I noticed your rotor is rotated to facing up when you were setting the point gap. Is this necessary to keep the tractor in time? Or can you set the point gap with the rotor at any position? I've got a TO30 that my great grandpa bought brand new in 1952. Getting ready to replace the points, and this will be the first time I've done something like it. Just trying to make sure I do it correctly!

So cool! A family heirloom. There are 4 lobes (bumps) on the distributor shaft that open the points. You want to rotate the engine until the points are at maximum opening and the plastic piece is sitting at the highest point of one of those lobes.

I have a t020 but I believe it has the t030 motor z129 any idea if the ignition coil is a 6 or a 12v? I couldn't read the writing on old one and replaced it with a 6v coil that said 12v with external resistor which i haveva 12 v battery with a resistor but always dies and backfires not sure if the issue could be wrong voltage on the ignition coil. It does have a resistor connected between the key ignition and coil

I think that the TO20s have a z120 engine with the oil filter in the oil pan and the TO30s have a z129 with the an external oil filter. 6v coils can be used on a 12v system with a resistor. So If your coil has about 1.5 ohms of resistance you’ll need to use the resistor with it but if it has about 3 ohms then no resistor is needed. Backfiring sounds more like an ignition timing issue.

Too bad no one shows how to gauge the points instead of replacing them with inferior parts.
@Toolingabout3 ай бұрын
It’s a 72 year old machine bud, you think it’s got the original points in it? the points have been “replaced with inferior parts” many many times. And either way you have to set the gap. Set the follower on the tip top of a lobe and adjust the gap to .022”

I own a 1954 to30. I will crank but it just doesn’t start completely. I was wondering if there is anything you recommend doing?
@Toolingabout2 жыл бұрын
I would start by checking for spark, likely it’s not getting spark due to a bad cap/rotor or coil
@quixkTV2 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks. I’ll be working on it tomorrow so that’s what I’ll check first. I’m also new to engines do what would the cap/rotor or coil be.

@@quixkTV cap and rotor are the first two things that I remove. The points (@0:50) are probably even more likely to be the problem. They can be cleaned.
