In this video we fit the distributor and actually get it going and go for a short drive.
When I tell you to turn the distributor at around 9.12 I say to retard go clockwise. That is WRONG you will need to go anti clockwise to retard the ignition.

Thank you so much for this video. I just replaced the points on my te20 to electronic points, Powerspark Electronic Ignition Kit for Lucas D3A4 Distributor Positive Earth (K33pp). The reason to do the switch to “point less” is the high humidity here in Denmark most of the year. Often the old points did not work well. Any way you trick with the screwdriver in flywheel and rotating the distributor worked very well using a multimeter connected to the ground and the input side on the coil. Easy to measure when the distributer was in the right position!

A bit of trivia! The petrol motor in the Fergy was used in the Vanguard Spacemaster, a sporty sedan sold in the 1950s in Australia and probably South Africa and New Zealand, but also in the sport Morgan 4+4 a rather snazzy sports 2 seater beyond the reach of most 18 Year olds of the day. Hey Lance, you could probably hot up the old girl with a couple of SU carbs and some super grade petrol!!!! You could probably plough an extra acre per day with the improved performance. Steve the ever hopeful young mechanic!!!

Hi Lance ! Thank-you for all your useful videos . I am busy restoring a TED20 , just now , and have rebuilt the engine with new liners and pistons , so it is quite tight . I have got to the stage of trying to engage the starter with the ring gear , but although it spins , it does not engage . On taking the starter out again , it looks like instead of engaging , it is damaging the teeth on the ring gear . I am just a novice at this , so would appreciate your advice , to get my resto back on track , Thanks in the meantime , Ted .

Hi, Great Video. I bought a kit online(leads, spark plugs, points, cap and coil) as the tractor would be going fine then just start coughing and spluttering. Could you tell me Is your wire from the ignition key going to the + or - on your coil? I have a positive earth also. Also I have allot of slop in the distrubutor cam shaft, so much so that when adjusting housing to get test light to show, the points lobe is pushing the shaft around with it. Im thinking now this could be the root of my problem? I notice a couple of springs below the points cover to recenter cam shaft. Maybe these have lost there spring. Could you shed some light on this... am i barking up the right tree?
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 6 жыл бұрын
If you are running a positive earth system the positive terminal on the coil goes to the points and the negative goes to the ignition switch. The distributor slop can be a problem but I have found that opening the points to say 0.025" does help it a little. I have a video on restoring your distributor here somewhere .

Hi just a question. I have a Ferguson ted20. I have been able to get it going from watching your videos as I am a newbie to it all and has been very helpful. I have given my Dynamo to someone I know that can recondition them and he asked if it was positive or negative earth. How would I know as when I had it it never had no battery on and had new battery terminals on the leads so I just put it on with the negative terminal to the lead that was earth out on the chassis of the tractor. It all works but not sure if it was a positive earth but how else would I know which way round the earth is? Thanks Ed
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 4 жыл бұрын
You can re polarise a generator but originally they were positive earth but if you want to run any modern equipment neg earth is the way to go.
@eddiejones3068

Bundy, I don't know where my rotor was pointing when I took my distributor off. You don't mention in the video that there are actually 4 holes in the flywheel, so how do I tell which hole to set no1 cylinder to without perhaps being 180 reg out as no1 cylinder will rise to tdc twice but it's the firing stroke hole needed! Thanks
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 5 жыл бұрын
G Day Gordon, The distributor drive is offset and will only go back in and engage in one position. If you turn your distributor up side down and look at the drive web you will see what I mean. As the distributor is driven from the camshaft it has to be correct.
@gogs244
@gogs244 5 жыл бұрын

G Day John, No compression test on this as yet. Some times I restore the parts and others I just fit new ones. Sparex supply a few for me and in that case I just replace them. Very satisfying re building them though.

Bundy Bears Shed thanks for replying Lance I recon it would be a very satisfying especially when you see a tractor in that condition and restore it back to new like you have done before, great job John

That may be a TE20 but its not a TED 20 as the D meant it was a Diesel . we had one in the early 60's bought second hand around the time that Massey Harris took them over and the brought out the 3 cylinder Perkins engined Massey Ferguson 35

G Day Tony, Yes they can be a bit of a fiddle. The Gold 35 always has a fluffy idle but knuckles in with a bit of load nicely. Never been able to fix that.

I went through and replaced the points and condenser on my '55 TED20 (following your video on it) and set the timing with a test light just like you did in the video, but the thing wouldn't start. It sounded like it was kicking back when it fired, as if the timing was way early, so I re-set everything to the witness marks as it was before i took it apart, and it fired right up! Thing is the way it's set up right now is about 1/8 of a turn counter clockwise on the distributor, which to me sounds WAY retarded, am I missing something here or is there something funny going on with my tractor? Many thanks for the videos, they're a great help and wonderful entertainment in their own right!

Someone at some stage may have the distributor drive gear off a tooth or so but the test light should allow for that but the flywheel timing mark will be out. On this video I miss spoke re retard and advance but I put a note in the description. In the end it is about getting it running correctly however you do it,
@pm270100
@pm270100 6 жыл бұрын
AAAAA when you open points you advance
@BundyBearsShed
@BundyBearsShed 6 жыл бұрын
But when you adjust points you should re set the timing or check it at least. Opening them can make it fire later.

Thanks for the vid, just a bit confused. When you said after we have the screwdriver in the Flywheel and the points set to just opening you said to retard the distributor one line, but on my ted20 turning the distributor clockwise would advance the timing. Nick.
