When I was in High School I had a '49 hearse with a flathead 346 and a three on the tree, with a Hess and Eidenhart body and cast iron curtains! I love it. Thumbs up. I'm older now, with nothing but boring stories or glory days (Springsteen).

i had the chance in 1984 to buy a pearl white 1962 Cadillac Hearse with 6,000 miles on it for $600 it was Showroom condition. only problem it reeked of formaldehyde

When I was in college in the 1980s, one of my classmates had a 1950 Miller Cadillac Hearse that he used as a daily driver. Damn that was a big car. Just for kicks, he even got an empty casket to carry around in the back. FYI: some very fine steel wool (or an SOS pad) really works well on removing rust from chrome and nickel plated bright work. Don’t even need any chemicals.

Wow, that Caddy has so much character! This body style has a much cleaner look and won't scream hearse when going down the road like many of it's contemporaries. It has more of a custom cruiser look to it, that will be one sweet ride.

My dad owned a funeral home. He had a 1957 Caddy hearse and when he finally replaced it in the mid 1970's he gave it to me. It was immaculate, a real beauty and this was in the desert so not a spec of rust anywhere. I think I sold it for $300.00. Sounds horrible now but I had no place or money to store it. Of course I wish I still had it. By the way his first funeral home was incredibly haunted. When I was a very small kid I yelled at the ghosts to get them to quiet down. It was a murmuring sound as if there were people above me in the funeral chapel talking but I could never make out any words. I didn't understand that they were ghosts at the time, I just figured out that by making a lot of noise the noise would quiet down. I'd yell HEY!!! and they'd quiet down and then the murmuring would slowly start up again until it became very loud then I'd yell again. This was in the furnace room in the basement of a combination furniture store/funeral home. I loved to pull the cinders out of the furnace and when I was banging and clanging around the voices would start up. I'm sure now that I was disturbing the ghosts. The furnace room was next door to the embalming room. I never went into the funeral home part of the business alone. I never worried about ghosts while I was in the furnace room but when I went up the stairs I always felt like they were after me so I sprinted up the stairs. I'm sure I still have the speed record for those stairs. There was plenty of light in the furnace room but outside of the furnace room in the main part of the basement near the stairs there was only a very dim light bulb hanging from a wire and the light didn't reach the back of the basement so it just faded to black. If I'd known they were ghosts at the time I would have been terrified. Didn't figure it out until many years later when I heard that the building was considered possibly the most haunted building in Oregon. That was over 60 years ago now. Many years later as a young man I saw a full bodied apparition while on a ship at sea when I was in the merchant marine. He looked completely solid, I thought he was real. On the night I first joined the ship in Seattle after we were at sea he was repeatedly walking by my room which I was cleaning out. It was left a pig sty by the former occupant. He walked by so many times that I gradually became obsessed with what he was doing but I gave no indication that I saw him. I was trying to ignore him but after a couple of hours I was very angry with him mainly because I resented that I had become fixated on him so when I was finally done cleaning my room and throwing out all the trash I'd found there I followed this guy down the passageway so close on his heels that I could have reached out and touched him. I heard a voice say "he sees you" and then when he went around the corner he disappeared. There was nowhere for him to go but he was gone when I came around the corner just behind him. I ran all over the crews quarters looking for him. A few hours later when I saw my watch partner I asked him "who's the guy that walks around and around the fidley?" He was perplexed. I described the guy and what he had been doing. His eyes bugged out and he said "that's a ghost! That's the guy you replaced! He jumped overboard in a storm on our way up the Oregon coast and killed himself. He had lost his mind. He thought there were spiders crawling all over him. He had been continuously walking around in circles which I had seen him doing. A witness saw him jump off the stern end (fantail) in heavy weather. I was in his room. I had been throwing out all of his personal gear. His clothes, everything he had. Now I was sleeping in his bed but that never did bother me. I figured he was more afraid of me than I was of him. So years later when my sister told me that tour groups were ghost hunting in my dads old building I finally figured out that I'd been dealing with ghosts in there when I was a kid.

WOW! Those are some awesome stories. Probably my biggest fear are ghosts at sea. Can’t run from them. Typically I do JR ghost hunting My career as a HVAC guy I’ve been in thousands of buildings and it seems like everyone has a ghost story. I used to work in one of the Disneyland hotels on second shift. Lots of weird experiences.

@@Theoldironworkshop It's strange to say this but after the experiences I've had I don't fear ghosts. I might feel differently if I ever come across a hostile entity but that hasn't happened to me. Some of the ghosts in the basement might have been related to me because that was in a very small town where my family has been for several generations. I guess my feeling is that they fear us more than we should fear them. By the way, I have a theory about that basement and any haunted basement. I think that once a ghost is in a basement it might be sort of stuck there. Just my theory only based on my own experience. A local news team did a segment on that building being haunted and they went into the furnace room and heard the murmuring but a few years later I went in and heard nothing. I'd like to buy that building and keep ghost hunters out of there to let the ghosts stay there without being disturbed.

there used to be a used car lot in Vancouver (bc) about 1967... down by the Burrard bridge...there sat a black 1938 Packard hearse..it had a carved wooden body(rear section) and was so cool...never seen another one beautifully carved...l hope it got saved...

Vice Grip Garage has some stuff called "Shine Juice" which will help preserve the patina on the car. Plus after you use the "Shine Juice" they also sell a clear coat which can be put on to seal everything in. The clear coat can be sprayed on through a spray gun or it can applied on by sponge brush.

I use Comet for all kinds of cleaning . That Grill reminds me of a 54 Chevy ... and even a 50 and in between ... wonder if they are the same size.? Doing The clean up sucks but it is a nice body. I've used fine steel wool and Comet on rusty Chrome with pretty good success. Don't know if it will work for you but.... I'd probably shoot a couple coats of Clear satin to help protect it. But you're a metal guy.. I'm sure you know better than us what's best. Your metal crafting skills really impress me. Thanks for sharing your fun and misery.

FYI that's a Sayers & Scovill/Hess & Eisenhart coach. Built on a Cadillac long-wheelbase commercial chassis. From the firewall forward it's standard although somewhat strippo Cadillac. All the doors and the roof were fabricated by S&S, and the rear fenders are the longer ones from a 2 door Coupe DeVille. S&S was the premier American coachbuilder; they built JFK's Lincoln parade car and rebuilt it after Dallas. That 1950 has been very badly neglected but it looks like it has decent bones and would be very much worth bringing back to stock. BTW although it has the "suicide doors" it appears to have been built as a straight endloading coach without the 3 way table, Nice find and I hope to see future vids!

enjoying your application of elbow grease so far on your 'box truck'. Two callouts... steel wool on your rusty chrome (not stainless) will cut the rust faster than those plastic scrubbers and not hurt the chrome. Also, If the 50 cad firewall/cowl design is like my '56 chev cowl... there are two vents at the bottom of the cowl. My '56 had mouse nest material, leaves & sand blocking the vents that I basically used long screw drivers or coat-hangers fashioned into hooks to help clear out the cowl. I ran water from above until it basically ran clear. Lastly, I'm hoping you will be able to simply press some of the dings & dents back into basic form (hood; lower front fender sides, for example) to improve the sheetmetal to some degree without having to do major metal work which might monkey with some of the original paint/patina. I'm trying to imagine a shiny wheel of some sort on it with whitewalls, but haven't been inspired by any particular idea yet. Best wishes

Back in 1969 the band I was playing with our drummer had a 49 Caddy hearse it was in great shape especially the inside he got it from a funeral home in Cushing Ok. we could carry most of our equipment in the back including a B3 hammond lol I have great memories of that car and some of the trips we took it on just driving around on all the dirt roads and exploring when we were not playing anywhere........

@@Theoldironworkshop Man those were the days traveling around in that thing, we went through Pawnee Ok on the way to a job one night and there was a group of indians standing on the corner right next to a silver jewelry shop as we drove by in unison they raised their hands in a peace sign, lol we were rolling along with the window in front down and our hair hanging low and lots of smoke coming from the car due to the sacred magical herb smoke billowing out of the car lol we were a five piece band so there was a lot of it LOL........if I had the money id track another one down and get all fixed up, im not sure how many of the old band is still up and running I went on to play with Johnny Rivers and then into the blues scene.......thanks for the response......

You can use an SOS pad to clean up all that nickel plate, chrome and glass with. You can use it on the aluminum trim pieces as well, but you might have to repolish them afterwards.

Good old Mabel is showing signs that she may be able to come back from the dead after all . I'd think about leaving the built up section under the rear seating area , as it would give it theater style seating . Have you considered a third row seat from a SUV , something that could be folded up , out of the way or removed easily, for when you need to haul those longer items . Our sedan delivery's rear floor is done like a truck bed with stained oak flooring , Polished stainless rub strips , and access doors hinged and latched for use of the area underneath as out of sight securable storage .

This may sound odd but in my early youth I had good enough grades to be permitted to skip school to be altar boy at funerals. Then into adulthood, I worked installing burial vaults and mausoleums. I have always had a fascination with hearses and want to follow this build. Just subbed.

Once I get it actually driving, you know after full drivetrain a whole new floor, all electrical all glass Then maybe I’ll start chroming some stuff or find better originals. Hope it’s got the 331V8 in it and not the prewar flathead. My oldest brother has a 49 Sedanette that we have cleaned up for the last 35 years. 12 volt system and tire and suspension updates sure helped. We got radials on it and redid the interior and paint. This beast , once you get it rolling, will eat up the road with that long wheelbase. Good Luck and have fun. 👍😎

Well speaking of the amount of caskets/bodies that the hearse transported to their last resting place. Most of the time a funeral home isn't going to have a funeral service 5days a week yes some weeks they might have done that but they'll also have week(s) that they wouldnt have any funerals so trying to figure out that number is very hard to do bc the funeral business isn't steady. Also about the ambulance portion hearses & ambulances use to be the same vehicle prior to ambulances becoming there own unique vehicle.. My info comes from growing up in a funeral home that my great grandfather started going on almost a 100yrs ago. An he used to use his hearse as an ambulance aswell as the funeral home being the only business that someone answered the phone 24/7 in the city would recieve the calls for the fire department then relay the call to the proper people.. Loving the build tho Cadillac hearses are 1 of my favorite vehicles specially the older 1 like yours can't wait to see how your hearse looks like once you are done & what all you do to it in the process..

All hearse's in the UK have glass all round. Some have a passenger side seat in the rear next to the coffin, I guess it might be handy if the customer is travel sick. 👻 Good to see it saved. . 👍👍

00 steel wool with some dish soap is the best for cleaning chrome and polished metal. As long as its foamy it dosnt scratch.

Your best best for suspension and brake parts are going to be 3/4 ton gmc stuff. Probably engine as well. if you want reliability and easy of use. And you'll need to put 10 ply tires on it, because of the weight. it'll just grind right through anything else. I had a 1967. Miller Meteor. :)

Enjoy hearse projects, I had a pristine 1958 superior bodied hearse , also had a girlfriend who had a hearse, she played a standup bass and also dealt in vintage funeral articles. The most fun was going to yard sales with it or just normal shopping, no one parks near you 😁❤️
