Kicks self... about 25 years ago I had the opportunity to trade for a near mint 52 Mantle, would have graded a 7 maybe 8 these days... he wanted my stack of Old Judge cards (no hall of famers) five complete sets of 75 topps (Brett's in mint condition) and about 30 Brett rookie cards conditions from very fine to nm... plus $1,000 I didn't have the cash.. As an example you could say Stan Musial’s topps rookie card was the 58 all-star card but no one would say it’s his topps rookie card it’s just his topps first card. I agree he is a little low on a few of these, they probably could go for more. But the one thing we all know about selling and buying, is retail price. Very rarely will you actually get full market retail price for anything much less sports cards. In other words, like Pawn Stars, the buyer/seller has to make money also, so they won't give you $12,000 for a card worth $12,000. Plus these are ungraded so the appraiser is only speculating what they would be worth if graded. Grading is in the eye of the beholder, meaning one graders 6 might be a 4 or an 8, obviously the 4 worth less the 8 worth more. Regardless thank you very much for posting this I enjoy all of the "sports" and comic book related items that show up on Antiques Road Show. Happy Collecting!

Given this important fact, the 1951 Bowman card stands as the only true rookie card. Some claim that because 1952 was the year Topps produced a flagship set 9 and it's Mantle's First Topps Card (FTC) that somehow this translates to it being a rookie card. Because it was his first Topps card, it is referred to as a "Rookie" card without it being his rookie card.

How can this guy be considered an expert when he does not know the 1952 is no Mickey Mantles Rookie card. His rookie is 1951 bowman.
@LateNiteBreaks Жыл бұрын
The 51 Bowman maybe his first Bowman but collectors see 1952 Topps as the rookie, because that's his first Topps card. That coupled with the story that they were thrown on a garbage barge in the Atlantic.

why do they say this is a Mickey Mantle Rookie card? It is not a rookie card. There is only ONE true Mantle rookie card, and that is the 51 Bowman!

Lol my Grandpas mom gave all his cards away when he went to college. Most of his cards were from the 40s and 50s. He had a few older Ruth's and several Williams and Mantle rookies. I've seen him get upset one time...and it when he told me that story.

If I had collected baseball cards, I would have said to my parents point blank, "Throw away my cards and I will not only put you in the worst nursing home that I can find, but I will also alter your will and have control over all of your money and possessions". Let them recover from the shock of that statement.

Now that Mantle is worth about 140k

And this was before the Mantle rookie sold for over $5 million. Also just a little before baseball cards skyrocketed in 2019/2020. That card would likely be worth double whatever he estimated at this point... maybe more.

Woo.. guessed on the nose the estimators grades. Lots of eye appeal on that Mantle with the strong yellow, but the top and side off center very noticeable. Would be a literal crime if it got trimmed and hustled as a raw possible 8 or 9.

Comments are so angry about how "off" his estimates are. Guys please remember this was filmed in 2017-18 before you spam eBay sales totals from the last few weeks. Comparing values from 3-4 years ago to current sales does not compute.

Sadly, the card and comic book market is based on speculation. It's difficult at best to know what one or the other will bring months, let alone years down the road. That being said, the market is fun, it's alive, and will continue to grow. At what rate, is hard to say, but the experts are convinced it's a worth while venture. I, personally, like the sports collectibles market more than the card market.
