDIC/SONAR and increased shipbuilding, the U-boat threat had been greatly reduced.

I was in the Army 66-69 and had the regular WWII field "C" rations every time we were in the field. They came in what I would describe as a packed small OD shoe box. Each box had a number of tins. I am trying to remember. There was always a main tin of something like ham & beans, beef, stew, or ham & lima beans. Each box had a tin of something like Boston bread or crackers & jam. Instant coffee, cream, tea, sugar, candy and whatever. Small Tabasco sauce bottles were always around. Every box had the P38 can opener and a small pack (6) cigarettes with matches. There was generally a generic metal trash can around that had water on the bottom and we put on a camp fire for a "hot" meal. The rations came in a large box with the individual ration boxes we frequently busted all of it open on to a poncho and threw the stew, beans, lima beans into the trash can of hot water and you just picked out what you wanted or what was left. Maybe we were hungry, but even though they were then over 20 years old; they were good... That was a long time ago...

so does that mean in retrospect that current canned food has the same shelf life? how long can you stretch that by best date?
@i-am-your-conscience6 жыл бұрын
We did a whole show around this topic in Germany, to prevent people from throwing away stuff at the "best before" date.. They have eaten a lot of canned stuff, and all cans that werent bloated, were okay. Sometimes tasty, but most of the time bland, as they seem to loose the flavour over time but not the edibility.

When I was in college in the early 1970's, the dorm that I lived in was also had a designated fall out shelter in the basement. So one Sunday afternoon, me and a couple friends decided to check it out. On the entrance, it said Capacity 3000! Inside along one wall were several hundred 55 gallon barrels marked 'potable water', 'biscuits', 'rations' and 'medical'. The dates on the barrels were from the Korean War era! It was a huge basement, probably several hundred feet long and probably 60 feet wide but there is no way that 3000 people could stay in there for several weeks or months. Also, I did not see a single bathroom!

I was on a WW2 gun cruiser converted to a guided missile cruiser in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The cooks were terrible. A void had to be opened, had a bolted hatch, for repairs by the welders. It was discovered to be a storeroom with lots of c-rations in very good condition. Most of the crew was grabbing them and eating them, contents still as good a new. The captain got pissed until someone pointed out to him how bad the food would have to be for the crew to be eating 20+ years old c-rations. The galley food improved after that.

I was in the 82d Airborne from 1980 to 1984. My best friend "Mudbone" had a very weak stomach. Every time we went up for a jump he would throw up. If we passed and smelled a dead animal he would throw up. One day we were in the field, at a rifle range, and had a C ration lunch for that day. We got our C ration and I had chicken boned with gravy meal. Mudbone and I were sitting under a tree and I took a spoonful of the chicken boned and felt something unusual in my mouth. I pulled out an entire chicken beak from my mouth. I showed it to Mudbone and proceeded to suck the juice out of it. I bet, to this day, he is still throwing up thinking about that lunch! He started puking all over the place that day. It worked out great for me though because while he was too sick to finish eating I got his can of peaches!
