@@kinghamracing ooookaaaay... then why bother with a dyno?
@kinghamracing26 күн бұрын
@@888jackflash Because we were using the dyno as a rolling road, its the perfect tool for running up a new engine or rebuilt bike, rather than riding up and down the road with traffic or round a race circuit.

A dyno is no substitute for 'real world' riding no matter what anyone who operates one says. A dyno was used here as the bike is not road legal, it probably makes about 70bhp. As for Vincents being 'the best', well perhaps when they were made but these days they are not able to compare with modern bikes due to the poor suspension and brakes. Some thirty years ago I was out riding a 1990 Harley Sportster and went into a filling station for fuel and met a guy who was delivering a recently completed Egli framed Vincent.... he told me it was the worst riding experience he had encountered in 25 years of riding. Personally I cannot understand the myth of 'classic bikes' - I've had Nortons, Triumph and BSA's and am glad I no longer use them - my Harleys are very much modified as they are, in standard form, pretty much the same in that they have this 'mystique' that is just nonsense really - just romantic nonsense repeated by people who never have or ever will actually own and try to use these things as daily transport in today's traffic. Oh just to say, my 2010 Dyna (1856cc) has 130bhp and torque and my 2006 Sportster has 100bhp and 90ftlbs... they use Avon tyres and suspension/brakes that are highly modified as wel because I find the standard H-D equipment to be almost dangerous - even for the vastly underpowered standard bikes !

I passed my motorcycle license in 1968 in France. At that time there was no motorcycle school and we had to come and introduce ourselves with our motorcycle, so we came with our motorcycle without a license. The inspector told us to leave and go around a block and watched us start, so I stuck out my right arm to turn and then the inspector didn't see me again until we got back. I passed it with my BSA 350cc. There was another guy who came with a 1,000 Vincent but the poor guy never managed to start his motorcycle so no license. 🤢It was the first time I had seen a 1,000 Vincent and it didn't leave a good impression on me but it was a magnificent engine and it was the biggest at that time.

I remember big engined Vincents and Aerials (and “Squarials” ) being for sale in the late 60’s (Exchange & Mart) for relatively very low amounts of money. I always wanted to work weekends to try to get one, but my dad wouldn’t let me as I was only 14. I still rode a mates Francis Barnet when I could though, although none of us had a licence.

That was my question too, my guess is 67 at the wheel :)

Why is the gear-changing necessary? Surely the peak power is the same in any gear?
@kinghamracing7 ай бұрын
You can't start the bike in top gear, need to start off in 1st or 2nd. We are not measuring peak power here but if we were it would be done in top gear.
@bradpotter64016 ай бұрын
I believe transmissions are the most efficient in top gear where there is no reduction through the gears. The input and output shaft are locked together and the power is not transferred through the countershaft.
@greatkingrat5 ай бұрын
When dynoing a bike (or any vehicle) you need it to be in the gear that is the closest to 1:1 ratio for a proper test. A lower gear will reduce the power figures.

We understand that you were just breaking the bike in and not looking for any numbers. JUST TELL US WHAT THE FRIGGING NUMBER WAS!
@kinghamracing6 ай бұрын
I'm not sure you understand how a dyno is used, it doesn't give HP numbers unless you make a power run, which is conducted from low revs in top gear to maximum revs at full throttle. A calculation is then made by the software and a graph showing various readings, including hp is produced. That is not what we were doing here, we were using it as a rolling road so THERE ARE NO NUMBERS. If you want to see a power run on a Vincent (with hp numbers) take a look at our other video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGKUZ6mKgceUq80si=IRkkWkvNtcEo0xr6
