Well, I'm glad you posted this, I have tried to find something on my 1952 kiekhaefer 5hp super 5 Mercury since I need to not only go over carburetor, but think some linkage is missing, and need to do complete check of this, it hasn't run in over 5 years now, had it running 1 time partial choke, and wouldn't restart, so I need to get all info I can on this motor, to get it back up and running ,.

Did you see anything wrong in this rebuild? So hard to start on the water

@@ADDvancedTo be fair, I haven't ran the motor on the water since the late 90's. I filled up a trash bucket with water but even still I don't think I had the prop attached. I cleaned up the original cork float but nothing I can think of as far as the carb goes compared to yours. It has trouble with the fuel shutoff valve not stopping the fuel from draining out of the tank through the carb. Not sure if there's a seal missing but from what I can find on the internet, I don't see one listed in the literature. It was always a bit of a scary moment pulling that thing over when I was a kid as I was too young to start it without putting my foot on the gas tank but a couple of quick pulls and it fired up and I never fell out.

Hope it helps! Mine runs great out of the water, but I can't get it to start once the prop is in the water

I cant wait to see a sheet of ply wood fly across a lake at 50mph! If that thing does what they say they do, then I'll be building one.

Normally they are 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 turns to start with so I would start there

@@ADDvanced yea I have a 1958 Johnson seahorse 3 hp and that’s where I started and it worked good place to start did not have to do much more after that and it started right up then just a little adjusting after it started so good luck 👍

Close shut the mix screws, blackout 3 1/2 turns is a good start.

Tillotson still makes carbs for go kart racing.

The last time you showed this motor, you were having problems with the rope starter recoil mechanism. What was the cause of the problem? Thanks.

Gas tank had to be on the engine, so the pawls could engage the splined nut on the top of it. Without it, they over extend and jam. Oops.

Looks like you destroyed that bowl. That thing in the middle probably sealed it to make it float. I could be wrong.
@ADDvanced3 жыл бұрын
Nah it was a plastic sleeve. The float is coated foam.
