This was before my time but I loved that, for many years after this, the Browns wore the all-white unis at home. They always looked bigger than the other team and the white, combined with the orange helmet, popped against the gray Northeast Ohio skies...

Ironic how the NFL's two best teams from the decade prior to the Super Bowl era are the only two NFL teams that still have never appeared in a Super Bowl other than the Jacksonville Jaguars(est.1995) and Houston Texans(est. 2002). The Cleveland Browns and Detroit Lions each won 3 NFL Championships during the 1950's and the Browns also won it in 1964 but neither team has won it since. The Lions have won one playoff game(1991)since winning the 1957 NFL Championship Game against the Browns

Rules have changed over the years. For instance. In those times a missed FG, that went out of bounds or out of the End Zone, was a touchback.

Wasn't it great when NFL head coaches wore suits instead of the athletic logo wear they use today. Bill Belichik would have worn a suit if he coached back then. It commands respect.

Tom Landry of the Cowboys, and his disciples, Dan Reeves of the Denver Broncos, and Mike Ditka of the Chicago Bears were some of the last holdouts for wearing full suits before the NFL mandated coaches wearing team attire. Ditka would often continue to wear a Bears sweater over a dress shirt and tie, but the NFL would soon start using coaches and sideline staff to model NFL based clothing including polo shirts, sweaters windbreakers, winter jackets, and leather "bomber" style and "letterman" style jackets. Look at NFL games in the late 80s. An NFL stadium crowd shot from 1987 had a very small percentage of fans with team related gear outside a team baseball cap. Jerseys were for kids.A similar shot in 1989 showed an explosion of Starter Jackets and team jerseys among adultmen in the stands. This took off even more in the early 90s when owners of very popular teams such as Dallas, the Raiders, Forty Niners, Bears,Giants, Redskins, Eagles, Steelers, got the NFL to allow teams to pocket money made off the sale of their own team themed clothing instead of spliting up the profits equally.

Respect different opinions but I always thought suits seemed out of their element for sports. A friend of mine was a long-time college basketball coach who always complained that he sweated through a lot of top-line clothing before it became okay to wear a polo.

The Steelers never even made the playoffs during the first 40 years of their existence dating back to 1933. I think the Immaculate Reception Game against the Raiders in 1972 was the Steelers first ever playoff game in their entire history

@@lucycollins4835, yep, as you probably know, from 1952 thru 1959, and from 1961 to '67 the EASTERN AND WESTERN CONFERENCES(IN 1951- THE SAME 1952 THRU '59 EASTERN AND WESTERN CONFS. SCHEDS PREVAILED AS IN '51- IT WAS THE AMERICAN AND NATIONAL CONFS.) would play their conf. opponents twice(1 home and 1 road) for 10 games(vs. other 5 conf. teams) from 1952-59, and 12 games(vs other 6 conf. teams) from '61 to 1967, and play out of conference only twice, one home and one road, once each vs two teams on a cycling basis, meaning that once out of every four years the inter-conference would feature the same teams playing each other, with home and road alternating. In 1950 and in 1960, two teams, the first in '50 the soon to be defunct first edition of the BALTIMORE COLTS resplendent in green and silver and one season only NFL participants after three seasons in the ALL-AMERICA FOOTBALL CONF(AAFC), and in '60 the expansion DALLAS COWBOYS, played only one game vs. each team in the NFL. For the latter, the COWBOYS were placed in the NFL WEST but only played WESTERN CONF. teams once giving each WESTERN TEAM 11 CONF. GAMES, VS ONLY ONE GAME VS THE EAST. THE EAST TEAMS PLAYED 10 conf. games vs 2(one each vs. DAL.) in '60. IN 1950, THE COLTS EDITION #1 GROUP were placed in the NATIONAL CONF. meaning that conf. made up of their former AAFC mates the S.FRANCISCO 49'ERS AND already established WESTERN BASED NFL TEAMS plus the NY YANKS (the former BOSTON YANKS, just YANKS[N.Y. CITY], and NY BULLDOGS franchise that would become the DALLAS TEXANS OF THE NFL IN 1952 before folding and having most of their contracts moving to the new second edition blue and white BALTY COLTS in 1953). After 1951 THE NATIONAL AND AMERICAN CONFERENCES BECAME THE WESTERN AND EASTERN CONFERENCES. BALTY IN '50 played each NFL TEAM ONCE= MEANING NATIONAL CONF. TEAMS played 11 conf. games and one interconf. game while AMERICAN CONF. GAMES played 10 conf. gms and 2 vs NATIONAL CONF. TEAMS. After BALTY EDITION #1 FOLDED, the formula stayed the same until that '60 season. In 1961, the NEW MINNESOTA VIKINGS played 12 WESTERN CONF. games(OTHER 6 TEAMS= ONCE ON THE ROAD, AND ONCE AT HOME) AND 2 VS. EASTERN CONF. TEAMS, WITH ONE VS. DALLAS(COWBOYS MOVED TO THE EAST CONF. IN '61) IN THE FIRST TWO SEASONS OF 1961 and '62, alternating home and road. THUS, DETROIT AND CLEVE BOTH NOT IN THE SAME CONFERENCE, PLAYED TWO REGULAR SEASON GAMES(1953, and '57,) AND ANOTHER FOUR TIMES(1952, 53, 54, AND '57 IN THE NFL TITLEGAME)= 6 MEETINGS.

Speaking of two 0-16 teams hypothetically playing one another- In 1991, I saw in person the 1-14-0 INDY COLTS play the 2-13-0 TAMPA BAY BUCS from the old "Sombrero" TAMPA STADIUM, twas a XMAS GIFT from my Wife. My daughter and I went because my spouse, a nurse, had to work that Sunday. It was the REPUS BOWL= SUPER spelled backward.. The loser got the first pick in the draft. Well, actually, no, that wasn't even on the line because the BUCS had traded away their pick to.. INDY meaning THE COLTS GOT BOTH THE FIRST AND SECOND PICKS IN THE DRAFT. I wasn't a fan of either squad. It was future jailbird addicted gambler and forger ART SCHLICHTER at qback FOR INDY VS. VINNY TESTAVERDE at QB FOR TBAY. By far, it was the worst football game I've ever seen. Deadly dull..is putting it mildly. The final was 17-3, TBAY. James Wilder, a runningback saved the day but cost the number one draftpick for TBAY. INDY used the number one pick to get STEVE EMTMAN from U. OF WASHINGTON A defensive tackle converted in the pros to d-end, and the number two pick to land middle linebacker, eventually converted in the pros to outside backer, QUENTIN CORYATT from TEX. A&M. EMTMAN was barely decent, while CORYATT the first NFL'ER BORN IN ST. CROIX in the CARIBBEAN, had the same career. Both players played no more than 7 or 8 seasons, EMTMAN only played 5 or 6 campaigns. Injuries after both players outstanding rookie seasons, shortened their careers. The 1992 DRAFT was the first one after COLLEGE JUNIORS became eligible for it, thanks to a court ruling. EMTMAN actually left school before playing his senior year. The one thing I remember most: THE INCESSANT COMING AND GOING OF PEOPLE in the walkway and row ahead of our 40 ydline seats. BACK AND FORTH AD NAUSEUM, NON-STOP. I don't know if they were going to the concession stand or the bathroom, but it was difficult to see the game most of the time. My daughter who was 7 at the time, fell asleep, lol. AWFUL..
