1947 American Pexto 925 Tinsmith & Blacksmith - Blowhorn Stake Anvil Restoration.
Hi friends. I prepared an Amerikan made Pexto No. 925 Tinsmith & Blacksmith Blowhorn Stake Anvil restoration for you. I think such a piece is common in the U.S. But coming across this piece in Europe is surprising. I came across this one accidentally and bought it. This is the first time that I buy something and then immediately restore it. So we can understand from that, I loved this piece. I hope you also love it. Let’s start the restoration. As can be seen, it has been painted 4 times. I tested for the lead before taking the paint out. The outer layer didn’t have lead in it, but the inner layers did. So I was cautious. I sandlbasted after. I saw the marks after sandblasting, the paint covered them before. The marks and the letters were messed up before. The lower part was not in good shape due to wear over the years. First, I completely restored the stake part with files and sandpaper. This part wasn’t heat-treated so it was nice and easy. But I needed to use Argon welding on two places and the corner, they needed extra material to build up where deformation was. After that, I tested the horns for the hardness and it came up around 40-45 HRC, which we can say is a normal hardness. I used a bit more force and sandpaper on those areas. I smoothed the horns as well the same way. I used many different files and sandpapers. After the filing, I used sandpaper between 40-2000 grits before polishing. And after the polishing I got a mirror-like surface on it. I would say, it would be possible to shave yourself on that surface. This anvil is made up of the pieces. As the horn and the stake. Right where they meet, is an original weld made from the factory. I didn’t touch up that area. Because it seems aesthetic and nice. I cold blued the bottom of the half-round horn and where the weld is, and used steel wool on those after. It gained a nice old look from that. I always say that you should check the description for more but there will be more in the video. You are going to have a great time of 14 minutes. Have fun watching. See you until the next project. After researching this anvil, I got the technical data about it from the original product catalog. I want to share those with you. American measurings: Length of large and, 9 in. Lenght of small and, 18 in. Diameter of small end at wide pointi 1 ½ in. Diameter of small end at narrow point 5/8 in. Diameter of large and at wide point, 4 ¾ in. Diameter of large and at narrow point, ½ in. Weight, 14 lbs. Each, $25.00

What is the purpose of the bluing if it's just going to be sanded off? Or does bluing penetrate a little below the surface as well, to prevent rust?

Ok, I understand why. He did it to get an even coating, then sanded off the areas he wanted to keep shiny. Easier to coat the whole thing than try to tape off the sections and have it bleed through.

@@mikenowland2739 Sometimes you decide something. but you can't be sure. because there will always be different versions. After sandblasting, I immediately bluing. After bluing, I immediately wash the product with cold water. There should be bluing everywhere to prevent rusting. The edges of the areas I polished are not sharp. So there is no clear border. There is an original source. The original source is full of holes. I can say more things. But translate got tired.

Amazing result! I'd say perfect, except that you made no attempt to clean up that glaring ugly weld. I am surprised by that and a bit disappointed.
