Ford designers did a nice job of upgrading what is basically the Mercury. It doesnt look like a Mercury with bells and whistles. They made it into a car of its own! A stand alone. I always loved the unique design of the taillights. They flow so nicely and smoothy from the fender. First time ive seen one up close like this so I'm really enjoying this video!

Wow Jay you nailed it with this one I’ve always loved these Lincoln’s and they were way ahead of their time , they were stylish with out being over the top they handled great and rode beautifully I’ve always considered them the American BMW 7 series of the 50’s . I had the chance to buy a 53 4 dr that a old timer had sitting in his carport he’d rebuilt everything from the ground up and I mean everything the only thing left to do was paint it and reinstall the new chrome that was in the trunk, he said he was sick and couldn’t drive it , he didn’t want his kid to get it so I could have it for $1500 but I was to slow getting back to him and he’d died . It’ll always be the one that got away from me. For the would you rather I’ll take the Packard and in the second option the 54 Lincoln and then I’ll have the 2 best looking cars from the 50’s and be a happy man 😊👍

Fun facts: 1) In the opening scene of" Highway Patrol" there's a '54 Lincoln Capri convertible rolling down the freeway. 2) In the movie The Long, Long Trailer, a Lincoln Capri was used (although a ’53 Convertible) as a partial “stand-in” for the 53 Mercury Monterey. Turns out the ’53 Merc with its 125hp flathead didn’t have enough power to pull the trailer up the steep mountain passes. The Capri had no problem with its 205HP Y-block. In a few brief scenes you can spot the difference. BTW I'll take the '54 Packard and Caddy.

Yes! I saw/heard that about the "Long, Long Trailer" and somewhere I have photos from it. The angles and distance the Lincoln was shot at make the differences less obvious to the general viewers, but it's there. I don't know if sound was added later, but loved the way they sounded.

Born in the late 50s and grew up during the 60s, I was a car guy even then. Any time we were in the market for a “new” (meaning used) car, I was right there with my dad scouting the classified ads. He never took my recommendations, which were heavy with Fords and he was not a Ford guy. But to me, this really does look like a dressed-up Mercury. I draw on the expertise of my kid mind, which may have loved Fords but that same kid hated Mercury’s. This car speaks to my anti-Mercury brain crease. I’ll take the Packard, even though by the time I came to know cars Packards had joined the dreaded “not made anymore” category and no kid could afford to be associated with a car not made anymore.

It’s an awfully pretty car, but I’m not sure it was “Lincoln-y” enough. And seriously, 94 grand is ‘37 Packard territory. Very nice, though. And holy cow, what a gorgeous engine. First round, has to be the Packard. That Caribbean is just drop dead gorgeous. Second round goes to the Studebaker. Not at all in the same class as the other two, but I’ve always loved the styling on that car.

54 Packard 54 Lincoln These early Lincolns were very stylish for their time. They just look good from any angle. While not as iconic as the suicide door Continental that followed, these Lincolns were beautiful automobiles. Like a Mercury but not really one. While watching and listening to the dealers film I was surprised at the amount of things they listed as options. You would think with Lincoln being the top of the Ford line those would be standard items and not options. Jay, this particular car that you are shooting today is absolutely gorgeous I love that blue color. Also, having never seen one of these in the wild it is nice to have a close-up video of this beauty. I'm sure the dealership mechanics were cursing the designers who put those hot exhaust pipes right there on the top of the engine. I'm willing to bet that caused quite a few burns on the arms of the mechanics.

15:57 What's with the 2nd set of sliders for the heating? Does this car have a separate heater under the front seat for the rear passengers? Cadillac and Buick had that feature in 1953-55. A high school friend's family had a '54 Lincoln sedan with a horn button in the rear. Having three boys in the family, someone was always honking the horn from the rear seat to give their parents a jolt. WYR: 1. Packard Caribbean 2. Cadillac

A great presentation of a truly classic car both inside and out. The taillights, which are very impressively designed, remind me quite a lot of the famous cathedral taillights that Packard introduced the following year. BTW. Did you know that a 1954 Lincoln Capri convertible is featured at the beginning of every Highway Patrol episode which debuted in 1955? Check it out on KZbin. I myself tend to look at the '52 and '53 Lincoln as a pair, and then the '54 and '55 Lincoln as a pair rather than a four year run with minor variations. They sure didn't sell very well however those Lincolns from the early to mid 50's. Usually, only around 40,000 for each year, which was far less than Cadillac or Chrysler both of which were up in the triple digits. I have always wondered why as they are very nice looking cars, especially the '53 model. Now, for WYR. As much as I like the Lincoln Capri I would have to take that rare and today quite valuable Packard Caribbean (only 400 made), but for the second selection I would definitely take the Lincoln. 😊

Imperial only offered a convertible in 1951, and from 1957 onwards. Lincoln abandoned the luxury car market from 1952 through 1955. They were competing with Oldsmobile, Buick, Desoto, Chrysler and, maybe, Clipper in this period. All new 54 styling with the identical sheet metal as 53. They did manage to make it look longer with protruding bumpers and full length body side moldings. A great and beautiful car, but not a true luxury car.

I like the road race Lincolns, though probably slightly prefer the 52-53 to the 54 (as well as the fanny lift for 55 even though that goes away from the original pure, almost stark, design. They say MCM design to me in a more contemporary way than the Cadillacs and Imperials. I've never found any info on where the knight motif came from, though they had used it since the early 40's. (57 brought the first 'Continental' inspired star, which would be simplified and then refined over the next 65 years). Attractive but without apparent (?) significance. Ford erred though a little bit in insisting that the 52s compete more against the 98 than the Cadillac 62/DeVille. They would recalibrate, but not completely -- until the 56 models (which were just stunning - even as sedans). WYR: 1) I'll have to go for the investment value - the Packard. And they are stunning, if a bit outmoded as Packard worked hard to wring the most horsepower ever out of a production flathead. 2) Fortunately I don't have to make the choice here, because the Caddy is not an Eldorado but a 62, so I feel no regret in picking the Lincoln!

Wasn't there a completely different Lincoln Capri later in 1950's? The "Capri" name was later recycled by Ford Europe on a sedan which had styling cues from the late-fifties T-bird. And, later on their Mustang knock-off which we eventually saw in the U.S. As for "NTT", you should've used "Hot Rod LIncoln" by Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen.

The theoretical speed listed is too low. My father owned a stock 1954 Lincoln Capri and I saw him reach 120 on the Garden State Parkway in the 1960s. I could see the speedometer from the back seat and he commented on the speed to my older cousin. It was a Saturday night and we were on our way to Wall Stadium.

WYR 1: All of them. WYR 2: All of them. Before someone can complain about "Park" not being on that car, they should try pushing a car that's stuck IN "Park." Not fun. If there's no "Park" to be stuck in, no problem.

I had a 55 Dodge Royal Lancer and a 55 Imperial in the 70s (I was a weird teenager, lol) and they were the same- the Powerflites had no "park". They did have a prominent handle for the parking brake-which was a tailshaft/driveshaft drum brake. Most people knew how to drive manuals and likely learned on them, so it wasn't the same issue as now, using a handbrake was SOP. However, the other issue was leaving them in gear (as you could do with a manual) without the handbrake didn't work.

Beautiful color. But, the whole Ford line was too much alike. These are just dressed up Mercury's, which are dressed up Ford's. You see these Ford products a lot in period films. Ford was very aggressively pushing their products and this was hurting the Independents. Never liked Lincoln dashboards. Plain and uninspired. Druthers: Packard Caribbean, and Studebaker Starliner.

Lincoln couldn’t shake that it was a Mercury. Styling was not cutting edge for what it wanted to be. They were also a bit mechanically problematic. I’ll take the Cadillac.

I don’t know how I missed this video - better late … I wasn’t a Ford guy in the 50’s because of their crappy Y-blocks, but I must confess that the ‘53-‘54 Mercurys (this Capri was a gussied-up Mercury) were among the most attractive cars manufactured during those years. Surprising, actually, as the Fords for ‘53 and ‘54 were ugly as hell, IMO. WYR: 1- Lincoln 2- Cadillac !! * * My 1954 Car of the Year

Hahaha I want to cover a Chrysler airflow so bad it’s one of my favorite cars of all time it’s really a car that I really want to drive so it’s like I kind of sort of wanna find somebody that owns one.. but there is footage of them rolling one of those cars getting in it and driving away I’ll totally show the footage when we do that vehicle.. likewise when doing a Ford Pinto I will definitely show coverage of them blowing up

This era Lincoln was pretty but seemed a little lost and uninspired. Seems more like a competitor for an Oldsmobile let alone a Cadillac. Lincoln/Continental finally made a gorgeous car worthy of the name with the 56/57 Mark II and the 61-68 Continentals. I would have absolutely picked the Packard Caribbean or Eldo over the Lincoln

Oh dear. in the 1st WYR I have to pick "none of the above", a first for me on this channel. The 2nd goes to the Caddy- I've always loved that look. This Capri just doesn't look right to me with the "Dagmars" both front and rear- especially the rear. I also like neither the "Knight" motif anywhere or the abbreviated gravel guards on the rear fenders which looks over-done. The exhaust cross-over on the engine is an abysmal design, but follows the "Y" block overall in that regard. Lincoln needed the "Continental" and didn't yet have it to compete with Caddilac and this is just a refined Mercury to me with little to recommend it. Gotta love Ed Sullivan offering a "personal invitation" to every TV viewer nationwide; mot much 'personal' about that! Not a bad car for it's time, just not a car I can find much to like about beyond the cool-looking taillights.
