When I was in the New Zealand Army in about 1969 we got one of two Ration Packs when we were on a field exercise. 1 .... a Fresh RP from the Mess Hall. ( piece of steak, potato, onion,rice etc) or #2 .... A British ww2 Rat Pack similar to the one you opened. I used to swap some of my stuff I didn't like, or couldn't be bothered cooking, for other guys biscuits. Most guys didn't like the biscuits, they were like a hard rusk. I liked that I could carry them in a shirt pocket, and snack any time when i was in the field. Broke a couple of dental fillings though.
@josephlupus87985 жыл бұрын
Were they considered to be like hard tack?
@HydroSnips3 жыл бұрын
Hahaha, British Army hard tack was legendary. In WW1 soldiers had hard tack that was made twenty years earlier and tinned. They used to have to soak it in water (or bacon fat) to bite a bit off and still a fair number lost teeth to it. Another thing was to pound it to pieces with a bayonet hilt or pistol butt to make chunks/flour that they could throw into a stew of tinned meat and veg. They had thousands of the bloody things too - I heard a (possibly apocryphal) story that in one underground dugout they laid biscuits down on the bare earth to make a solid floor :D

I personally think that the "fruit bars" are so good after they age because the sugars in the fruit ferments, much like the sugars in wine turning to alcohol. So it's sweeter and probably somewhat better than when it was new. Know what I mean? Nice.

It's humbling to know that, during the war, British citizens living in Great Britain had to endure rather severe food rationing and they did it with that famous "stiff upper lip" resolve the British are so famous for. Sugar was essentially unavailable and substitutes challenged cooks nationwide. But, I think it's safe to assume that except for really down days for a small percentage of them, they didn't complain because that sugar was for "Our boys" in uniform and they knew they would need those very sugar and carb boosts the entire program was about. As an aside, the entire nation of non-military personnel got healthier! They had fewer digestive complaints, lost weight, blood pressures down (even with getting "blitzed" in the later months!), fewer heart attacks and so on. But, after the war was over and the supply chains were re-established (which took years, btw), the average Brit went right back to their old beloved self-destructive ways ; ) Like anyone would after years of such restrictions.

Whenever I watch these I always think about how many pilots or soldiers survived being shot down or lost or cut off from their lines because they had a can or two of this stuff with them. Such cool pieces of history.

These video's are entertaining enough to get me through the nights without having to use crummy syndicated reruns on dish network at night and especially minimal use rehabbing from a full hip replacement posterior method
